Should the Mets lose tonight, and that’s a very real possibility considering they’ll face John Smoltz, that would mean yet another series loss to the Braves. In the grand scheme of things, it hardly matters.
The Braves are done for this year, and barring a collapse of historic proportions, the Mets will reach the playoffs.
Willie Randolph said “let’s get there first,’’ but that’s nonsense. He has to be thinking about what the Mets are going to look like come October. That’s why tonight is about one thing, and that’s getting John Maine right.
He’s been a .500 caliber pitcher since the break, and that’s what gets bumped to the bullpen. If he implodes tonight, then barring injury, the playoff rotation should be set.
