-Orlando Hernandez will be available to work out of the bullpen over the weekend.
-Manager Willie Randolph would not commit to a starter for Monday’s playoff. Why should he? Doing so is negative thinking. Randolph wants to sound as if the Mets will take care of business before Monday. (By the way, we’re thinking Mike Pelfrey or Hernandez if the game is needed.
-Moises Alou’s 30-game hitting streak was the longest by a New York player since Joe DiMaggio hit in 56 in 1941.
-The rotation: Saturday, John Maine (14-10, 4.07) vs. LHP Chris Seddon (0-1, 6.89); Sunday, Tom Glavine (13-7, 4.14) vs. LHP Dontrelle Willis (10-15, 5.20).

Regardless of what happens, I want to thank this ballclub for the last three years of wonderful baseball. It is not easy being in the same town with America’s most historic sports franchise in the yankees. It is not easy the comparisons many in the nyc media give between the house of wilpon and the house of steinbrenner. I want to thank the ownership, the players and coaches for making new york mets baseball exciting again. Where there are players who care and have given back to the community. The memories of some fans and media are very selective. Remember Robby alomar? Mo Vaughan, Haircuts going on in the dugout while there were games going on? The Wilpons, for all their flaws took a gamble in hiring Omar Minaya, willie randolph and changing the culture of this club. I am tired of the “why can’t the mets be like the yankees?” garbage the print media, wfan, espn and other lovers of Steinbrenner give to fans in nyc and elsewhere. Yes, the slide has hurt. who knows what will happen. but these last three years have been exciting. thank you, Mr. wilpon, Mr. Minaya, Manager Randolph and the players on this wonderful club. If you lived in another city, you would be appreciated more
Mike,
One failed playoff appearance in 3 years is nothing special anywhere. Sorry.
John, why has nobody taken Willie to task for not starting Pedro on Wednesday so that he could be ready for Monday if needed?
Joe D: According to what I heard, the doctors told the Mets to be really careful with Pedro’s arm and pretty much dictated that he be given extra rest. I would think no one considered they wouldn’t win the division. I can’t blame them for not planning for that.
