Mets Chat Room

mets-logo.jpg Welcome back to Mets Chat Room.

We’re a few minutes from first pitch and there are a hundred thoughts swirling through my head. The most prevailing is the odds of seeing the Mets after Sunday aren’t good.

Does anybody expect Washington to beat the Phillies? Probably not, but does it really matter?

It doesn’t because it is hard to envision the Mets taking care of business these next two days after these last two weeks. This is a team that looks beaten and overwhelmed.

Let’s get rid of the notion that this team quit, because it didn’t. It played careless baseball, and as the losing continued, it played frustrated and looked listless.

Talk with you throughout the day. I know you won’t be shy.

Big crowd? I’m listening on WFAN.

  2. dr

jd they played lifeless baseball. they took on the persona of their manager. lifeless in the dugout & ifeless with the media… lets at least go down fighting.. win these last 2!

  3. dr

lot of empty seats right now but thats normal.. late arriving crowd i hope

  4. Craigelmer

WHY WHY WHY doesnt Reyes bunt more. I bet he beats out 5 of 10 for a 500 batting average. Instead his average drops.

  5. John Delcos

A lot of empty seats. ... Wright singles. Runners on the corners. That’s a 16-game hitting streak for Wright.-JD

  6. Craigelmer

This game is sold out over 5500 fans just late to arrive. Lets hope Beltran doesnt strike out with a runner on 3rd and 1 out.

  7. John Delcos

Craigelmer: I can see Reyes getting a bunt hit maybe once every week or so. Maybe once every 10 games. It is a weapon he does not take advantage of.-JD

  8. todd

i’m a regular reader of the blog and while there’s good info on lineups and other developments, the sky is always falling. this isn’t the print version, you don’t need to sell papers here. from the overreactions to lastings milledge in the spring to calling the season over two games early, this hasn’t exactly been a port in the storm for mets fans this year. the mets just made it 2-0 and adam eaton is going later this afternoon for the phillies; the season isn’t over. lets hope, when it is, you’ve got a chance to reflect and maybe take a different approach to your blog next season and NOT needle mets fans whenever the opportunity arises. i know you are professionally interested in the team and as such have no emotional connection whatever, but take it easy on the rest of us, would you?

  9. John Delcos

One thing I would like to see changed for next year is getting rid of celeb screamers Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and Kevin James. ... Really annoying.-JD

  10. D.J. Short

Thank you, John. I can’t stand those celeb Let’s Go Mets chants.

  11. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

John: I know this is not game related but I am sure Jerry Manuel stated earlier this year that if he did not get a ML managers job next year that he would be coaching college baseball next year. Is this true or am I mistaken.

  12. John Delcos

To Todd: My job is to report it as I see it, and my perceptions for the most part have been right on. The flaws I pointed out surfaced and several weeks ago when they lead by seven I said they hadn’t won anything.

I’m not here to be your ``port in the storm.’’ I don’t look at this team through orange-and-blue glasses. You want peaches and cream, you’re in the wrong place. You want to find out about what’s happening with your team, stay with us.

There will be tweaking with this blog next year and your input, and that of everybody else, is welcome. But don’t count on me being a homer and cheerleader. It won’t happen.-JD

  13. John Delcos

Oh Todd, one more thing. If you’re a Mets’ fan, didn’t the sky fall these past two weeks?-JD

  14. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

D.J. Short: Do you read this site also ? I thought you would be too busy.

  15. D.J. Short

Absolutely, I do. I’m sitting here listening to the game because I’m blacked out.

  16. Doug

I can’t help but feel as though this is too little too late.

  17. D.J. Short

A Phillies loss changes everything. Keep the faith. Cy Young, Adam Eaton is not.

  18. Craigelmer

To all those in Florida with the regional sports package the game is on FSFL 634.

  19. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    OK! Great 2 innings.
Lets hope Maine can keep plowing through the order 1-2-3.

Where was this fire last night??

  20. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

D.J. Short: Sorry to hear your blacked out. I wish I could help.

  21. John Delcos

    Thanks D.J. for reading.-JD

  22. Rasputin

The sky HAS been falling for the last two weeks.

From here in southern Jersey, deep in Phillies territory, it looks like too little too late for our Mets. They’re turning back into the Mutts.

  23. John Delcos

To D.J.: Your blog and mine have to join forces to end this black out nonsense. It’s crazy to have it this way.-JD

  24. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

I want a win so bad as do all of you so how crazy would it be well you know so I will not say it.

  25. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

The blackout rules are so archaic. It’s absurd.

  26. D.J. Short

Especially in the last week of the season. Craziness.

  27. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

John: Would you compare Milledge to Shannon Stewart.

  28. John Delcos

Boys and Girls: If I knew the answer to why they couldn’t do this earlier, I’d be in a different line of work. The smart ass in me asks, is this enough?-JD

  29. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    Adam Eaton better fall apart.
Go Matt Chico and the Nationals.

  30. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

    Take him out right now.

  31. dr

    bench reyes

  32. Craigelmer

Pull Reyes NOW!!!!!! for not running that one out.

  33. JK

I don’t know why, but I have this sense that some of the problems the Mets pitchers have been having lately have to do with LoDuca’s game calling. Maybe under the pennant race pressure, he’s not thinking clearly and is making bad calls? Castro called Ollie’s last gem in Florida, and yesterday Ollie just couldn’t get anything going with LoDuca. Today Maine has been doing great with Castro. Maybe LoDuca is too emotional and it gets in the way of his game calling. Just a wild theory but I can’t shake it.

I know LoDuca cares and is one of the few fiery personalities in the clubhouse, but I don’t know if “fiery” is what they need. Players can be intense without being fiery and I think it’s intensity that they need more than emotional explosions.

  34. Doug

Where is Jose’s head…...He is playing like it is already over.

  35. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    Reyes has fallen apart.
    No hustle, no drive.

Not running out the foul ball is just another sign he thinks he can’t do it.

  36. dr

i was joking u need reyes defense but do something dock him pay fine him make him do 10,000 push ups..

  37. TomG

First thing the mets need to do is fire Henderson. I know that sounds crazy but ever since henderson has been the first base coach and reye’s tutor reyes has played terrible.

  38. Jimmy the Saint

We all just have to hope that Adam Eaton is his normal self. He’s horrid. We could also hope the Nats bring boat paddles up to bat. ;-)

  39. ed

nah …. Ahern at this point could provide as much as Reyes… great fielder and neither has a bat right now

  40. John Delcos

What in the hell is Reyes thinking? Oh, I forgot, he’s not thinking. Fifteen feet from the box he stopped and watched the ball. Here’s what I really don’t get, why did he stop to watch in the first place? He’s lucky it’s 8-0. But, he’s done stuff like this all year. He will never be a great player until he gets his head straight. That is unbelievably bad. ... It’s unfair to boil a season down to one play, but what if Reyes bothered to cover second Tuesday night vs. Washington? One more win could mean making the playoffs and not making it.-JD

  41. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

I know we really want to cheer all of our players all the time, but anyone at Shea who wants to boo Reyes today has all the right in the world.

  42. D.J. Short

I don’t know, I mean, if you look at the reactions in the Mets dugout last night, you see David Wright, a guy who obviously wants to win—the guy wears the heart on his sleeve out there. He may make a mistake or two out there, but you know his heart is in the game. The thing about Reyes is that I’m not sure his heart or his head are in the game.

  43. ed

JD- whats the scoop on Reyes I hear his head is too big getting very cocky any truth or just piling on a struggling young player…...

  44. TomG

    JK,

I agree, there have been many times this year I scratched my head with certain pitches Lo’duca called on certain pitch counts and also the locations. I think the Mets have had enough of Lo’duca anyway so i would be surprised if they resigned him anyway since he is a free agent at the end of the year.

  45. John Delcos

Trying to put together the dots, Reyes was pulled in Houston for the same thing just before the All-Star break. Then during the break they hired Henderson. The Henderson experiment did not work. He needs to go. And, Reyes needs an overhaul.-JD

  46. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

Reyes is not in the game. His slump has taken his head out of the game. His energy, smile, character…it’s all gone.

He needs that to play the way we know he can.

  47. ed

DJ – i think this is wright’s team he’s just not been around long enough to carry a team, two years from now he could will this team to win four games, now he just presses makes errors and grounds into double plays

  48. John Delcos

I’ve poked around on Reyes looking for emotional problems at home, off-the-field issues (we all know what that means), to Reyes taking it easy because of the contract. Everybody says he’s young and give him the benefit of doubt, that you can’t expect the same rate of progress from year to year. Maybe so, but he he were to run out the DAMN ball and do it all the time half his problems would be over.-JD

  49. dr

you guys are convincing me that loduca needs to go.. as for reyes keep him in the game today but i hope the fans give him an earful for his next at bat. henderson cant help much i agree he cant be back. ps: kiner is so old

  50. ed

TomG- My problem with letting paulie go is who do you get, Castro is damaged goods and cant be a starter hell never make it through a full year. the best farm hand is now with the Nats ( Flores) not very many options in FA or trade. Pena isnt ready yet…..

  51. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

I wish everyone had SNY today. Ralph has been great.

  52. Mark

Before the Reyes thing, I was thinking this was what we had been waiting for- 2 out hits, pitchers getting bunts down, Milledge playing. All good things. Seriously, Philly aside, just win the last two games and show me the effort. Hopefully, we’ll get some help from Washington or Milwaukee and push this thing to Monday, but seriously, just win and it may placate me some.

  53. Sam G. - Portland, Or

I think what the organization needs to do is float Reyes’ name out there in the winter as “available”. Not do a deal with him, but make him see he’s not untouchable. With the size of his contract I don’t know if it would be believeable. They need to do something to get into his head to show him he’s not above the team.

And yes… by all means Henderson needs to go. It could be all coincidental and circumstantial, but, since he arrived Reyes has gone so far south he can’t even find midline.

  54. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    6 in a row for Maine…

  55. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    7.

  56. ed

I think reyes could be had in the off season for a top of the rotation starter = santana for reyes

  57. ed

Gomez could be a tablesetter, Ahern could be a rey ordonez type replacement all glove no bat hitting eighth

  58. Benny Ayala

Do you really expect anyone to readily acknowledge off-the-field problems, if they do in fact exist? My guess is that they’d have lots of black coffee and hope for the best, no?

As for Rickey, he wasn’t brought in to tutor Reyes—it was to tutor Milledge. On that count, he think he’s earned his paycheck. Don’t confuse Reyes’ regression with Rickey’s presence.

Finally, no port in the storm for those in the basement in their blue and orange underwear? These metaphors are getting too much for me follow. Thank heavens it will all be over in 24 hours.

  59. ed

and before im killed – i said i could see it not i wish it happen or support it

  60. Joan in Cheshire

John – Just got back from some errands – is it really 8-0? and can the Mets hold that lead?? Seriously, this is great for the guys – I guess they saw the cliff up close.

  61. dr

timeout…. REYES WILL NOT NOR SHOULD NOT BE TRADED

  62. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    Saved yourself there Ed.
I was about to write a lengthy post right there.

  63. JK

JD: I can understand that you can’t expect the same rate of progress every year, but Reyes has regressed. Further, it’s not just his slump that’s troublesome, it’s his demeanor and personality that’s changed as well.

Regardless, he’s young and anyone advocating trading him is just plain insane.

ed: Depending on the medical report on his arthritic back, I would sign Castro and bring him back plus look for another catcher who he can share time with. They don’t need a full-time catcher who will make all the starts. I’m seriously staring to wonder about Paulie’s handling of the pitchers down the stretch.

  64. John Delcos

To Benny: Not on the record I don’t expect them to acknowledge off-the-field problems. Off-the-record, it can happen. ... Hard not to connect Reyes with Rickey. ... Next season I will have a metaphor handbook-JD

  65. Joan in Cheshire

Ralph’s on SNY?? Now, I’m really mad at my cable company for not including them.

  66. ed

thanks andy- i just posted last night that a Minnesota paper is still floating Santana rumors with us as the front runner- it would cost an awful lot for him and whos expendable just connecting the dots…. I said the about Milledge when his attitude was brought into question, i could see him moved but i hope not

  67. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

Joan:: I feel so lucky I’m on campus. We get SNY, NESN, and YES.

  68. Craigelmer

Lo Duca is handling all the pitchers down the stretch because we have a great manager name Willie Randolph

  69. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    Ed:
I hope we get him. I don’t want to sell out the farm system, but he’s the best pitcher in the majors. Imagine him under The Jackets watchful eye…

  70. John Delcos

To JK: He’s certainly not the same player he was last season. A big off-season question is to find out why. I wouldn’t trade him because I don’t believe this is a permanent downhill slide. Maybe he needs a year like this. ... I just don’t think Rickey Henderson is the answer to straightening him out.-JD

  71. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

Joan in Cheshire: I think Ralph is done for the day. Listening to Ralph always makes me feel better.

  72. Benny Ayala

“The Metaphor Handbook” by John Delcos. A Bantam paperback.

  73. Rasputin

    I can see it now:

“Rickey’s not the answer to Reyes, Rickey the answer to Rickey. Rickey can still hit, still run, still catch. Rickey’s the answer to winning.”

  74. ed

    John,

The best thing Omar could do if Willie stays (which i expect) is have the pitching staff run by Rick Peterson – like we talked about before Offense cordinator style and that would include catching assignments.

  75. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

Ed: Any trade for Santana will have to include Maine as part of the deal.

  76. Joan in Cheshire

Could it be that Castro is a better catcher with the young pitchers than Lo Duca? And, hasn’t Maine had a game like this once before?

  77. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    Scott::
Then I will pass. Maine has too much upside.
    (see today)

  78. Benny Ayala

I wouldn’t trade Reyes, either. He showed enough over the first half of the year to make you think he could be the best all-around player in the game.

I understand that he’s only 24 and 24-yr-olds often have regressive slumps. But this isn’t a sophmore jinx. He’s been around for five years and, as noted by others, the regression has impacted most every aspect of his game. Even when he was struggling as an hamstring-challenged second baseman, he never looked so lost as he does now.

Perhaps he needs Danny Bonaduce to “rock his foundation.”

  79. D.J. Short

Right. The Twins will want a stud pitcher.

  80. TomG

I wouldn’t trade Maine either, other pitchers yea, not Maine.

  81. Joan in Cheshire

    Scott from Pelham:

I love Ralph – he is one of the most beloved of all the old guys. He and Tim McCarver were great together – between them they knew or had played with almost everyone!!

  82. John Delcos

Maine has never been better. ... And, Milledge is also playing stud baseball today.-JD

  83. Sam G. - Portland, Or

It could very well be that Reyes is just flat out tired. Up until was it late august he’d been in every game this season. I’m hopeful this is an anomaly of this season and he’s learned from it. He certainly has learned the past seasons.

My only reason for floating him is to get into his head. Certainly not to trade him. There’s going to be no better top of the order guy than Reyes.

I just hope he can snap out of it for spring.

  84. D.J. Short

Nice to see Milledge finally in the lineup, huh?

  85. Benny Ayala

It begs the question what you think Maine will become. Does he project to be a #1 or more of a #3?

#3s grow on trees. A true ace is hard to find.

  86. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    L-Millz…stud today.

  87. JK

JD: I just don’t understand why they would hire a coach who dogged it with the Mets as a player and who pissed off his teammates by playing cards during the playoffs. The attitude that led Rickey to do these things is still there. Does this attitude rub off on Reyes?

Question for the armchair managers: It’s 9-0. Do you take Maine out now in anticipation of a all-hands-on-deck game in Philadelphia on Monday? Who do you bring in if so? Maine has a no-hitter going.

  88. Sam G. - Portland, Or

Joan, the palsy was really an unfair burden on Ralph. He’d still be going strong if not for it.

I remember when I was a kid I thought Kiner was a bore. It’s only when I got older did I learn the nuances of the game from actually listening to Ralph.

  89. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

Leave Maine in. Pedro will be able to pitch Monday, I feel.
He said he could go yesterday…

JD will give you better insight.

  90. Sam G. - Portland, Or

Benny, I disagree to an extent. I think 5’s come from trees. When you’re looking for a strong rotation you need a solid 3 and a semi solid 4. That’s why Trachsel was for the most part a 5. Not very solid a pitcher but could give you a solid game now and again.

  91. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    BENCHES CLEAR.

This may not end well for the Marlins…

  92. D.J. Short

get out of the way. oh no.

  93. ed

finally some fire- the jacket was ready to fight

  94. D.J. Short

we don’t want any suspensions, but i like to see the fire!

  95. Joan in Cheshire

No TV here – what is happening?

  96. ed

reyes is laughing and while the team is fighting

  97. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

Joan in Cheshire: So true about everyone. Ralph was talking about playing for Frankie Frisch.

Marlins are totally unprofessional today. Garcia needs to be thrown out.

  98. Benny Ayala

In tribute to Lastings, I was going to share some of his poetry with the group, but I’m concerned about the recently enacted Terms of Service agreement.

  99. D.J. Short

David is truly the leader of this team. No question.

  100. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

Rick Peterson got fired up and went right after Miguel Olivo.

Utter shock that he, of all people, would be the one to step up and yell.

  101. TomG

This is what this needed a month ago, have them blow a team out, have a team throw at them and show emotion. Unfortunately
    to little to late.

  102. Joan in Cheshire

Sam – I saw Ralph and his wife at Ralph Kiner Day. Finally the Mets brass honored a guy who really deserved it. He seems to have come to grips with the palsy, and I guess I have too, I didn’t have any trouble understanding what he said. Nice famiily, too.

  103. ed

hey anybody know what the deal is with castillo’s knees can they be fixed, i’d like to see him back if his knees arent really bad

Keith ” a fists fight might do this club some good”

  104. John Delcos

No punches … but a lot of yelling. The Jacket did a lot of finger pointing, but David Wright pulled him back. Wright should be named Captain today. ... Warnings given. ... I was at the Red Sox-Yankees brawl at Fenway when Pedro tossed Don Zimmer. This was a walk in the park compared to that.-JD

  105. dr

good for rick peterson he wasnt going after olivo he was going after the marlins manager and olivo got in the way. good for him he knows that his panzy manager randolph isnt going to get fired up.. i said in 3 weeks ago that willie needed to have mota throw at someone to get this team going. good for peterson to show some emotion

  106. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    And there is the fight!

  107. dr

    wow

  108. D.J. Short

Right. If that would have become a confrontation we could have seen some Mets suspensions ala The Knicks – Heat series back in the day. David Wright saved possible disaster right there.

  109. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

John: What I don’t understand is Duque got thrown out earlier this year with no warning and today when everyone knows that Garcia threw at Castillo. What a joke.

  110. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

I hope no one gets hurt. Remember Bill Lee.

  111. John Delcos

Well, a lot of punches thrown there. ... Reyes in the middle of it. It looked as if he said something.-JD

  112. D.J. Short

    Holy crap.

  113. John Delcos

Reyes on third. It looks like he’s staying in the game.-JD

  114. D.J. Short

Did the Phillies make a phone call to Miguel Olivo?

  115. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

Sandy Alomar Sr. took a shot to the head~

  116. Sam G. - Portland, Or

damn fox has me blacked out on the net. The blackout rules are archaic.

  117. D.J. Short

They were definitely trying to egg Reyes on—are you kidding me?

  118. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

Willie please take Reyes out. We don’t need him to get hurt.

  119. D.J. Short

Where is Willie Randolph in the middle of this?

  120. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

DiFelice will probably get suspended. I doubt Reyes will have anything, all he did was put his hand in the air, and Olivo charged…

  121. TomG

I would love to know what Reyes said to Olivo, wow, he went crazy. I’m sure Milledge rounding first base after hitting a homerun with his hand in the air pointing like where number one didn’t help.

  122. JK

Wow, I don’t think I’ve seen one of those involving the Mets since the Bobby V days. Hope no one got hurt.

For those of you without video, Ollie had to be restrained as he was getting into it with someone on the Marlins.

Mets have a 9-run lead. As a precaution, I’d take Castillo and Beltran out because of their bad knees.

  123. ed

    is Olivo gone

  124. John Delcos

It looked as if Reyes and Marlins catcher Miguel Olivo were jawing. ... Olivo charged Reyes at third. ... Kudos for Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera for getting in the way between the two. ... The guy that needs to be checked on is Oliver Perez. He might have taken one.-JD

  125. D.J. Short

This is one of the most surreal games I can remember, and it’s not even close to over.

  126. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

John: Maybe this will snap Reyes out of his funk. I sure hope so.

  127. dr

good for cabrera helping sandy and geting in front of reyes..

  128. John Delcos

Olivo is out of the game.-JD

  129. John Delcos

Scott: How will we know? There could only be one game left.-JD

  130. Joan in Cheshire

Sam – I’m blacked out on this game, but I will apparently be able to get the Phillies game – Does this make any sense????????

My Congressman – Chris Murphy, CT.5 District – lives in my neighborhood—maybe it’s time to get him involved in this—even though he is a Red Sox fan.

  131. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

John: Lots of quotes in the clubhouse after this game.

  132. D.J. Short

Yes, Cabrera has a brain after all.

  133. TomG

If anyone took a shot it’s was sandy alomar, he got in between and it appeared to take a left cross to the face from Olivo who came in charging and swinging.

  134. John Delcos

    Scott: Yes sir.-JD

  135. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    John Maine is amazing.

  136. Joan in Cheshire

John – Who names the Captain? Owner, GM, Mgr? I seem to recall Derek thanking Mr. Steinbrenner for the honor.

  137. TomG

boy, where was this intensity three weeks ago, this really makes me mad.

  138. Sam G. - Portland, Or

    Joan,

The entire blackout situation is insane. Fox basically has the time period from 1pm to 7pm on saturday all to themselves. Even if they aren’t showing a game, they have the blackout, unless they give the ok to a particular broadcast which they have done several times this year to SNY.

  139. TomG

wow, Maine is looking like Sandy Kofax out there. I would like to know how a team could wake up after blowing a 7 game lead with one game left, ridiculous.

  140. Doug

It is about time they showed some fire, lets hope that it is enough

  141. Joan in Cheshire

I really shouldn’t complain too much about no TV. Except for the fight, Tom and Howie paint such wonderful word pictures that I am really ‘in the game’.

  142. ed

Dj- i agree this is wrights team do you think its important for him to where the C or is that just us fans

  143. Doug

There should be no blackouts this time of the year. I am in NC and cannot see what is the biggest game of the year. MLB needs to fix this problem.

  144. D.J. Short

Tom and Howie have done a wonderful job on the radio today. We are lucky to have them.

  145. Joan in Cheshire

Sam, not only am I subject to the Fox and ESPN Blackout rules, but my cable station refuses to carry SNY. Double trouble here in Central Connecticut.

  146. TomG

It’s just mind boggling how this team shows what they have and can do yet for three weeks they played like the worst team in baseball, I just don’t get it, really don’t. I didn’t even realize that maine has ######## going, won’t say it because i don’t want to jinx him.

  147. ed

Hey anyone who checks in on my site- i apoligize for some recent posts, i gave a kid a try was having a hard time keeping up over the summer and finally had to cut him loose, fely bad doing it but they were some bad posts

  148. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

My goodness, the offense is EXPLODING.

  149. LoveEmHateEm

Just don’t give up on these Mets.

Woah, justification for Castro in for the injured Lo D just cleared the fence for 11-zip.

  150. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    Ed:
keep the site to yourself, thats what i do.
    i know i can trust myself…sometimes…

  151. TomG

There is no doubt that Reyes jiving and duking and hand gestures gotta stop because I think it’s classless and Milledge is right behind Reyes with this garbage. Somebody onn the mets is going to get there head taking off one day if these two keep up there cockiness.

  152. DG

Defense of Milledge, he clearly thought he hit a foul ball at first.

  153. TomG

    dg,

explain milledge standing on second with two outs and a pop up to short, can’t take it, too much.

  154. D.J. Short

Reyes is getting cheered like he’s Muhammad Ali when he’s nothing more than Butterbean.

  155. dr

do any of you guys know how millions and billions the nets have to pay MLB for the rights to air these games? the blackout rights are about all that the nets get back in return for their money. if you want to watch every game get directv..otherwise stop complaining

  156. dr

and how do you defend milledge for not running from 2nd with 2 outs?

  157. D.J. Short

Boo hoo. Give me a break.

  158. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

Ball bounces off Wright, and goes right to Reyes and they still get him out at first.

    Johnny’s day…

  159. Doug

Please tell me the bull pen is just getting work in.

  160. TomG

this is about when Maine runs out of gas, that’s the only negative against Maine, endurance, seems to run out of gas to early.

  161. ed

hes getting gassed – 98 pitches cant find the zone, great game but this is it….

  162. TomG

wow, great come back Maine, who is this guy.

  163. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

It’s his pitchcount. It getting up there.

  164. DG

Absolutely no justification for Milledge at second. I was just saying that Milledge hit a cue shot and clearly thought it was going out of play. When he first started running it was almost like he was still stunned, then he turned on the jets.

  165. ed

Maine stays in until he gives up a hit

  166. DG

No way there’s a pitch count on Johnny Maine right now. One hit, however, and he’s out.

  167. TheRopolitans.com -- A Mets Blog

    Agreed Ed.

  168. TomG

Like the great Butch Cassidy and Sun Dance kid once said, WHO ARE THOSE GUYS!!!!

  169. TomG

boy, Gary Cohen, Have you ever heard an announcer who constantly opens his mouth and Jinx the home team, shut up Gary, Please, for once, shut up, can’t take him.

  170. Sam G. - Portland, Or

With the way pitchers are treated in the minors, it’s going to be a very special pitcher who finally gives the Mets their no hitter.

Running out of gas in the 7th makes it impossible.

  171. adl

There are NO words adequate for describing how much I hate Fox today!!!!

  172. DG

Anybody want to praise Matt Chico?

  173. ed

whats the deepest anybodies taken it

  174. TomG

Baseball is a crazy game. If some how the nationals could find a way to win tonight and the Mets and Phils win tomorrow there will be a one game playoff in Philadelphia, man how I would sign up for that right now. The only reason I’ saying this is because i think the marlins have done the Mets a favor and finally woke them up.

  175. ed

    oh man on that

  176. dr

    congrats maine.. helluva game

John Maine leaves to a Standing O after seven and two thirds innings of a no hit game. Wow.

  181. TomG

I actually was at one of those games, i think the game I was at was against the padres.

  182. D.J. Short

    Amazing performance.

Tom and Howie reporting that Maine also had a no hitter into the seventh inning against the Marlins in June. Wonder if Castro was his catcher then?

Guess this is what Tom and Howie were referring to:

    Maine’s no-hit through 7 lifts Mets

John Maine took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the New York Mets scored four times before Dontrelle Willis retired a batter in a 9-2 win over the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night.

  190. JK

LOL, TomG, aren’t you the one who said the Mets would not win another game this season?

  191. DG

Funny thing is that Maine & Perez are still the two Met starters most likely to throw a no-no. Course, Petey may do it next year when he is throwing 92-93 with his new arm.

  192. dr

    come on chico!!

    They missed the extra O.

Do you know anything about this John?

  195. D.J. Short

    *Tom and Howie, my bad.

  198. John Delcos

DJ … Yes. That is correct. They misspelled it. Also, the words were written in red and blue, which are Phillies colors.-JD

  199. TomG

    JK,

yes I did, i said they wouldn’t win another game, there, I said it. I am also a psychotic mets fan. I love this kid Gomez, he is only 20, power will come, hitting will come with experience.

WILLIE RANDOLPH ON THE GAME AND THE METS POSITION CONSIDERING YESTERDAY: ``It’s bizarre. You can’t figure it out. ... Pitching always sets the tone. That’s what’s been missing. We need to feed off this.’’

WILLIE RANDOLPH ON THE BRAWL: ``I thought they were fooling around (Miguel Olivo and Jose Reyes). Something was lost in translation. ... Olivo has always been a little bit of a hot head.’’

JOHN MAINE: ``We needed a win today. It was do or die. We treated it like a playoff game.’’

JOSE REYES ON THE BRAWL: ``(Olivo) looked at me and said, `Do you want to fight?’ I said, `Let’s go.’ ‘’

TOM GLAVINE ON TOMORROW’S START: ``It certainly runs the gambit of emotions. First, it was a game where I hoped it would mean nothing (that the Mets would have clinched). Then I hoped it would be a game that meant something.”

DAVID WRIGHT ON THE METS’ SITUATION: ``We’re a resilient team. I’m still upset we weren’t able to care of this sooner.’’

    ******************

NOTES and NUMBERS: Lastings Milledge tied a career-high with three RBI in his first multi-homer game. ... Wright extended his hitting streak to 16 games. ... 227. LoveEmHateEm

It’s all tied atop the NL East with 1 more game to go. The Phils lost 4-2.

You can’t tell me that Met Magic isn’t at play…Casey and Gil and Joan and Tug are definitely looking out for ‘em, believe U me. DO NOT count these Mets out!!!!!! Now it’s the Philthies who are under pressure. Good! I hope they enjoyed their fiesta last night with all that stupid-ass ‘towel waving’ when they had their brief ‘visit’ as sole possessors of first place. Now tomorrow night they can use those towels to cry into after the Mets clinch. But before they do that, they better Express Mail a couple of ‘em over to Hanley so he could have something to sop up the blood with, which will be pouring out of his pre-punched loud mouth sometime tomorrow afternoon. Who’ll be the Ramirez jaw breaker? My money is on Lo Duca’s bat. (Yeah, Paulie’s pretty much pissed all the time anyway).

Nats win!! We’re tied!! Tomorrow is another day!!

  233. John Delcos

  234. Seaver fan

    Everyone please answer:
is it a good thing or a bad thing that the benches cleared today? is it good to be going into a heated matchup with the division literally on the line?

  235. TomG

I just checked out a Philly blog just to see what those fans have been saying and this one fan actually commented last night how the phils win last night and the Mets lost last night wiped away the phils having over 10,000 loses. That’s why philly fans are pathetic, are you kidding me, Philly haven’t done anything yet and that wiped away the historic over 10,000 loses. I thought Yankee fans were the worse but there not, it’s the Philly Pathetic.

  236. Benny Ayala

So, what about Reyes not running out that tapper and Milledge not running at all on that two-out pop-up? Are the fundamental problems still there, albeit a bit obscured by a big win—or is everything hunky dory again?

  237. DG

The sick part of me wants the Phils & Mets to show down on Monday. Somehow getting through that would take a big monkey off the Mets backs, but I’d take your scenario LEHE.

John, figured so, but when I realized you had posted a comment after that post was made, I had to say something.

As to whether you are anti-Mets, JD, I appreciate that you’re willing to pierce the bubble of the team at times as well as to speak your mind. But I’ve always taken your frankness in some ways to come from the standpoint of a fan.

Phils lose and now the Brews cool the Friars. What a day!

  238. TomG

I would think that it would help the Mets but the way this season has gone who knows. To me it’s been a nightmare the last few weeks and I keep thinking I’m going to wake up and the Mets are in the playoffs.

  239. Benny Ayala

Seaver: I think it was a good thing for a team that’s been lacking a certain fire in the belly. And it will be doubly good if it somehow wakes Reyes up from his slumber. The Marlins might have hurt the Phils more than the Mets ever could.

  240. ed

    Seaver,
    good thing

  241. DG

Can’t speak for Reyes, but I really thought that Milledge assumed his ball was foul after cueing it, almost fell backward off the swing actually, and then started to run when he realized the ball was fair. He acted more stunned than lackadaisical though I suspect he’ll get killed on it because he’s Milledge.

  242. ed

jd- who pitches Monday if theirs a playoff… Phils say it’s Lohse but he just pitched two innings today

  243. DG

    Good thing. Very good thing.

  244. Benny Ayala

I was referring to when Milledge was on second base (after his cue shot) and held his position when the batter hit a pop-up for the third out. It appeared that Milledge had forgotten how many outs there were.

  245. DG

Benny, clearly he did. Forgot about that part.

  246. Benny Ayala

    It’s gotta be Kendrick.

  247. DG

John, do you think Perez will be suspended along with DeFelice for their actions in the brawl?

  248. ed

teams playing tight no doubt… you could say willie’s lost the team or that the yougnsters are chocking… either way it’s a problem, the vets aren’t helping the youngsters or the mgr has lost his team, you have a mix for a purpose, between knowledge and energy so far in the past two weeks they havent been jelled. Today that all came to an end and a win tomorrow regarless of the season outcome, puts all those questions to rest…...

  249. Dan Gurney

    Question:

If there is a monday game at Philadelphia, what time will it start?

  250. ChiliGTC

I imagine a day game b/c they want whoever wins to get the most amount of rest for Wednesday’s start of the playoffs…

  251. Billy

The Mets are alive, but what really bothers me is the classless actions by both Reyes and Milledge, there is the right way to play this game, like Mickey Mantle did, and the wrong way….....like Rickey Henderson did…....I live and die with my Mets, to see Reyes act like he did, especially when John had the no-no going, well is just disgraceful…....Willie should have benched him, but he did not have the balls like Gil did in ‘69 with Cleon Jones…....The guy Reyes should look at is Luis Castillo, a true professional, the man has bad knees, but still fundmentaly is adble to play the game the RIGHT way….

  252. Billy

Prayers to Endy Chavez and his family….may your sister rest in Peace Endy…...God Bless …..

  253. Billy

    To loveEmHateEm,

Gil, Joan, Casey and Tug are definately watching their team…let’s jus be alittle weary of old Tugger, he did win one with the Phils!!!

I also like to think that Bob Murphy is up there calling the games for all the legions of Met fans who have passed!!!

  254. Billy

Just one More Happy Recap!!!!!!!!! Please!!!

Before I say Goodnight to my fellow Met fans, we have a game tomorrow that counts…...how it will all end up we don’t know…..but tomorrow is the saddest day of the year ….it is the last day of the regular baseball season….......like Joe Buck once said, when you need the rose the most,,,,,,it leaves…..

    God I love this game…..Go Mets…..Godspeed

  255. Jim from LI

Mets get Dontrelle for Sunday – just our luck – he always throws a good game at Shea.

  256. Jeff

JD: I saw what you wrote before the game. Ironic, no…Washington did beat Philadelphia….LOL I guess the PHILLIES can’t handle the PRESSURE of first place.
This month it was clear that the PHILLIES DON’T have a better team they were just playing better.
Now the Mets have some momentum and I am optimistic that they’ll do their job on the field tomorrow.
We’ve regained some control of our destiny. Win out and make the playoffs (even if that means a game on Monday in Philadelphia).
And what’s with those towels? They look like A$$e#
    I HATE THE PHILLIES…..

    GO METS!

MAINE PITCHES A GEM AS METS
FIGHT THEIR WAY BACK TO 1ST PLACE

Two rarities almost occured at Shea on Saturday—a no-hitter and a ‘Pier 6 brawl’. Well the brawl occured, if that’s what you want to call it. It was more of a gathered discussion except for one “bad boy” who was sent to the showers early. But more on this Saturday afternoon rumble later. (I was actually rooting for a brawl several times during the course of the season, especially during the June swoon and a couple of weeks ago, figuring something like a good ol’ fashioned ass whoopin’ would be just the thing to unite and propel the Mets to a boatload of victories).

The only thing that alluded the Mets yesterday was their first no-hitter—again. On Saturday, Maine pitched as brilliantly as any Met had in years as he mowed and filleted the Fish left and right striking out 14 and allowing just one hit in 7 2/3 innings. It was then that a Marlins backup catcher hit the slowest of ground balls up the 3rd base line that a charging Wright had to eat. That sad little shot was the only hit given up by His Majesty King John Maine as his wizardry on the mound coupled with the resurgent Mets 19-hit offense left them 1/2 game out of 1st place at game’s end. Later in the afternoon, the Nats dropped the Phils 4-2 to make short the Phils tenure as sole occupants of first place as the Mets elbowed their way back atop the NL East to join the shocked Phils.

The Mets win didn’t come without problems as tempers flared in the Mets half of the 5th inning and a sight which is very seldom seen, a Mets bench clearing, was the result of an errant pitch by Harvey Garcia that ran behind Castillo. A few moments after that fracas settled down which was nothing more than a lot of jawing and mouthing off, another one erupted (this one with a little more fervor) when during a pitcher change, Fish catcher Olivo charged Reyes who at the time was on 3rd and was jawing at the Fish who were congregating on the mound. Olivo charged Reyes from the mound and all hell broke loose again.

However, this is a new century and fights ain’t what they used to be, pa! Aside from the off-target punch thrown by Olivo that missed Reyes and skimmed off of 3b coach Alomar along with several other sporadic eruptions consisting of minor grabbing and shoving, nothing of significance materialized as no other punches were thrown. Just a lot of jawing and moaning. I was waiting for Kevin Mitchell to come out and start giving oxygen-depriving headlocks a la 1986 to any Marlin that was within his reach.

But the ironic twist o’ the day came when the 2nd string Marlins catcher Paul Hoover (in for the ejected Olivo who Reyes earlier fiddled with from his perch at 3rd base) was the guy who “Qualled” Maine for the lone hit. The moral of the story: A little less lip and a little more heads-up baseball…REYES!!!

  258. Art Vandelay

could some1 clarify the tiebreakers for me? lets say the mets win, rockies win, phillies win, and the padres lose do the mets and phillies play a 1 game playoff for the division and the rockies and padres play a 1 game playoff for the WC? or does the loser of the mets phillies game play the winner of the padres/rox game? lol what happens if the dbacks lose and padres win or w/e wow

  259. Scott

Some of you guys really need to grow up. Rag on Hanley all you want…if a Mets player said that you’d be rah-rah. Anyhow, the Mets will probably end up with Ramirez one day – - when he too is past his prime and after he brings S. Fla another Championship. Then he can join the likes of Delgado, Castillo, Conine, Castro, Mota, Alou, Lo Duca, etc. To those Mets fans that realize Hanley is just anxious to play the game and respond to obvious bad words from both sides…I wish you luck tomorrow/Monday in hope of a spot in the playoffs.

  260. John Delcos

Just thought I would check in before calling it a night.

    A few things:

-I will post in the morning something on tiebreakers.

-No time set for one-game playoff Monday. It should be in the day, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it is a night game. One scenario could have Mets playing in Philly Monday then in Colorado on Tuesday. Thanking MLB and the networks in advance for that screwball scenario. That’s bad for the sport and warps the playoffs, but as long as MLB gets to cash the checks it doesn’t care.

-About those Ramirez comments I posted. They come from the fact the Mets irritate a lot of people. Reyes and Milledge didn’t help matters any today. Why do things that annoy the other team? Makes no sense. That crap Reyes does in the dugout after homers has to stop. So does stealing with a big lead. And, don’t you think Reyes had to say something, or gesture in some way to Olivo? Why else would he sprint across the field like that? Don’t get me wrong, I like Reyes. But, I would like him better if he didn’t act like such a punk at times.

-No starter yet for Monday. Probably Mike Pelfrey or Orlando Hernandez, or a combination between the two.

-Paul Lo Duca questionable for tomorrow.

-Oliver Perez is available out of the pen tomorrow.

-Yeah, I can see Perez and Mike DiFelice get nailed for a game or two for their part in the brawl.

-Had the umps been miked today like I have long suggested, Reyes’ exchanged with Olivo could have been picked up.

I hope you night owls keep it up.-JD

  261. Art Vandelay

dude ur not jd, jd has his in bold r u like trying to impersonate him or something? cuz its bad, jd is not that critical of the players ur prolly a weird lil phillty fan

  262. Mike C.

I humbly suggest a new catchphrase for this season.

“Amazin” and “Miracle” and “Ya Gotta Believe” were all great for their times and their places, but this is a different time and a different place and it needs its own turn of word.

    And so I offer:

    ”#@&% It, Why NOT Us?”

Y’know? A nice ring to it. A now kinda ring to it.

#@&% It, Why NOT Us? Lets go Mets!

  263. fcooky

The Marlins are playing with the Mets’ emotions… and will crush New York tomorrow.
Their season over, delegated to last place in the east, they let the Mets take saturday’s game by resting and just hanging out at the ballpark. Winners of 4 straight before saturday’s game, they know they can win Sunday to close out the season. It will be a confident victory and the final nail in the coffin for the Mets this year

  264. Benny Ayala

2007 catchphrase: “We don’t want it bad enough”

  265. TomG

    JD,

I totally agree about Reyes and his antics with the hand jiving. I personally think it’s classless and needs to stop. I can understand now why Glavine stated on WFAN that teams this year have it in for the Mets and want to beat them. Yesterday during the Mets Broadcast on TV Darlin made a comment also that if Reyes and Milledge want to celebrate the home run do it in the dugout not on the on deck circle. All your doing is firing up the other team. Unfortunately now you also have Milledge and the two are going to piss a lot of people off because Milledge is very cocky.

The celebrating by all these clowns has got to stop. It is one thing when the crowd is wild and asks for a curtain call. Just tip your cap from the steps and go in to the dugout. BE PROFESSIONAL. I am shocked that Willie still tolerates this nonsense. If curtailing their exuberance is going to affect their field on the play, GET RID OF THEM. Get me some real ballplayers. That is about as lame a reason to allow it as I can imagine. I don’t want to compare the Mets to the Yanks, but you would never see this in the Bronx. Celebrate amongst yourselves in the clubhouse.

Ron Darling knows all about how excessive celebrating causes other teams to resent you and post pictures of your team on bulletin boards with “can anyone beat these ***holes?” on it.

Going to the game today…yesterday I adopted a small black cat and on the way home from the shelter decided to name it Shea…this was before yesterday’s game.

Here’s hoping little Shea continues to bring us good luck.

    GO METSIES!

I don’t know if that was the real Delcos or not, but it does seem a little strong to call Jose a “punk.” His post-HR celebrations seem more a manifestation of exuberance than anything negative. It’s the same exuberance that helps make him the dynamic player he is and stretch doubles into triples. If he loses that passion and joy then he no longer is the same Jose. And I thought they already told Jose to tone down the handshakes by confining them to the dugout. I find nothing wrong with them as long as they’re not done on the field. I missed what he and Milledge did on the on-deck circle yesterday. Was it merely a high-five or something innocuous like that, or one of those fancy handshakes?

As for stealing with a lead, I think anything done when the lead is 8 runs or less is fine. Is the opposing team going to promise not to try to comeback from that deficit before Jose promises to stop stealing bases?

Everyone is worrying about Jose’s celebrations and lack of hustle sometimes. But where are the veterans? Omar keeps saying they are there so the young kids can learn from them. But what type of message does that send to the kids when Delgado and Franco (when he was there) don’t always run out a grounder? And if you want your kids to play the game the right way, then don’t bring in a coach who dogged it on the field for your own team nonetheless, and who played cards in the clubhouse during a critical playoff game.

As for other teams always wanting to beat the Mets, maybe that has to do do with their standing atop the division for so long more than anything else.

The idea that the other teams wanted to beat them sure caused the ‘86 Mets to tone things down, eh?
