Just curious …

October
4

I grew up in Cleveland, so I’m watching the Indians. They just happen to be playing the Yankees. Was wondering who is watching the games tonight. Can’t imagine many of you are hosting Yankees viewing parties.

The Phillies sure are distinguishing themselves so far. The Rockies are everybody’s darlings. I’d have no problem of them running the table.

I loved watching the Rockies absolutely MASH on the Phools. Where is Ron Hall now? haha, probably buying bullets for his .38. This just reaffirms the fact, that we as Mets fans already knew. The Phillies don’t belong in the playoffs! They didn’t win the East, they didn’t take the East, we GAVE them the East. And know they are realizing their full potential, which is definately not a playoff contender. It upsets me that if we win just TWO of the games where we had a 6+ run lead in the 5th, we would be in the playoffs, but at the same time, it is comforting to shut up the Phoohly fans. Rollins was wrong, the East wasn’t theirs, it was ours, and we gave them a very early Christmas gift. But it will be short lived, so I hope they enjoy their short stint in the playoffs. It ends a mile above sea level.

And who’s bright idea was it to play highlights of the Mets collapse before the start of the first game yeserday at Citizens Bank? Didn’t they realize that just showed everyone how they DIDN’T earn the East… KARMA, it’s a beautiful thang, a beautiful thang…

    Lebron is a FOOL!
He shows up to the game tonight wearing…a YANKEE HAT!

    Where’s his PR director.

    Amazing

    john,

I am watching and really enjoying this so far. I hope mr. hall is enjoying it too.
    hahahahahahahahahahahahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

The Dbacks looked strong last night. Webb is awesome. Ron Darling is calling the games, and sounds good. He did his homework and knows the team well.

I listened to the top of the first inning in my car on the way home from work, after the Rockies-Phillies game was over. But once I got home, it’s Rangers all the way.

    Tony:
    That’s rough. :’(

With the start of NHL just reminds me why baseball is the best. The NBA and NHL are bad jokes. 16 teams make their
playoffs. The National Felons League and NASCRAP are almost as bad as 12. Baseball has 8 which is about the limit as it can be.

  8. Jack Delcos

Phillies suck. Sure we did collapse and totally embarrass ourselves. But an early exit out of the NLDS? Pathethic. Against the Rockies and their nasty pitching staf. Jeff Francis and who else? Ubaldo Jimines? Some dude named Morales? Sad. Just sad. What’s even more sad, is that I’m not watching the Mets in the playoffs. It’s going to be a long, long winter. But I’m done with baseball for a while. Metsies hurt me this time. And in 2006 NLCS. And in chase for 2005 Wild Card. And in 2000 World Series. And in 1999 NLCS (I hate you Kenny Rogers). And in 1998 chase for the Wild Card. Mets fans only know disappointment. Sad.

I knew it was only a matter of time until the evil twin showed up…

I subscribe to the notion that it is my duty to root against the Yankees and root against the Braves and if the Yankees are playing the Braves, to root for an earthquake.

But the Phillies are definitely third in line for hatin’ on.

I’m just frustrated by how little I actually know about the Indians in watching this game.

  11. LoveEmHateEm

John, does the MVP voting conclude a tthe regular seasons’ end? If not, when is the deadline for voting to be in?

    Also: Go Indians!

And how ‘bout dem Hot Rocks up 2-0 goin to Colo. on Saturday! BTW Kaz the ex-Met hammers what will probably prove to be the final nail in the Phils 2007 coffin with a Grand Salami!
    Can you say schadenfreude?

And this just in from the “if ‘Newsday’ was ‘Variety’” desk:
EX-METS’ VETS GET TO KILL PHILS THRILLS

  12. LoveEmHateEm

(the ex-Mets being Hurdle, Matsui, and Apodaca. Anybody know if there’s any other x-Mets on the Rock Squad?)

  13. DC

Jorge Julio was…until he got left off the playoff roster.

  14. LoveEmHateEm

Tribe up on the Skanks 7-3. What is this deja vu? Some guy named Lofton his killing out there tonite! Haha, from Tokyo commercials to potential ALDC MVP … I love it!!!—especially against the Skank-o-roos!

  15. ed

Braves, Phillies and Yanks in that order for me. great to see the Phillies looking awful today. Now the yanks are getting crushed I’m feeling a little better….

    John,

any scoop on the coaches yet. Hojo back to first, guy from tex as hitting coach, whos on third and is Manuel coming back. how about who they plan to try and keep. i like to see Lo Duca, Castillo, Anderson and Alou back…..

  16. tomg

Fellow Met fans, things are looking better and better each day. Phils down 2-0 in games and the Yankees are getting smoked 9-3.

  17. Dan Gurney

Rooting for your least favorite teams to lose is not what I thought my October would be like just three weeks ago. Oh the pain! The pain!

  18. ed

10-3 I Might get a good nights sleep…. I will admit i root for Arod, I want the team to lose but have him go 4-4. yankees fans were such fools over him, first ballet HOF.

  19. ed

I’ve already started my hot stove stuff just to forget

  20. Art Vandelay

FU ed! arod can suck a fat fone JK! but seriously I hate arod. and it used to be braves, yankees, phillies for me as far as hating but now its Phillies, Yankees, Braves, Cardinals, Marlins, and idk

  21. Mike C.

I am a huge fan of the idea of… the Yankees getting obliterated without it being A-Rod’s fault in any way.

  22. ed

I’d like to see Oberkfell get a shot at 3rd

  23. matt

    i’d like to see a rockies/indians world series…
also, is it true that jeff wilpon is thinking of bringing glavine back. what the hell?

  24. Ray Sadecki

    John,

How long have you been a Met fan? It sounds you have been a fellow sufferer for a long time, but your bio says you have only been covering the Mets for the last 2 years, and you are from Cleveland. Also youve spent a long time covering Orioles, And I think one year with skanks

What are your favorite teams in order of most liked on down.

  25. Spiderpig

Who was that Japanese second baseman flying around the bases for the Rockies? I’m so happy for him, doubly so because they are in the process of, dare I say it, sweeping the Philthies.

John, I have been watching the games as much as possible, but have to only peek in during commercials of prime time network viewing.

  26. Spiderpig

tomg and others – no way Rockies even make it to the World Series with their starting pitching. They’re not gonna be playing on the road in Philly next series. Maybe their offense can hold up, but Diamondbacks and Cubs look so much better. Then again, D’backs aren’t all-so-great in their starting either, but have a filthy-good bullpen.

  27. John Delcos

First of all, I have no idea who this “Jack Delcos” is.

I covered the Browns and Indians shortly after college when I was still close to being a fan.

Actually, I covered the Yankees from 1998-2005. Before that the Orioles. This is the first year since 1996 that the team I covered didn’t make the playoffs. I blame the Mets pen for that.

Each team I covered came at a different phase in my life which made it the best time, but also at times the worst.

I must say, however, covering the Mets is a lot of fun and in a lot of ways more enjoyable than the Yankees.-JD

  28. John Delcos

In answer to the question about postseason awards, the ballot is due after the regular season and before the first playoff game.

This year I voted for NL Cy Young.-JD

  29. tomg

    spiderpig,

Sometimes it isn’t what you have or don’t have it’s karma and the Rockies have had that for a few weeks now, actually ever since the second half of the baseball season. Rockies are going to the world series. I’m going to sleep real well tonight, Phils down 2-0, yankees get hammered and the Rangers came back to win there opening night game 5-2.

  30. Spiderpig

tomg – Right on with that assessment of sleeping well. Just put the same thing down for my facebook status – life is good!

  31. Dan Gurney

The Rockies have the best team ERA in the second half of the season.

  32. Dan Gurney

One more reason to root for the Rockies. They voted a full playoff share to the family of the late Scott Coolbaugh.

  33. stick

a random rant, looking for a thread to post in…

Omar catches a lot of flak for getting (or staying with) the “old” guys this year.

But, as others hve noted, what were the options? The farm wasn’t loaded with ML ready (or valuable to trade) options, other than DW and JR who were already up, and were the guys to build around.

Omar was looking to build a winner quickly (which he did), while at the same time not saddling the team with albatross contracts or trading away anyone fainltly passing as a prospect (which he did not, a few BP arms not withstanding).

So, the option was try and milk a little more out of some older guys (Glavine, Duque, Alou, etc.). DId it work 100%? Nope, but overall they were pretty successful with it, until the pitching couldn’t quite hold up.

It is easy to say “get younger”, but where exactly are the young guys coming from? Mostly, they are going to come from within, and that takes time.

2 years from now, they should be much younger overall. Most of the old farts will be gone, or in reserve roles where they belong.

Right or Wrong, I think Omar’s feelings were that if he needed a stop gap ast a position, might as well get a guy with talent at the end of his career and hope they stay on the fiel (Alou, El Duque) instead of a journeyman that is sure to stuck (Newhan? You want him

  34. John Delcos

To Dan: I saw that about Coolbaugh. You’re right. The Rockies are the classy team to pull for.-JD

  35. LoveEmHateEm

The detailed article about Coolbaugh in SI was really touching esp the part where he took his two sons to the beach on his last day. I root for the NL in the PS anyway and if the Rocks make it to the WS, this would make it that much sweeter.

JD: Thanks for the response about the post season awards deadline. So this would indicate that everyone in Philly has wasted about as much energy screaming “MVP” for JRoll as the energy they’ve expended waving ‘the towels’ in hopes for a Phils victory at home.

  36. steve

It was very very pleasurable watching the Yankees get smoked last night, but I have a feeling that the series is going 5 games anyway. I also have to admit that I am very happy for Kaz Matsui and am looking forward to watching tomorrow night as the Phillies get swept away out of the NLDS.

Who was your Cy Young vote—Mota?
