Welcome back to Mets Chat Room.
The news doesn’t look encouraging for Carlos Delgado. It’s going to be more than the ten days. … Oliver Perez tries to get on track tonight. … Orlando Hernandez is still on for tomorrow.
These topics, plus the game, and whatever else is on your mind is welcome. Looking forward to talking with you throughout the game.

Let me get things going. The Mets are honoring Pedro Martinez as I type for his 3,000th career strikeout. Martinez is the 15th pitcher to reach the milestone. All are in the Hall of Fame.-JD
Good for the Mets!!!
Chipper Jones (strained right oblique) and Andruw Jones (flu symptoms) were scratched from the line-up.-JD
Nice to see Jose get a ground ball to the other side. A little sign? maybe?
In other words, Chipper doesn’t approve of tonight’s umpires…
-Stephan
How big of an influence is Pedro to Perez? We all know how good Perez can be with the K’s, and Martinez is…well, he’s Martinez. Am I making a parallel out of nothing here?
-SR
PS…Didn’t Pittsburgh try to make Ollie a finesse pitcher, a la Glavine?
Speaking of the 3,000 strikeouts, that was a great AFLAC question yesterday about Pedro being the third foreign-born and first Dominican pitcher to reach this milestone—who were the other two foreign-born pitchers?
That was a great question. I got Bert but forgot about Fergie….. Of course no Met fan should forget Fergie and the Cub staff that died with over use in 69. But he was a great pitcher…
hmm.. 7 straight balls hit to 2B..
makes you wish they had woodward playing there today
Stephan: Yeah, they did. It frustrated him. He said he’s better when he just goes after the hitters like he’s doing tonight.-JD
Awesome…. no implosion…..!!!!!
I think I’d take Ollie out now with his confidence sky high…...
Pardon my ignorance, but how does the hall of fame choose the team an inductee will be associated with? Where does Pedro stand in this regard? Mike Piazza? (I think it’s safe to say Glavine will be shown as a Brave)
-SR
Oh – I logged on in time to congratulate the MVP candidate, Mr. Wright. He’s certainly having a great year and there will be many more to come, I hope. You see him all the time John, has he changed since he became DAVID WRIGHT?
To Stephan: The Hall of Fame said a player will go in representing the team in which he carved out the bulk of his career numbers. Pedro would probably go in representing the Red Sox, as would Roger Clemens.
Glavine, of course, would go in as a Brave.
Mike Piazza is interesting because what he’s achieved has been roughly split between the Mets and Dodgers.-JD
Are they going to have Michael Kay give the award since he warned in winter of 2004 how Martinez would poison the clubhouse for rookie manager Willie Randolph? Just like in 1982 when Toto won a Grammy for best new artist they thank music critic Robert Hilburn of the LA Times who had blasted them repeatedly.
I’m not sure who in the HOF does the actual choosing. There is probably a board of directors, made up of local Cooperstown residents (some of whom have finished high school). Personally I think the absolute stupidest thing in baseball is the “Go in as a Brave/Yankee/Devil Ray” argument. Any plaque I ever seen has all the teams an inductee played for listed. Get rid of the hats if people like Fisk, Winfield, Boggs etc want to sell their services.
Wait: second stupidest thing..Don Zimmer in a baseball uniform is first. But he would look ridiculous in anything.
A note about Paul Lo Duca. Every Tuesday at 12:05PM Paul calls in to WFAN radio and has a ‘conversation’ with Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts. For those who have never heard them together, it’s like brothers having a ‘discussion’. Just thought I would mention it.
John – is the Hall willing to take in consideration players requests? Ie if Mike said “hey, I feel more met than dodger” or the whatnot?
I think the Hall is willing to listen if there is significant playing time on a team. I think if Piazza argued for a Dodger or Met, that would tip it. But no way if he asks a a Marlin. Sound like an implausible scenario? Possibly, but I guarantee if 15 months ago if you had asked people in the Formula 1 community about the chances of Juan Pablo Montoya going to NASCAR, they would have laughed themselves silly. Or Giants fans in 1948 about getting Leo Durocher from the Dodgers.
Well JD, I think Ollie is way ahead of Maine in the post season rotation sweepstakes. He does his best against the good teams. Especially the Bravos!
Carter wanted to go in as a Met but the Hall ignored him…. Thank you Wade Boggs for being a jerk…
Wade Boggs ruins everything.
this is why we can’t have nice things.
Steve Popper, Mets beat writer for the Bergen Record, came up with this gem. Wright’s 28 homers are the most ever by a Met with a homerless April.-JD
Mel: I would say you’re probably right. Perez looked pretty good tonight. He got some help in the sixth and threw a horrible pitch in the seventh, but overall was very good.-JD
Anybody notice how the run production has shrunk considerably since Carlos Delgado went down?? Zero vs the Reds, 11 (the only big one against Houston, then 3, 4 and 3 tonight…... Only the pitching has stepped up.
Mel: Good call on Delgado. He’s missed.-JD
Game’s ‘in the books’ – The magic number is 14.
Nice to see the magic number. Thanks Joan.
Did you guys notice that Alou has a 15-game hitting streak with that triple? By the way, how did he get a triple?
Another five-game win streak coming? Our best pitcher is on the mound tomorrow.
Not for nothing, but Cooperstown isn’t a hick town.
Oh, it’s a SMALL town but anyone who owns land there is filthy filthy rich from how much tourism drove up property values and so forth.
Has the best hospital in New York State outside of the NYC metro area, the best hotel in New York State outside of the NYC metro area, the best restaurant, etc.
Brandon – Alou hit a double into the RF corner it got away from the fielder and Alou was running all the way.
Since Willie is properly tight lipped about the post season.
I guess it is in no particular order:
Glavine, El Duque , Perez, Pedro. Everyone else cleans up or pitches in when they get in trouble. This season is a bittersweet experience for Johnny Maine. His season is not ending too well. I predict he comes back next year and gets at least 17 wins and finishes strong.
It’s strange how Maine leads the team in wins, with only 14, and yet is deservedly getting no love for the postseason rotation. Bittersweet, indeed. On a side note, since the Mets won’t be the first team to go into the playoffs without a five-game win streak, what is the lowest number of wins by the team pitching wins leader for a team making the playoffs? I guess the Mets don’t have a chance to break that or else we would have heard something earlier. I would guess it’s around 12.
19 more games – how many wins do you think the Mets will finish with? (82-61 now) I don’t think they’ll quite match last year’s total of 97; I’ll be conservative and say 94. They definitely do have a chance to reach 97. That will lock up NL home field if they do, because Arizona would have to go 16-2.
Ah, I forgot to change to my new handle on this app. Those “Brandon” posts above are mine.
From the clubhouse:
David Wright: ``We couldn’t have picked a better time for us to peak. We’re playing our best baseball of the year now.
Oliver Perez: Look out for this. He said his arm slot was higher, which added some zip to his fastball. Only two walks tonight, and he was usually ahead of the hitters. Perez said Pedro Martinez reminded him to keep his arm up during the game.
Jose Reyes: Beat out an infield hit and walked. He scored off both. The Mets are 19-6 when he scores multiple runs.-JD
Maine would make the most sense for a theoretical playoff bullpen anyway… even on his bad days, his first two innings are usually pretty good.
And of El Duque, Pedro, Perez, Maine and Glavine… Maine’s had the worst second half of the year.
Having the most wins isn’t really that meaningful when you consider that he got most of them by opening the season dominating strong and then tailing off hard in July and August.
I’d hope the dude would be happy to be a significant part of a team hanging strong in contention, not sad that he could end up the odd man out if they happen to make the playoffs.
Especially when you consider that two years ago, the BALTIMORE ORIOLES basically threw him away.
Didn’t mean to insult Cooperstown, the line about finishing high school is from the Bill James book on the Hall of Fame. I lived in and went to school in several towns in upstate New York so I consider jokes like that as laughing at myself and my family and friends. Having lived in places varying in population size from New York City to Dana, Indiana (700 people, home of WWII correspondent Ernie Pyle) I can attest that Tom Lehrer is right: Life is like a sewer..what you get out of it depends on what you put into it. Cooperstown has an opera in summertime..the Glimmerglass one. That alone says something about it. Haven’t been to the town since 1980..really should make a trip soon.
It would be nice to get SNY for other than the occasional MLB.TV Met game webcast. I would like to tune in to hear things like the Lo Duca daily blurb as Joan mentioned. Yesterday, they (MLB.TV) advertised that they were going to have Lo Duca on for an interview about Pedro etc, at 1pm, but the announcer (Stern) appears to be just another Yankee homer and the Lo D interview was on a good ways into the show. and to boot was a short 5 minutes long if that. Does anybody know if SNY has a pay service that those outside the Greater NY / NJ Metropolitan Area could subscribe to? Because between ESPN and guys like Stern thinking that A-Rod is the second coming, the Mets seem to take a solid back seat.
The Loduca interviews Joan referenced is on the Fan. You can get it from their web site.
