Mets Chat Room

Welcome back to Mets Chat Room: the off-day edition.

Somewhere in my plans there’s a dinner and a movie, although not sure of the order. Any movie suggestions?

What is everybody doing tonight? I haven’t checked the listings, but I’m sure there’s a Mets Classic on.
Talking baseball, of course, is always a good option. Lots of issues, beginning with the believability factor of Duque making his next start. You can always rip Guillermo Mota, but let’s try to forget him for awhile. I also have a poll up and you can weigh in on the perfect pizza.

Have a good evening.

    I’m doing homework tonight, yay!

If El Duque comes back, I think he’ll be alright for the playoffs. If he doesn’t then thankfully the Mets have enough depth to make up for it. Despite how they’ve struggled the Mets with John Maine/ Oliver Perez are much better off than teams that have guys like Claudio Vargas, Justin Germano, Jason Marquis, Micah Owings, Kip Wells, or any of the clowns that Phillies have out there, because with thier rotation, who knows who thier official “4th” starter is.
And regardless, the 4th starter will only be used in the NLCS and will play no impact in the Divisional Series.
I’m pretty sure that Maine/Perez will be in the bullpen for the NLDS.

I checked the listings and there is no Mets Classic Tonight.

Mets are going with a 4-man rotation in the NLDS. First of all they play 4 games in 5 days so unless they put someone on short rest they will need 4 starters. Second, I believe Willie already stated they will go with 4. I have a feeling both Maine and Perez will be in the rotation and that El Duque will either be in the bullpen or off the roster for the first series because of his foot or other health issues.

What worries me is the back end of the bullpen should a game go into extra innings or one of the starters falters early. I don’t want to see Mota in the postseason.

Joan from Cheshire (or however you spell it)::

Hey…I’ve always wondered if Cheshire is the one by me, and it is! You said something about central CT in the pizza post, that how i know, I’m not stalking you don’t worry.

But yeah, I go to school down the street from you! I am currently a sophomore at Quinnipiac University!

Anyway, thought that was cool. :D

I’ve got last night’s game on the DVR for tonight.

High school back to school night.. had to peek into the kid’s locker to make sure he’s bringing books home when needed :)

There’s always checking in on the Phillies/Colorado game on-line, I suppose.

And there’s never a bad time to pick on Mota.

Ropol – how’s the Q hockey looking this year?

Waiting for the Dodger vs Padres game. Greg Maddux vs David Wells with Vin Scully broadcasting. Watched some episodes on DVD of “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”. Takes you to a bygone world with chain smoking and scientists using slide rules for computations (my 8th grade math teacher made us shell out $3 for slide rules. “You kids will thank me someday” she said.)

    Mota exsisto privatus
    Mota must be released

I mentioned this on another thread, but does anyone think the Mets would consider going with 10 pitchers and carry Carlos Gomez as a defensive replacement? If you agree that both Sele and Mota are worthless and that the left out starter could be the long man/6th or 7th inning pitcher, would it be a good idea for the Mets to do? If El Duque isn’t healthy, obviously this is a moot point. Any thoughts? It would be risky but I kinda like the idea of my late inning OF being Gomez/Beltran/Chavez.

  11. NateW

I dont really see Gomez serving a purpose on the postseason roster. Endy/Beltran/Milledge is a fine defensive OF for late in games.

I guess I would hope the 11th pitcher would be a Pelfrey/Collazo type who could go long relief if needed. If Duque is one of the starters you may want both Maine and Pelfrey/Collazo in the pen because of the age and question of the starters.

As much as it pains me to say it, Glavine is the only sure bet right now. He’ll go in games 1 and 5 of the NLDS.

I dislike the new playoff format for the Mets as Glavine is less likely to go on 3 days rest than someone like Peavy or Webb. The Mets have better options for a 4th starter. Imagine facing the D’Backs with Webb going in games 1-4-7 with Arizona having home field advantage… wouldnt be good.

Nate W: I’m not thrilled with Milledge being a late inning defensive replacement. But probably the only way Gomez makes it to the post season roster is if Delgado can’t play. As far as the D-Backs go, the Mets are two games up in the loss column for best record in the NL. so there is a good chance the Mets will have home field throughout.

  13. dave

Cargo is by far a superior defensive OF than Lastings.

I was watching a game last week and Darling did not seem impresseed with Pelfrey as a post season relief pitcher. I forgot what he said but my feeling was if it was up to him he would leave Pelf off.

  14. Mike C.

Well, yeah, Gomez is a better defensive outfielder…

But Milledge is still an above-average one.

Endy-Beltran-Milledge are a Gold Glover, a guy who’d be a Gold Glover if he were a regular and a guy who’ll one day be good enough to get a Gold Glove in a weak year for outfielders but he’s got some learning to do.

Gomez is a click better than Milledge with the D and with the foot speed but there’s already a lot of outfielders on the roster and Gomez’s bat is probably still a half-year of AAA from being consistently MLB ready.

If the Mets get into the playoffs, there’s only 25 slots on that roster.

Carrying two guys basically just as late-inning-replacement outfielders and pinch-runners doesn’t make a lot of sense, in terms of allocation of resources.
