I am not a Willie Fan, but I respect what he has done for the Mets. You guys need to cut the man some slack. It doesn’t matter what move he makes. if the move he makes backfires, whether it’s the players bombing or just a willie mistake, you guys take it to willie…
For a team who hasn’t seen much post season, Willie came in and has add respectability to this franchise again. It’s not up to the level of the ‘80s, but as Wright and Reyes mature and the young pitchers find themselves, I can see this team making a long post season run year after year for some time.
PLEASE GIVE WILLIE SOME CREDIT! ;-)
Omar: I’m lovin’ it! :) LOL!
WHATG A WIN! CLUTCH HITS! CLUTCH CATCHES! WELL DONE SHOW AND SELE!!!! LET’S GO METS!!!!!!!
FROM THE CLUBHOUSE/
DAVID WRIGHT ON THE PHILLIES: ``Personally, I always take a look. It’s just a little crack in the door and we went through it. We haven’t taken advantage of it all year, but we did today.’’
BILLY WAGNER: He said he felt fine physically, just threw a bad pitch.
CARLOS BELTRAN RE-INJURED HIS KNEE: ``I told the guys that the only way I wouldn’t be there tomorrow is if they cut it.’’
OMAR MINAYA ON CARLOS BELTRAN’S TOUGHNESS: ``I’ve been in this game a long time, and what we’ve seen the last two games from Beltran … that’s toughness. He saved the game yesterday and he inspired us and saved the game today.’’
MOISES ALOU: ``I don’t think I have the arm or the mechanics anymore,’’ he said on the throw. ... At the plate: ``I’m feeling like every day I will have a good game.’’
WILLIE RANDOLPH: ``The baseball gods are making us pay a little bit.’’
BY THE NUMBERS: Alou’s hitting streak is at 27. ... John Maine struck out nine to tie his career high. ... Carlos Delgado’s homer was No. 431, tying him with Cal Ripken for 37th place on the All-Time list.
I scanned the blog after coming up from the clubhouse. Still annoyed by some of the attacks. Maybe I don’t get it. How hard is it to converse without attacking and getting foul? There’s no need for it.
I will just delete the garbage, and if you continue, there’s always blocking. Be nice or be gone.-JD
Whats with the Hate messages sent at me?
“I will just delete the garbage, and if you continue, there’s always blocking.”
Last thing im saying towards you.
Justin … I just deleted a bunch sent at you.-JD
John- Thanks for laying down the law. I can´t read this blog much anymore because of all the personal trash talk on it.
John—again … thanks. I really enjoy having a community in which I can cheer and moan. I’m grateful that you provide it.
Hey John, just saw the Mets have a makeup game at Shea with the Cards on Thursday—on what should have been an off day. If they clinch before then, do they have to play that game? Is it a certainty they’ll have to play it? I’d think not. StL doesn’t want to have to spend the $ for travel if they can avoid it…
Thanks John :)
Dave in Spain: Please don’t give up on the blog because of a few idiots. I will do my best to weed them out. You’re one of the best contributors and I don’t want to lose you because of a jerk.
Matt: I was told they would still play. The Cards don’t want to spend the bucks, but the Mets don’t want to give the ticket money back, either.
Justin: You are welcome. What I ask you is don’t take the bait. If somebody provokes you, let it be. Email me or bring it to my attention on the blog. Let me be the cop.
To all: If somebody is a jerk on the blog, ignore him. If you respond it just encourages it even more. Your silence will do it.-JD
John – Thanks again for this blog. I particularly appreciate your post-game reports from the clubhouse – I, for one, am usually curious what the players are saying after the game (and your perspective on it).
While I don’t always agree with Willie’s decision-making (particularly when it comes to his use of the bullpen), I think that a number of the posters were unnecessarily tough on him. I particularly liked his use of Sele and Showenweiss to close out the game – he realized he didn’t have much left out there and he did the best with his remaining arms. The one thing I was wondering when Showenweiss entered the game was that if he didn’t get Hermeida, do you think he would have intentionally walked Cabrera (moving the tying run into scoring position and putting the winning run on base), to setup another lefty/lefty matchup (against Jacobs)? Thankfully, we didn’t have to find out.
Incidentally, I agree with some of the early posters who questioned why Willie brought Heilman into yesterday’s game. I would hope that Smith (or even Collazo) could have been counted on for 3 outs with a 5 run lead (and if either got into trouble, Heilman was pretty much ready). It seemed strange to me at the time, and it definitely came back to hurt them again today.
Still, I’m thrilled with the win and the Phils loss.
JD,
Re: reyes.
i think he’s cut out for ny. there is something about him. energy. will to be great. i remember people questioned his starting the all-star game this year. he had 3 hits :)
I find it quite amusing that the posters on this and other Met blogs have spent the year humiliating Mota and Schoeneweis. Over and over, an endless procession every time each one came into the game, and a nightly procession of Willie is a fool for bringing them in, and yet when push comes to shove Friday and today, on the two games when the relief pitchers you love (relatively speaking that is because you don’t seem to have a love for any of your team), Feliciano, Heilmann and Wagner tried their best to lose the gmes on Friday and today, your saviors were Mota and Schoeneweis. Even John Delcos, the supposed professional in your midst, became extremely unprofessional when Mota took the mound. So, supposed Met fans, are you proud of the pitchers you love to hate or are you grumbling when you see the 2 saves this weekend by Scott?
To David Newhan’s Dad
even if everything you said is true. not saying it is.
your son sucks and shouldn’t be on the team :)
Mark – They definitely would not have intentionally walked Cabrera, but pitched very carefully. Maybe if it got to 2-0, then the other two intentional, but to start, I think Scho would have to try to get him to chase.
JD: I am new to this blog, but I must tell you I am appreciative of how personable you are while maintaining professionalism and respect on the blog. Your in the clubhouse reports are great!
You have a great job and I wish I could hang with the team like you do!
There is a lot of talk about Willie. I chimed in earlier, what are your thoughts?
Great win today. Gotta say that I disagreed with Willie’s choice to let Heilman close out yesterday’s game with a 5-run lead. That was unnecessary and almost cost them a win today. Other than that, I think most of the criticism lately of Willie has been misguided and sometimes moronic.
Guess what guys? Bud Black’s team just got swept and the Padres may not make the playoffs, and Yost is getting the heat in Milwaukee for his team fading down the stretch. There are no perfect managers, and it seems some Mets fans always think the grass is always greener on the other side. Perhaps the Mets can do better than Willie, but they can do a lot worse too.
I see Humber is getting the Wednesday start—just as I said he would!! This is probably one reason why he hasn’t been used in relief lately. This is the right move too. Better to have some backup starters like Pelfrey and Humber down the stretch than to move them into the bullpen at this point in the season.
Mota is a cheater who got $5 million as a reward for his illegal activities. He deserves every non-obscene/racial/religious insult. I have no animosity towards Schoenweiss, he is just a bad signing. But Mota has pitched well his last couple of outings, that is true. But I would rather lose with honest players than win with criminals.
“When honor is lost, what is left?”
we will prevail
to wilpon
can you sell half the team back to doubleday? please. or cuban or bloomberg
JD: Too enthralled watching the game to post today. Sorry..but boy was it wild with the blog and at the game. Also, I was switching back and forth from the Football Giant’s game…Yes I am a fan of BIG BLUE.
Way to go Mets…..It’s about time we get one to go our way. 3 out of 4 from the Marlins.
Yes, I do think Alou will and should come back.
As far as Gomez goes, it concerns me that he doesn’t seem to be able to hit well up in the big leagues. Love his speed and his defense but his bat is not yet part of the package.
ooof this blog is starting to become like the rangers blog!.....a lot of people get real testy (and i don’t know why, we’re all mets fans voice your opinion we should all be civil towards one another), i like to enjoy what you guys all say, and although i may only post once in a blue moon its still great insight, all this poop talk kinda draws back from the purpose of this.
Ok, alot of u are new Met Fans….we are now in the part of the season that reqiures the heavy artillery…...John, D. Can u PLEASE get the Diamond Vision Guys to play the one thing that can seal the deal???????
” THE CURLY SHUFFLE”!!!!!
All u 20 something Met fans need not apply…........
I was there the nite Doc beat the Cubs, we stormed the field, no one got hurt and there was eve a guy in a wheel chair picking up grass…....
Trust me John Delcos….” THE CURLY SHUFFLE ” is the key!!!!
Hey Mo, Hey Mo , Hey Mo Nyuk, Nyuk .Keith Hernandez said that song inspired the 86 MEts to greater heights. At this point we need all the MOJO we can get
Gomez is, like, twenty-two, man.
He’s supposed to be the total package at 22, in his first partial season in the majors?
C’mon now.
Gomez is VERY raw…but you can see the potential. Shoot, anyone that fast could hit .300 just bunting well. I have high hopes for him.
3 up in the loss for the division. 2 up for the wild card. it’s getting close.
any nervousness is officially gone for me. then again, i’m pretty optimistic
the offense is really clicking. it seems like 7+ runs every night. being able to knock a starter off the rotation for the playoffs and a reliever or two also will help this team.
my only concern is the mets are the only team in the playoffs w/o a #1 starter. true ace. no webb, peavy, zambrano (not the fix in 10 minutes one), sabathia, lackey, beckett, wang
other than that…it’s up in the air and i’ll take the guys we have.
finish off this division so the elderly and injured can rest :)
To David Newhan’s Dad (part 2)
if it really is you. nobody dislikes your son. the facts are: his level of play doesn’t warrant a spot on the bench of a playoff team. it’s not personal. he seems like a good guy. it was a terrible move (one of the few) by omar to depend on him along with franco to carry the bench. you may have noticed the difference when marlon anderson and conine came abroad or even when easley was here.
don’t take it personal. schoeneweis and mota are big boys who get paid very well. i’m sure they can handle it too. i personally don’t insult the players because i believe most do their best out there and i watch for fun. though i may comment on their lack of hustle
or performance.
best to david. hope he gets a spot on the d-rays or pirates next season
I don’t think Conine has provided much difference over Franco, besides maybe in the clubhouse.
I just saw video on Mike’d Up of Milton Bradley arguing with an umpire and having to be held back so hard that his manager threw him to the ground and hurt his knee, possibly severely so. It couldn’t have heppened to a better guy, except maybe John Rocker. I was at the game the last time the Padres came to Shea where he was yapping with the fans instead of going back in the dugout. Would teams please stop giving him chances and let him go away?! He is temperamental and, so it seems, fragile. Just go away.
IMets, While i appreciate your words, there is much hatred and venom towards many players on this blog. You only have to look to a post at 9:31. And by the way if I am Davids’ Dad (and I don’t know who would even have doubts), you know I’ve been around the game forever and a some more, wouldn’t you think I’d be a judge of a players abilities? But thanks for beng nice. Its a rarity here…..
Everbody smile—it’s a happy day! The Mets won their first pennant 38 years ago today…Happy Anniversary Met fans!

To David Newhan’s Dad:
why doubt you? 1. it’s the internet. every monkeys’ uncle is …....(fill in the blank) 2. i’d think your writing and grammar would be more impressive as a former award-winning sports journalist :)
sometimes we’re blind to our loved one’s flaws. your son isn’t a major league baseball player save a cup of coffee in 2004.
It just doesn’t seem right that Ross Newhan, a Hall of Fame baseball writer for the LA Times, would spend night and day on a LoHud blog. I also don’t understand why Ross Newhan, while posting to that blog, would abandon his hall of fame quality writing to write at the level of an average fan.
I suspect that the real point of “David Newhan’s Dad” is to help us appreciate our players, those who help us win on a daily basis, and those like Newhan whose effort flies under the radar because he doesn’t get much of a chance to contribute.
It’s not an offensive statement to say the Newhan would benefit from playing for a bad team. He tore it up in NO because he get sufficient time. He’s the type of utility man who’s AAAA on a team like the mets, but starts 60-70 games on a team that can afford that (see Joe McEwing).
Who would have thought that Scot Schoenweis would be credited with two of the biggest saves of the year? Keep this up Scot, and you could find yourself being the primary set up man to Wagner! :-)
The primary setup man to Wagner, since the night of the Sanchez taxi crash, is and will remain, Heilman. Coming in to this month, there were three potential BP battles.
1) Mota v. Smith – we all knew Willie would go with Mota, now he has some justification.
2) Show v. Collazo – again, WC never had a chance, but now you won’t find anybody who has a problem with carrying SS on the postseason roster, and even using him in big spots.
3) Sele v. No. 5 starter – Whether #5 is Pelfrey or Maine (depends on El Duque), I don’t think Sele has a shot at this point.
Here’s the question, does Pelfrey get cut if El Duque is back? Do you think the Mets might keep both, or carry Smith, and go w/ 12 pitcher, 13 position players? I think the reemergence of Green, making LM more of a bench presence, threatens Conine’s spot, if Willie decides on 12 pitchers.
Dearest iMets… Thank you very much for proving the vicious intent of so many Met posters. This is a very sad fandom…. one deserving of being the second team in the # 1 city in the US. I suspect David has had more cups of coffee in the bigs than you have had…..Your qualifications for judging talent are?
Dave in DC.. Very perceptive, and to think you even kept your critique on a positive note.
Mike C… Very good comment about Gomez. He’s a kid who was in the bigs before his time due to so many outfield injuries. The one thing he doesn’t need is an over expectant fan base. I’m afraid most Met fans won’t give him, Milledge, Pelfrey or Humber the time to develop.
Dave: I think if El Duque is ok for the first round, I see the staff as: Glavine/Pedro/El Duque/Perez/Maine/Schoenweis/Mota/Sosa/Feliciano/Heilman/Wagner. I can’t imagine the Mets carrying less than 11 pitchers given the reliance on the bullpen. So, if El Duque makes it I can see Pelfrey getting left back. I don’t think Joe Smith has a chance. If El Duque doesn’t make it and Pelfrey has a nice outing tonight, than I think Pelfrey makes it and Sele does not.
To David Newhan’s Dad:
“Thank you very much for proving the vicious intent of so many Met posters”
i didn’t say any thing vicious. honesty hurts the weak. i was very fair. your son isn’t qualified to be a major league baseball player. not on the mets. he’s probably on the team because fred wilpon loves the dodgers. (the team david’s daddy use to cover for the la times). it was probably a favor. are you friends with fred of jeffy? you never know with this organization.
“I suspect David has had more cups of coffee in the bigs than you have had”
no kidding, but i suspect that he’ll never be as successful as a baseball players as i am in my chosen profession. in fact, he’ll never be as successful as his daddy.
“Your qualifications for judging talent are?”
it doesn’t take a major league scout to notice that your son has been terrible outside of one year hitting in camden yards. i can’t think of a less qualified player to make the mets roster in the last decade.
i’ve read this blog for awhile. you’ve managed to put david newhan on the burner when nobody was slamming him. he wasn’t even on the radar. i actually think he’s a good guy.
For anyone out there who wants to know, here are the pitching matchups for the Brave/Philly series:
C. James vs. J. Moyer
T. Hudson vs. K. Lohse
J. Smoltz vs. A. Eaton
Hopefully the Braves will have their hitting shoes on and will be motivated to sweep the Phills and tie them for 2nd place. I’m thinking that Thursday’s game against St. Louis will be when the Mets clinch the division.
Dearest iMets; Wouldn’t you like a blog set up so people who have only amateurish knowledge of your profession (which of curse none of us know or should know) write things such as how you are a loser, make stupid nicknames of you and say how you or your boss should be fired because things go wrong on a given day. I’m sure you’d enjoy having us all write these things about you nightly. And as for any major league player getting time in the big leagues it is quite an accomplishment, given the nubmer of High School, College, and foreign born players there are, all vying for those few big league roster spots. The fact that you think a player who attains only limited time in the bigs is basically a loser shows how poor your knowledge is of big league baseball.
But you realy missed the larger point. The attitude in general to the players and Randolph and Omar is very hostile and diesrepectful. It is an attutude I hope you wouldn’t tolerate being aimed at you and your co-workers. And if you did accept that attitude you would lose the repsect of your peers.
You all can’t leave it y saying you’d do A vice B or your lineup would be X vice Y. You have degrade every player who you don’t want playing or the manager or GM at every opportunity.
To David Newhan’s Dad:
i don’t do any of the things that you mentioned. never called david or any other mets player a loser. i said he was a good guy who’s performance wasn’t good enough to be on the team.
medical school is very competitive. i wouldn’t go to a doctor who finished last in his class because it was “quite an accomplishment.” i went to one of the top universities in the country. if i graduated with low grades i wouldn’t have been happy about it. trust me.
you came on the blog to tell everyone how they should view the team including it’s main writer. grow up and consider investing in spell-check
Newhan’s Dad: I really don’t understand the degree of disapproval you’re expressing for the fan behavior on this and other Mets fan sites. I disagree with much of the criticism of Willie and some players, but as long as it is respectful and honest, then it’s fine with me. What’s so bad about having a critical viewpoint? Fans are certainly entitled to their opinions. We pay money to follow our teams by paying cable fees, fees for MLB gameday and XM radio, and by buying tickets and merchandise. They are dependent on our support. Are we not entitled to express opinions about them?
As for the comment made about Mota that you referenced, I read it and there was nothing disrespectful in it. I happen to agree with the entire post. The player cheated. Plain and simple. He broke the laws of the federal government as well as the rules of MLB. Why shouldn’t he be chastised? Not doing so IMO sends the wrong message to our kids. The message? It’s ok to cheat and you can still be rewarded as long as you say the right things when you get caught. IMO, the Mets sent the wrong message to kids by awarding this cheater a 2-year contract. Should have given him a 1-year at the very most.
I will say the criticism of Willie is sometimes disrespectful and sometimes laced with racist comments. But that only comes from a few fans. They are the exception rather than the rule. I think every team has ignorant fans like that.
