It’s Humber

Posted by: John Delcos - Posted in Uncategorized on Sep 23, 2007

First thing Willie Randolph told us this morning is Phil Humber will start Wednesday vs. Nationals.

The appearances were a lack of confidence in Humber, but that can’t be the case if you’re giving the ball to a rookie in the middle of a pennant race.

come on quit the bs about giving pedro extra rest WERE 1.5 GAMES UP NOW WE HAVE PELF AND HUMBER IN THE ROTATION AT THE MSOT IMPT TIME OF THE YR!

i still dont see why they didn’t use him earlier…i’m pretty sure the AAA ball club could have used him in the playoffs or something? he supposedly has good stuff?

How is using Pelfrey (who has been pitching well in each of his last three starts) or Humber in the pennant race any different than using Maine and Perez in last year’s playoff series against the Cardinals for games 6 and 7?
REMEMBER that Martinez has only thrown in four games and since we’re not in April, if we’re going to be able to count on him for this year, possible playoffs and for the remainder of his contract with us, we can’t BURN him out and hurt his shoulder now.
The caution makes sense….and I have more confidence in Pelfrey and Humber than in about half of our bullpen….

What are the probables for the upcoming week?

its different because last year we were desperate with the injuries to pedro and el duque, and also Maine already had proven to us during the regular season he can be very effective at times. this will be humbers 1st start ever

Thank the lord, I for sure thought Willie was going to say we are going to use Dave Williams to start against the nationals..

at least we have a chance with humber..

  7. Jeff

Nope, don’t agree with your rationale….First start ever? LOL
To me it doesn’t matter whether it’s April, July or September, if we need him (and we do) let’s put him to the test. The whole game doesn’t fall on his shoulders.
    Chill out Art!

Atta Boy Phil!!! Good Luck young buck!

Jeff, in response to your Abraham inquiry, although I think you were joking and actually know, he works for The Journal News and the LoHud Yankees blog.

  10. Jeff

SpiderPig: Thank you…honestly, I wasn’t joking. I live in Miami and really don’t know who the writers for The Journal News are….and I’m not a Yankee fan….lol
Thanks again for the information. :-)

To Art: Both Willie and Omar were asked this morning about the option of moving up Pedro, and both said they didn’t want to. They won’t have that luxury in the playoffs.-JD

Ah, I thought the smiley = joke. The link to the article is in the side box here that has “MEts news.”

    Jeff,

Art is right. Last yr we had no choice, this year we do. Ollie and Maine have been less than stellar lately, but we do have a choice. I too would like to see what Humber has balanced with no bullpen makes for a dicey situation. I have more confidence in Pelf as he seems to be ok now.

And yes a loss is a loss, but one in April is different than one with a week left.

    Thank you Omar.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this will be Humber’s first big league start right? He’s only made relief appearances so far if I remember correctly.

This is an interesting gamble. I’ve heard a lot of criticism for not giving Humber the ball earlier, but I can’t fault the organization for it. You can’t expect a first place team to call on a prospect who’s already upped his season inning total to career high by 60+ in his first full season period, let alone back from surgery. Its just bad decision making. The only way it possibly works is if you partially shut him down for a few weeks to get his strength back. A veteran understands the nature of a five day schedule over a full season and how to condition his body for it, a rookie doesn’t.
