The early buzz that’s been reported is if Alex Rodriguez opts out of his contract, that agent Scott Boras will be looking at $30 million a year for 10 years.
It’s tempting, but I’d rather save the money for Santana. I still (maybe stupidly,) think that this team can win the NL next year and that the end of this year was nothing more than a fluke.

I think AROD is worth all the money for 5 years…for 10 years you would be nuts to put up the money. I say seven years 210mil and we are throwing away some money at that point. Keep in mind he would break the alltime HR record in a METS uni
Mark
No forget A-rod would you guys pony up the $$ for Mariano if he doesn’t resign with the Yankees? I don’t think the Mets would do it with Wagner getting the 10M he’s getting. Well if the Mets don’t I can fantasize about Mariano in a Red Sox uniform. What a slap that would be for Yankee fans. Gotta love the thought.
I would pony-up in a minute. Your getting the best player in baseball and he isn’t costing you a thing in players. He can carry a team for months at a time and if you look at his playoff numbers you have to look at those around him as well no protection.
Camilo
I would steer clear. For 10 years $300 MM you have to show up when it really counts (post season), and he has not done it throughout his career. It’s not like he is asked to carry a team like an Albert Pujols, he plays on the highest paid team full of all stars.
Benwa
We already have enough moody prima donas. Dont need anybody moping around because they did not get invited for a sleepover at the home of teh worst fielding SS in the American league
Wesley Dumont
Yes. And see if you can get Torre to boot.
SNY would go through the roof, season ticket sales, new stadium crowds, all this and the fact that he’s worth every penny, despite post season probs.
Houston Mets Fan
Imagine a lineup with AROD in it…and the crying from all the Yankees fans who would say “we let him go cause he couldnt get it done in the playoffs”

No, I would not for ARod, but I would for Posada or Mariano
Houston Mets Fan
not Posada…too old for a catcher. Mariano for 2 years 25mil…he and Wagner together would make quite a combo…and they could share a song.

Omar will go after arod if he hits the open market. Fact is he’s the best player in baseball and produces consistent #’s year after year. I break the bank in a heartbeat for a-rod, you move wright over to second and have arod at third. Wright made it clear early in the season that he would LOVE the mets to get arod saying he wouldnt care moving positions if thats what it would take. Let’s keep in mind that Utley was originally a 3B and made the move to second for someone called david bell lol

Nope. I´d rather spend $20 million after next season on Santana, Peavey, or Sabathia, plus $10 mil plus for a new first baseman. If all the money is tied up in ARod, we either don´t have money for pitching or we just become the Yankees…
Houston Mets Fan
I think it would be a mistake not to at lease give the young pitchers we have a shot to make it. A line up with AROD or Adum Dunn would be an upgrade…and a pitching staff with some younger arms would be a plus
Seaver
I would be surprised if anyone gave him 300M for 10 yrs. I would go after A-Rod, within reasonable parameters. Just because Boras wants 300 doesn’t mean he’s going to get it. And signing anyone for 10 years at the age of 32 is a dangerous proposition.
Paul
The $30 million a year pricetag doesn’t scare me on A-Rod, but there’s no one that I’d be willing to sign to a 10 year contract.
Five years at $150 million, I’d take A-Rod in a heartbeat. Six years at $180 million, I’d do. I’m not willing to go for more than six years for a 32-year-old.
TomG
No to A-rod, spend the money on pitching. pitching wins games. I would go after Posada and Mariano Rivera.
Pete
Take Mariano and Posada instead!
Taylor
I’d love to have A-Rod but that’s way too much to pay. $30million/yr? No way. That’s just too much. All the people who somehow think having Alex Rodriguez on the team would hurt the team or the morale are crazy. He’s the best player in the world right now. He would help us win many more games. But with $30 million / year you can get 2 superstars.
Jumanji
anyone who would give this guy that money is an idiot. he’ll never get the one thing that money can’t buy – and that’s a world series ring.
how can you really address your team’s needs when you’re paying him that kind of scratch?
and by the way.. go look at the playoff records of seattle and the yankmees when lame-rod was on the team. ain’t so good people.
he’s a sideshow.. and a rather expensive one at that. pay the world’s best shrink 1/100,000 of that money and get jose reyes’ head right. and buy some pitching.
yours truly,

A Rod puts up great #’s. Is he juiced? I wonder.
His play is David Newhan like ( sorry couldn’t resist ) in the post season. Also hate his agent.
I hate his agent. If you were to spend that kind of money I would rather get 2 #1 pitchers for the $$ he commands and win the WS.
We have the offense ( or can get it ). Pitching is hard to find.
JB
I have mixed emotions. On the one hand, I think we have to at least make an offer. To ignore a guy that was is the best player in baseball and a shoo-in for the Hall would be foolish.
On the other hand, he might have just peaked. It would be quite the story if someone gives him his $300M and then he has a Delgado-esque year, huh?
And I do wonder about the juicing possibility.
I know he doesn’t fit the profile but new stuff gets invented all the time and testing still doesn’t catch everything. It would be just the Mets luck to have something come out about him after signing him for big bucks.

Earlier somebody said you could pick up 2 #1 pitchers for $30 million…. That doesn’t sound right. In today’s market, you couldn’t even get a solid No. 2 starter for $15.
One of the big problems we had this year was the lack of a bonafide cleanup hitter. (Delgado just isn’t that kind of hitter anymore.) Needless to say, A-Rod would fill that spot nicely. Can you imagine the power numbers a lineup like this (Jose, Beltran, Wright, A-Rod, Alou, Delgado, Castro/LoDuca, Milledge/Gomez) would put up? And you’ve still got 4 guys who can steal 20-30 bases a year.
Chris in Japan
Whoops! I meant solid No. 2 starter for $15 MILLION.

Some second thoughts—With Delgado, Alou, and Duque coming off the books in 2009 (and Pedro if they don´t re-sign him, which I think they will), signing ARod wouldn´t preclude them pursuing Santana, Sabathia, or Peavey as FAs. Add to that the new stadium revenues, the SNY money, the $20 million per year from CitiBank for naming rights and you´re talking serious revenue increases. We also could have a lot of guys coming into the lineup at minimum salaries in the next few years (Milledge, Gomez, FMart, Carp, Humber, Mulvey).
Dave in Spain
When Boras talks about $30 million per year, Im sure he wants an average annual value of that much. But if the contract increases so that by year 5 he´s making 30 mill, than maybe that´d be enough.
And I wouldn´t go beyond 8 years, unless it was with team options.
