AUDIO: Wright for Captain/plus poll

I recently spoke with several Mets about the possibility of David Wright being named team captain. Manager Willie Randolph said he’s not inclined to name a captain now, but if he were Wright has the qualifications.

Wright told me that just his teammates believe he could handle the role is an honor.

Have a listen.

What is the purpose of a Captain in Baseball? I don’t remember Franco doing anything except bring out the lineup to the umps and wearing a C on his jersey.

  2. John Young

    The puropse is as follows:

A Captain is defined as the title given to the member of the team primarily responsible for strategy and teamwork while the game is in progress on the field. This role has been particularly important during situations in which coaches have been prevented by the rules from interacting with players on the field, or coaching from the sidelines while the game is in progress. Team captains may be given the responsibility of interacting with game officials regarding application and interpretation of the rules as well.

    As written at Shea Nation

I didn’t understand a reliever being a captain at all

Keith Hernandez was the best Captain the Mets ever had. David is not yet as experienced, but he plays with the same enthusiasm and love of the game as Keith did.
Whenever Willie thinks David is ready, I think he will name him the next Mets Captain.

Thanks John. I agree with Joan, that David isn’t quite the leader yet. I think that will happen naturally when LoDuca and Delgado are ex-Mets.

I heard Keith speak on this the other day and he said he didn’t do much as Captain.

As for the poll open it up so we can add our 2 cents.

I want to add Pedro or Heather.

Even tho Pedro is not every day he really is the only one that can motivate the team by his enthusiasm and therefore the only one who can wear it. Jose and David are too young and Beltran too quiet.

  7. John Young

If Lo Duca was younger and was going to stick around then I would have to give him the C, but he’s probably gone after the season so I would have to give Wright the C in a year or two.

    Hi JD;

Thanks for the suggestion but if I’m on board I read it all and it just gets the old juices flowing from my working days if you get my drift…. And then I do the smae blasting…. I’ll hang around tonite since I’m not at the game.
What a road trip. Saw the first 3 disasters in Philly. They have without a doubt the most obnoxious fan base in the country, far surpassing the Yankees or the Red Sox.
Then the 1st 2 in Atlanta and all 3 in Cincinatti. You probably saw me for the last day as there were maybe 500 people there. But I will say this. Both the Reds fans there during the series were very nice! As were the Braves fans. They don’t chop as much as they used to.
I think the key to the survival was Pedro’s arrival. They were so tight, and then they were calm Friday nite with him in the dugout and when Delgado popped that HR the weight of the world seemed to be off all of them. So I think without the C, Pedro is the real Captain, because he’s the real leader of this club. I wish I had been at Shea yesterday to be part of that great ovation when he left the game. That was true fandom and teamdom gelling as one…. Bringing him back was worth the risk of him not being ready…..Do you know who made that decision?

  9. Dan

When Wright has matured as a player more, I think then he’d be a great option. But as said by others above, he’s not ready. Considering the Mets don’t exactly pass out the C very often, give young Dave some time.

  10. Mr Blutarski

Delgado should be captain, he has the most experience. Wright kniows what to say in the press but on the field experience counts. Someone in the leage 3 years doesnt have enough time.

  11. Mike C.

Delgado? A guy who won’t even admit that he’s struggling at the plate due to lingering injury? A guy who we’re not even sure’ll be healthy enough to play next year or… ever again?

Someday, Wright. Not yet but eventually.

If I had to pick someone right now?

    I go Pedro Martinez.

His combination of energy and enthusiasm WITH wisdom and experience is exactly what the Mets need and have needed all year… I have no problem whatsoever with declaring him the leader of the team.

He’s the middle ground between the Randolph-Green-Glavine stoic quiet steady thing and the Henderson-Reyes-Milledge joyous enthusiasm thing… and hence kinda the heart and soul of the team.

  12. Dan

I don’t know if I buy a pitcher as a team captain. Granted, Franco was one, but still, it makes no sense.

  13. Mel

Good call Mr Blutarski. Anyone who really watches a game can see Delgado’s leadership on the infield. But he doesn’t need a C to lead. He already does.
And to the nasty one above, one shouldn’t admit publicly to injuries if one is playing. It only helps the opposition and bookies.

  14. SNK

Right now, it is Delgado. Wright is too young and it is Delgado I most want to go calm down a struggling pitcher on the mound (when Rick cant come out). Wright will be the team’s captain in a few years, but right now in my mind it is delgado.

If team captain is as John Young says, how could any pitcher be the captain? Has to be a player on the field, no?

  15. Theresa

I’m not of the opinion that a baseball team needs a captain, or even that it’s necessarily a good thing for the team.

  16. Ryan from Westport, Ct

The team CAPTAIN is the one who has the fire all the time, and while i like to think that there are many people who always carry the burning desire to win at all costs, no one carries it more than Crazy Eyes (Paulie). If i were to designate a captain, it would be Paulie if he were going to be here longer, but his lack of production spells him behind the plate somewhere else next year. In a few years, i think it will indeed be david wright but as many of you said, he is too young and needs a little more experience, this year’s playoffs will tell us whether we have a jersey worthy of a ‘C’

    lets go mets

  17. Dan Gurney

I don’t worry much about who the captain is, The Yankees won a whole bunch of World Series between 1939 and 1975 when they didn’t have a captain. They had DiMaggio, Mantle, Berra, Ruffing, Ford, Reynolds, etc. Not sure if naming Hernandez the captain in 1987 was the cause of the team’s downfall afterwards but it didn’t help. First Carter got jealous so he had to be co-captain. The team became complacent..no one was upset after getting upset in 1988. Kevin McReynolds thought duck hunting was as great as a world series and the co-captains didn’t correct him.

  18. Allen

I think the mets should name David Wright the team captain because David Wright has prove it!I know that there’s Carlos Beltran,Carlos Delgado,Jose Reyes and Pedro Martinez but they have not prove it yet like Carlos Beltran he only hit two homerun this season and Carlos Delgado only hit 3 Home run this season and Pedro Mrtinez is injured again Jose Reyes,Ryan Church and Johan Santana are good to be the team captain but David Wright is the best choice because every year he is getting better and this season he is hitting 7 homerun this season and he is a role model to the young kids who played baseball so the mets should name him the captain it doesnt matter if his to young to be captain we know he is to young but he is the greates third baseman that the mets have.
