Mets Chat Room

Welcome back to Mets Chat Room.

The Astros are in. A very beatable team before the series with Atlanta and Philadelphia. You know where I am headed with this.

The Mets can all but put away the Braves and Phillies this week, but their position would be better if they don’t have a game or two sliced from their lead.

We get Mike Pelfrey tonight. If he strings four or five solid starts this month, would you be afraid to start him ahead of Oliver Perez or John Maine before the playoffs?

Check in throughout the night. Looking forward to hear what you have to say.

JK – Dmitri Young will be eligible because of all the troubles he had last year, self-inflicted or whatever, and initial expectations for him this season. Hamilton was coming back from numerous drug issues and was originally highly touted. As long as they weren’t suspended for steroids, whatever somebody is coming back from seems valid.

    Lets go Mets!!

  2. Mel

Hamilton was a never was. How can he be comeback player of the year. If a guy who never did anything (at least on the field) wins the award abolish it. If you reward players such as Young for coming back from criminal behavior then abolish the reward. Disgusting and illegal behavior should not be cause to earn a special reward. Being allowed to play is enough of a reward for these people.
But who cares… We need to win and that’s more important.

    Hi gang;
I’m just checking in for a little while tonite. When Donovan gets here I think we’ll be going out, so “our boys” better get some big ones in a hurry! We both had a long week and we need a break.

Hi Mr D: I’m pretty happy that David is playing tonight. I’m voting for PEDRO for this comeback award.

  4. JK

Spider: Yeah, I know Young is eligible. I just wouldn’t vote for him as his down year was his own doing. Should we reward people who have substance abuse problems and get into legal hot water? My previous point about a rookie is what Mel said—what is he coming back from? This is a major league award. So the player should have had some success in the majors, then fallen on hard times, and then rebounded. This is how the Baseball Almanac describes the award:

The award will recognize the players who have re-emerged on the baseball field during a given season.

Note “re-emerged” which means not a rookie. There is no stipulation either that the player had to play a full year. So I would still vote for Ankiel for Comeback player if not for the HGH issues.

The award by the way is voted on by folks at mlb.com and from MLB. One person in each league is chosen. Interestingly, the award was sponsored by Viagra in its first year. ; )

any news on when the mets will call up mighty joe?

  6. ed

Are the Braves that bad, because it’s only the second inning and Pelfrey looks like the 0-9 caliber guy again. after looking so good in Alt.

  7. BH

Reyes meant to do that, right? lol

  8. ed

Reyes and Beltran both look sloppy tonight and the Mets are getting no hit while Pelfrey looks very hittable again….

    Lets go guys wake up….

  9. ed

Pelfrey’s trying to pitch around guys instead of being aggressive like he did in Atl

  10. JessinMassapequaPark

Hi boys; Relax, we’ll catch up …..

  11. ed

mvp mvp Mvp MVp MVP MVP

  12. JessinMassapequaPark

Hi Boys; I told you we’d catch up… Aren’t you all glad Willie played David tonite?

  13. JessinMassapequaPark

    Jess knows her baseball!

  14. AnotherDan

Man, Keith Hernandez REALLY likes David Wright.

    Can’t say I blame him.

  15. ed

I’m making my one and only game of the season tomorrow
(with kids just too expensive to spend the money on. Last year I went to three games team went 0-3. One in Philly, Pitt. and Shea. Milledge high five game, Pedro shoulder injury in Philly 8 runs in the first, Maine cruising on the 4th July falls apart in the fifth for five runs….

    I’m Jinxed I need a little mojo

  16. Bryan

    JOHN
No matter what Pelfrey does the rest of the way, I think it is more of a gamble to pitch him in front of Maine and Perez during the post season. The way Perez pitched for us in the post season alone last year earns him a post season start. I am still do not convinced Pelfrey is ready to pitch at the major league level. He threw the ball great his last start but what about all the previous starts of the season…

  17. BH

Would love to hear more interviews with Swoboda, that was fun. He’s pretty well spoken, very honest, and has a sense of humor. [Love seeing that catch too, in this day and age we would see that for a week on ESPN if someone did that!]

Yeah I still don’t have much confidence in Pelfrey…don’t get me wrong, I think he could be great…but right now he still has no clue where that FB is going…he is a walking 3-2 count. I’m guessing starting pitchers don’t go to winter ball, right? He could use it.

By the way what’s with Pelfrey’s velocity at 90-91? He was mid-90s in ATL.

  18. dave

I just want the best 4 starters we have. Right now Ollie and John don’t have it.

    Jess- Nice thought, Pedro..

  19. JessinMassapequaPark

    Good nite boys;

Don’t worry Ed. “Our boys” won’t let you down tomorrow.

    Thanks Dave…...

If I don’t talk to everybody tomorrow or Sunday I’ll be back in about 10 days or 2 weeks. I’ll be doing something special to help me prepare for my career and I won’t have internet access. So keep on rooting and don’t get mad at “our boys” if they lose one or two.

  20. BH

    Omar: “I”m a homer”

    classic, love it

  21. Mets101

now whoever said green is a better defensive player than milledge look at that play.

  22. dave

Lastings is so frustrating. He makes a nice catch and then gets up and shakes the ball showing everyone he caught it rather than throwing it in to the infield. I thought he was gonna let the guy score.

  23. Dan

Omars time on the air was a bit too long

  24. ed

I took Milledge’s shake as showing he caught it, not showing off.

  25. BH

Yeah Lastings wasn’t showing off, he was indicating that he caught it on the fly…..the runner wans’t going or he would have come up throwing (he could see the play in front of him).

  26. dave

You throw the ball in. You do not give the ump a chance to change the score. Nice home run.

  27. Bob

Why is Willie going back to Sosa for inning #2?

  28. dave

    Endy’s back!

  29. Bob

For that matter, why is Wright still at 3rd, Castillo still at 2B, Reyes at SS, Beltran in CF and LoDuca behind the plate…

    9 run lead screams Collazo/Humber/Sele!!

  30. dave

Why not? you are up 9 and he was a starter. He is not Wagner.

  31. Bob

Because he doesn’t have to pitch a 2nd inning….9 run lead is for long/long men.

  32. Bob

And there is a 3rd run for the Stros….Like I said….no need for Sosa to go a 2nd inning tonight

  33. Craigelmer

Where is Ralph Kiner? Doesn’t her always get a few innings in the booth on Fridays?

  34. dave

Sosa will be on the post season roster. You are training him for that. You do not play the young guys just because. You can always put them in for 8 and 9.

With our starters we will need at least one guy to go 2.

  35. hollywoodjosh

its pretty sad to see all this bitching. I must be seeing the score backwards. I thought we were up by 8 not down by 8.
And can’t you lay off Milledge when he’s having his best day to date? Good O and good D, and he still gets blasted. What a fan base we have!

  36. Bob

    Yay! Gomez…and Wright goes out.

Way to throw on your thinking cap Willie

  37. hollywoodjosh

Well whiney boys, the phils lose again so our lead in a few minutes is back to what it was before the evil sweep. You all compain, I’m pretty happy!!!

  38. ed

    John,

Newhan almost single handedly won the Zephs first two games of their playoff series, tonight he’s nowhere to be found in the 8th of a tie game is he also on his way up…

  39. ed

    Gomez is so fast

  40. dave

Hollywood stop ur bitching. You whine about other ppl and then do it yourself.

  41. Spiderpig

Wow, I didn’t think Gomez would be back this soon. I wonder if there will be space for him in the postseason. You’ve gotta figure they’re gonna drop Sele from the bullpen, using the fifth starter there instead, opening up another bench spot. If Valentin or Easley were to somehow come back, one of them would get it because it would not be too effecicent to carry five only-OF guys, along with three others who can play there. With 11 pitchers and the eight starting position players, that leave six spots for Green, Conine, Chavez, Castro/DiFelice, Anderson, and Gotay. It’s probably gonna come down to a competition between Gomez, Gotay, and Conine for two spots. I would give the first edge to Gotay because he switch hits, then to Gomez because of his speed, unless Conine shows some hidden first base ability. Of course, this is all assuming that every regular starter now stays healthy.

Again, who went away so that Gomez could come back on the 40-man roster?

Looks like it was a good game for our offense, with Pelfrey pitching like the Bannister of early last season.

  42. Jeff

Spiderpig: Conine is going to be on the playoff roster if they make it to the playoffs. One, he’s got ability at 3B, 1B or OF and two, he’s experienced with two WS rings.

  43. Jeff

Spiderpig: You have Anderson Hernandez on the playoff roster? He can’t hit major league pitching….no way does he stay on the roster.
I don’t think that the Mets will carry 3 catchers and we’re not sure if Castro is even going to come back.
They will use four starters….I agree that Sele will probably not be on the playoff roster. But honestly, this is a bit premature….the Mets still need to clinch and with 22 games left to play and a 6 game lead….it’s too soon to talk post season.

  44. Spiderpig

Yes, I clearly have him on my roster. Wait, who’s our best pinch hitter? Maybe he’s named Anderson. I’m only carrying one cacther; do the math! DiFelice is there in case Castro is still injured. I dont think Conine has too much ability anymore anywhere except hitting, maybe not even there. After the past couple weeks have played out, it is definitely time to talk playoff roster. I was talking about it two weeks ago at least, too. The magic number is only 17.

  45. Jeff

SpiderPig: My mistake. When i saw Anderson…I thought of Anderson Hernandez….Not Marlon Anderson..of course M.Anderson will be on that roster.
We disagree with regards to Conine….he’s still got ability…

  46. ed

spiderpig: the way the playoff schedule is you can do a three man rotation on regular rest….

    I see the bench as: Anderson(L)/Conine®/Green(L)/Gotay (SH)/ Chavez(L)/ Castro-DiFelice®

they may keep Gomez as a base runner and drop a pitcher with two starters in the pen, or keep Newhan if he looks like the player he was in the Zephs playoffs

I think Conine is way up the depth chart as far players getting cut- he’s a known commodity especially in th playoffs

  47. Spiderpig

I can’t see them going with a three man rotation, even if the off days allow it. They would have to go back to a four-man if they reach the second round anyway.

From prior experience with this GM/manager tandem, it is probably most likely that Conine will make it, along with Mota & Schoeneweis, but hopefullynot Sele, since he’s not even being used now.

  48. holloywoodjosh

hey dave i don’t whine up 11-3. bitch on the bad nites,

  49. BigEd

No way can you start Pelfrey over Maine & Perez who have sweat and bled for us all season. Though I believe Maine makes the better reliever. He has better control than Perez. Playoff rotation: Glavine, Hernandez, Martinez, Perez. Pen: Maine, Heilman, Wagner, Feliciano, Pelfrey, Schoenweis, Mota.
