Welcome back to Mets Chat Room.
After Philly, who would have thought the Mets would be on the verge of a sweep in Atlanta. Tom Glavine could give it to them. Glavine wouldn’t acknowledge this could be his last game here, saying, “I’m still entertaining the idea of playing next year.’’
Pedro Martinez makes his first start in almost a year tomorrow. … Orlando Hernandez is hobbling. … Carlos Delgado is getting hot.
There’s all that, and Mets-Braves we can talk about. Talk with you during the game.

DirecTV rules and is even better with TiVo, because the MLB channels are set for six hours, not three, accounting for possible rain delays or extra innings.
I had Dish before and it sucks.
The Mets coverage in CT is one of the prime examples of how bad the blackout and related TV coverage rules have gotten. I can watch the Mets in Milford where I live, or in Colebrook (on the border with Mass), but my parents in West Hartford (in between Colebrook and Milford) can’t. Examples like this exist all over the country and it just boggles the mind.
The blackout rules are beyond absurd and Joan’s predicament is evidence of this fact. Selig has said that he’s “looking into it” but we’ll see. There are parts of Oregon that are blacked out from seeing Giants and A’s telecasts because that is seen as the market for this teams. Parts of Nevada are blacked out of the telecasts of FIVE different teams.

What a nervous 9th inning. Wagner better get this right soon, or we’ll be looking at Heilman and Feliciano.
Joan – y’all can’t change together to a different cable system? MLB has the screwiest blackout rules. Yahoo has been writing up about it a few times over the course of this season, especially when it looked like extra innings would only be carried on DirecTV. Also, I think the Mets swept the Braves last year or the year prior, but maybe not in Atlanta.
BH –
It’s a mess, but thankfully WFAN is giving me coverage of the Mets and they – Tom and Howie and sometimes Ed – do a great job.
With all the vanity channels, sports fans are getting less coverage of their teams than they used to before cable. It’s just a money grab, I guess.
Correction: the Mets swept the Braves in Atlanta last June.
Good Lord.
Great win. Billy is just an adventure and a half lately but he got the job done. Kind of have no idea why Green was in there or stayed in there for the last at-bat or was still in there defensively in the ninth.
But a great win nonetheless.
If the Mets could’ve even taken two of those five games, one against LA and four against Philly, the whole thing’d be wrapped up but…
The Rest Of The Season starts tomorrow and the Mets have a small-but-not-exactly-slim lead.
Lets go Mets!
Okay…
Gregg’s gotta get three outs before he gives up two runs…
Spiderpig – Cox is the only cable available in this area. Thanks for asking. I had no idea that blackouts were so prevalent all over the country. You would think that MLB would want their fans to see any games they asked for. Otherwise, I believe their fan base will eventually suffer – lots of little Mets fans here in Cheshire can’t see their team.
Mets also swept the Braves in Atlanta in July 2006.
Gil, I got it wrong twice. It was last July 2006.
That’s OK guys, we’ll all remember this one 9/2/07. Lots of good posts/conversation/information today. The ‘Pedro Era’ continues tomorrow—I can’t wait. See you then.
The Marlins’ Kevin Gregg has two outs in the bottom of the 9th and the Phillies have the tying runs on, with Carlos Ruiz up.
Dammit. It’s now 7-6. Utley is up with the tying run on third, two outs.
Great.
Gregg walks Utley to load the bases for Jimmy Rollins.
3-2 count on Rollins.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gregg gets Rollins on a fly to center.
The home plate ump helped us out, too, as he called a 2-0 pitch a strike that was as high as Rollins’s neck.
Mets lead over the Phillies is now at 4.
A great Sunday and if the Yankees lose it will be even better.
Joan, that stinks. And I suppose you can’t switch to satellite either? I had known about the Cox problem, along with Comcast, in Connecticut from the SNY Wikipedia article.
FROM THE CLUBHOUSE
THE COLOR: Several players watched the Marlins beat the Phillies. It’s always fun to watch the players watch games on TV. They cuss and moan like everybody else.
WAGNER: He said he wanted to get out there again after the disaster in Philly.
WRIGHT ON THE SERIES: ``I’m extremely proud of what we accomplished. We just came off the low point of our season and turned it around into one of our high points.’’
GLAVINE ON THE POSSIBILITY OF THE LAST TIME HERE: ``If it is the last time you don’t want it to be on a negative note. You want it to be positive.’’-JD
John,
Thanks for the club house report!
In response to Wright’s quote:
Met fans are extremely proud of how you have stepped up.
He is the future captain of this team! Nice series boys!
Looking forward to Pedro tomorrow!
Not really related to this game, but as far as Willie as a manager, I think the most demonstrative example of Willie’s management style was sticking LoDuca #2 last season decisively and for the entire season. People wondered why he would put a slow-footed catcher hitting second. But the job LoDuca did helping Reyes produce and grow into the player he is now speaks volumes about the decision. It was something Beltran or Wright could not have done, and I think it was a huge turning point in Reyes’s evolution. Willie really pushed an intelligent, if not somewhat counter-intuitive, button there.
I would love to just once see Willie squeeze. Not at this point in this season so much, but maybe early on in next season. The fact is, its a play these guys obviously aren’t rehersing much and aren’t used to executing. It wouldn’t make sense in a big spot in an important game (which they all are now). But I don’t see why Willie would never do it, especially with this year’s relatively power-deficient club, most notably from Delgado and the lack of XBH from Reyes.
I had no problem letting Glavine swing today. He handles the bat pretty well. Usually he just tries to slap at the ball, but he did an excellent job getting some loft and distance on it. Heck, in some parks, 300-340 foot outs become homers (wouldn’t that have been ironic, Glavine hits the Mets first GS of the year).
I’d prefer to see Willie surprise a team with a squeeze in a spot where it could lead to a crazy inning. Maybe with someone like Reyes, Endy, or Castillo batting, where it becomes absolute chaos when that ball dies in no-mans land.
Hi boys and Joan:
I see the boys came thru again and David hit a big one!!!!
I’m glad to see you boys turn that terrible first post into an intelligent conversation about Willie. That was very good going. I’m proud to be with you!
We didn’t see the game but since Pedro is gonna pitch tomorrow I guess we’ll be watching. He’s my BF Donovan’s # 1 man you know….
Hi Joan; I’m sorry you can’t watch the Mets. Can you watch the Giants? I’d be none to happy if I couldn’t see the boys in Blue.
Its baseball 101 in here at times.
Wow. We swept the Braves. Amazing how this game turns and we are 4 up on the Phils.
Our Manager – I think last year counts. We have a lot of expensive talented players, but Willie still needs to motivate and keep them playing the right way. For the most part we play the right way which is something our manager has instilled in this team. We have not played the right way for many years.
Wagner – What is up with him? I am getting worried. I hope he gets back on track by October.
Are we ok now? I know I feel better than a few days ago.
Dave
Oh yes. I forgot.
Thanks Pedro!
Somewhere betwen Atlanta and Cincy. This Pedro thing screwed us up. We were gonna see all the games in Atlanta and get to Cincy Tues but with Pedro pitching we skipped today but tomorrow’s a day game so we got to move it.
To the guy who asked how do I find the tinme. when you get old like me they’ll pay you not to work anymore (retirement plan) and you can do what you want…. We want to go see the Mets on the road. This is my first in Cincy tho….
By the way to all the Willie bashers; Everywhere you go they hate their manager. They even hate Cox and he’s been there almost 20 years…...We’re watching this game on ESpn in the hotel and there’s a nitemare in the dugout.. ART HOWE… Please OMAR, don’t fire Willie, ART HOWE might be back. 65-97 or something. Don’t fire Willie!!!!
Sloppy, I had guessed either you were retired or hadn’t gone back to school from the summer yet, as a teacher or student. Good commitment from you to cheer the Mets on in many different places!
Pedro…he can’t not be jovial.
Haha nice, is there a section to follow the RSS feed
