Welcome back to Mets Chat Room.

A lot on the table so far and first pitch is still over a half-hour away. There’s the news on Pedro. He could go Monday in Cincinnati. … Mike Pelfrey is the choice over Phil Humber tomorrow. … Orlando Hernandez has a bum foot and could miss a start.

And, of course, there’s always how the Mets are playing and the game against the Braves. Talk with you throughout the game.

i have an odd feeling pelfrey will pitch well tomorrow. dont know if the offense will show up or anything but i got a good feeling about pelfrey. helll i could be wrong hes 0-7 but i think he’ll be orite

  2. ed

Any reason why Pelf over Humber, it appears Humber was pitching better is it simply experience

  3. jab

it’s gut check time. i think if this series didn’t follow the phillies series people wouldn’t be as worked up, but just the fact it is atlanta people can get that pit in the stomach feeling about a sweep against us.
my concern is other than wright there is no player i can point to that i have confidence will pick up his game for this series. none of the pitchers inspire me, reyes got completely outplayed by rollins in philly and never showed a spark, and the two Carlos’s need to pick now as the time to help carry this team.
can they do it? i hope so. i don’t like reading the comments from people saying that other than the braves and the phillies the mets have an easy september schedule. 1) no game is easy for the mets and 2) if you can’t beat the good teams now what can you do if you get to the playoffs?

  4. Mark

Pelfrey’s last few starts really haven’t been than bad. In fact, when you account for the fact that he’s only been in pro ball for about a year and a half, and that his last few outings have been spot starts, they were actually pretty reasonable.

Personally, I’m still as high as Pelf as I was on Millege at the end of last season: That’s to say my perception of him isn’t exactly what I hoped it would be right now, but I still think he’s got time to reach his potential. Its easy to be impatient with prospects, especially #1s like Milledge and Pelfrey. But sometimes its the only way.

What really bugs me are comments like “well, that’s it for Pelfrey becoming a top of the rotation pitcher, most guys destined to be aces show it right away.” I mean, even if you just look at recent Cy Young winners you can disprove a claim like that (Webb, Santana, Carpenter).

  5. Justin

I think a middle relief pitcher is more important then this 1 start, and the Mets felt Humber would be a better middle relief pitcher then Pelfrey, so they put Humber in the pen.

  6. Mike C.

I would like to hire Kanye West to record a video of himself saying:

    “Willie Randolph hates Lastings.”

Because, like, there’s no rational explanation at this point.

Pelfrey is still pretty goddamned early in his development. I don’t like using him here but it’s better than Brian Lawrence, I s’pose.

When Pelfrey puts it all together, he’ll most likely be very good. Whether that’s tomorrow, April or next April, I’ve no idea, of course.

An All-Star? Who the hell knows. But good, anyway.

  7. Gil

One bad pre-game note: The liquor store closest to my house was closed.

  8. Mark

Agreed Mike C., I’m not saying he’ll be any of those guys I mentioned, but he’s got the tools.

One thing is I’d like to see him fill out a little more. Most guys who have those good power-sinkers seem to have larger frames. Pelfrey is still kind of scrawny. But the height is a nice place to start with that. He just has to bulk up a little bit now. He still has plllllenty of time, although it would be nice if he could turn in a good start or two down the stretch, esp if El Duque does indeed need a start or two off.

  9. JessinMassapequaPark

Hi guys: I’m gonna put my explanation to Mr Delcos over here ‘cause you’re all probably on this post now…
    Hi Mr Delcos:

We’ll go to the late movie cause one of the girls is running late, and we’ll watch a little bit.

The boys or girls that count mean they are the ones doing the work. In school the teachers are the boys and girls that count because they can flunk you. In court, the jury are the boys and girls that count because they decide, In baseball, the guys on the field are the boys that count because we are just watchers and can’t make them win. I guess the umps are really the boys that count huh? I’m sorry if you thought I was degrading some people, that’s not what I meant to do. You’re right, everyone counts, but it really counts when your doing your job, you know what I mean?? If you guys don’t like the term I’ll call them our boys or something. Would that be better??

You guys are ok, even when you go nuts!!!

Sarah’s gonna watch with me. She knows nothing about baseball, that’s less than me if you can believe that!!!!!!!

  10. Gil

There shouldn’t even be a question of which start Pedro should make on Monday – Cincinnati or Brooklyn.
    None at all.
That’s a no-brainer if there ever was one.

  11. Sarah at Jess' house

Jess says you guys are like her Dad and go nuts every night. Do you guys do the same for the Giants or Jets?? I go crazy when the Jets lose, which is a lot most of the years.

  12. JessinMassapequaPark

This Pedro stuff sounds pretty exciting. Too bad they are away from Shea.
Do you think Pedro will help “our boys” forget how bad they did in Philly?

  13. Chucky

Mike C wrote: I would like to hire Kanye West to record a video of himself saying:

    “Willie Randolph hates Lastings.

Because, like, there’s no rational explanation at this point.

Actually Chavez is 6-15 against Hudson with one triple.(.400 BA) Lastings is 0-2 against him and is usually owned by tough righties. It was the right move.

  14. Gil

Sarah: I don’t even get into the NFL until after the World Series and when I do, I’m a Dallas Cowboys fan.
But my favorite football team actually plays a different kind of football: Australian Rules. My team is the Fremantle Dockers – a perennial underdog expansion team that has long beecn second fiddle to another team in nearby Perth.
Hmmmm…see the attraction? I mean what baseball team does that sound like, to you?

  15. JessinMassapequaPark

We’re only gonna watch til 8 cause Sarah wants to see Syracuse’s football game before we go to the movies. She has a cousin up there.

I hope everybody behaves tonight. You know who I’m talking about don’t you?

Hi Jeff; I saw that note you wrote on the other posting about forgetting about everything that happened this week. Good for you!! “Our boys” need positive vibes even if they don’t know about your note.

  16. Gil

Are the rest of you as sick as I am of those damn “I Love You,” “I Love You,” “I Love You” Mereceds Benz TV commercials on Mets telecasts?

  17. Mike C.

How is Lastings ever going to have a shot at fulfilling his potential, if there’s always an excuse to not let him go out there and TRY?

You’ve already put the guy’s talents and weaknesses into a box at twenty-two? Dude’s gonna have to learn to hit Tim Hudson (or dudes a lot like him) eventually, yeah?

Endy’s a superb fourth-outfielder, definitely. But what are you saying to the team about how inexperienced players are handled if management is always FINDING an excuse to not play a guy like Milledge?

I don’t wanna see Milledge put into a box as a back-up and never allowed to develop into something more with this team… underperform out of frustration and confusion and then end up dumped off to another team where the dude shines.

I don’t wanna see Milledge get Heathbelled, man.

  18. JessinMassapequaPark

Hi Gil; Sarah’s on the phone. I think you guys should talk football tonight because “our boys” aren’t doing so good so far. At least the football games haven’t counted yet. Sarah likes the Jets and we like the Big Blue Giants. I have to find a new favorite since Tiki hung it up. Maybe I’ll like this Jacobs # 27. Think he’ll do the job ok? He sure is a big guy. Sarah doesn’t have a BF right now so she’s not too happy.

My BF says Johnny boy is doing bad because he doesn’t throw his high fastball much anymore. He says his low pitches don’t move as much or something. Do you boys agree with him?

  19. Gil

Paul LoDuca actually threw out a baserunner?

  20. Justin

    WAAAAAAAAAAAA

LO DUCA CAN’T THROW OUT RUNNERS GET MIKE ” I CANT HIT ” DIFELICE IN THE GAME

  21. Seth (Rochester)

Does John or anyone know anything about the Mets making a trade today? I am not sure what time the waiver trade deadline is over today.

  22. Justin

idk what your talking about lo duca does a pretty good job at throwing out runners, if you expected him to throw out Werth yesterday then your crazy..

BTW Maine has all 3 pitches working early and the Braves hitters have no idea whats coming

  23. Chucky

Mike C…...I agree with your general sentiments, but I just don’t think a series this late in the season against the Braves after a five game losing streak and with the Phils only two games back is anytime to go with less than the best lineup you can possibly put on the field against one of the best pitchers in the game.

  24. Mel

Mike C; Your note is the very essence of why your boy Milledge isn’t playing. August and September are for doing and not learning.

Jess; I don’t know if Jacobs will be very good or not, but the Giants need him to be if they want to have a big year. I don’t watch pre-season so I don’t know if he’s even the starter.

  25. JK

Mike C: The heat of a pennant race is not the time for Lastings to learn on the job. Let him do it in the first half of the season. His defense is sometimes shaky and he struggles badly against quality righthanders. I’d rather see Endy or Green in RF sometimes, depending on the matchup.

No one put Lastings in a box. He’s had his chances. He’ll get more at the right time. It would send a negative message to the rest of the team if Willie didn’t put out the best lineup every night for the rest of the season.

  26. Gil

Justin: Maine has faced only three hitters so far.
With his throwing out Kelly Johnson, LoDuca has now thrown out 20 of 57 base stealers (35%).

  27. Justin

again you can’t blame the catcher, 35% isn’t horrible the Mets have Glavine,Perez, and El Duque that are very easy to run on.. and Brian Lawrence wasn’t easy either..

  28. JK

That would be great if Lo Duca threw out 35% of runners but he’s only thrown out 20 of 77 this year. That’s just 26%. Jesus Flores, btw, has thrown out 38% this year.

I hope they find someone next year who has a stronger arm than Lo Duca.

  29. Gil

Another stupid commercial on Mets TV: The damn “DUH” Hyundai spot. But the worst has to be the totally annoying Gulf commerical with that song sung me what sounds like a pre-teen girl band.

  30. Art Vandelay

    lo duca can’t hit anymore

  31. JessinMassapequaPark

Well its been fun boys, but my other GF called and she found a BD for Sarah so we’re going out. I’ll check to see how you did watching “our boys”.
My BF’s coming home tomorrow so we’ll see you around but probably not tomorrow. We’ll be watching Pedro for sure. Mr Delcos, The other day you said people proposed on the TV in Philly. Do they do that at Shea Stadium ever? Maybe they’d let me propose to my BF when we’re ready.

    GN everyone…. Lets Go Mets

If Joan in Cheshire stops by tell her Jess said Hi.

  32. Gil

JK: You sure you’re reading the LoDuca stat right?
The mlb.com page I looked up says 56 stolen bases, 19 caught. Seventy-seven would be the total of attempts.
    Am I wrong?

  33. John Delcos

Hi Guys … glad to see the party is going strong.

-So far, no word on any trade. Don’t count on it.

-It’s Pelfrey because of his experience, such that it is. Humber has only thrown two innings and I guess the fear was if he started that’s as far as he’d go tomorrow.

-The Mets expect Milledge to be a good player, but there are no guarantees. Except for one. If he doesn’t learn to hit the curve and breaking balls he’ll never see another fastball.

-Maine’s problem the this month has been his location and inability to close an inning. He’s falling behind in the count and has to come in with his fastball. That’s what the hitters are sitting on.

-Tell Sarah not to worry about not having a BF right now. That always happens when you’re not looking for it. And, thanks for the explanation, Jess.

  34. Gil

By the way, the Phillies are now up 6-0.
And something was garbled when you read “song sung me.”
I thought I typed that the stupid Gulf song is done by a group that sounds to me like an uber-annoying pre-teen girl band.

  35. Mel

Don’t you have remote Gil That ends the commercial prolems.

BF GF BD GN the things that swirl around in a “Young Girl’s Mind” that I have no clue about…. Jess, have fun if you’re still with us.

  36. Gil

Once thr the lineup for Hudson and we’ve already killed seven worms.

  37. JK

Philip Hughes is struggling ;) (sorry, Joan). He’s given up 3 runs to Tampa and thrown 57 pitches in 3 innings.

Gil: the caught stealing percentage is the percentage of runners nabbed out of the total number of attempts. If you look at espn.com under the player’s profile you will find that stat.

JD: I don’t get what you mean by the 2 innings comment. That was what Humber threw last year in relief for the Mets. But he was a starter in New Orleans and the start before last made it to the ninth inning with a no-hitter!

  38. Gil

Thanks, Mel. I just got off my lazy ass and grabbed the remote! The mute button shall be employed from here on in, between innings.

  39. Gil

JK: Thanks. Math was never my stong suit. That was a real brain cramp there. It’s the same way batting averages are computed….

On another note, Braves fans are dumb as hell for booing John Maine after hitting Escobar. Do they really think Maine is trying to plunk a guy in a scoreless game?

  40. Gil

“Family Guy” rules, by the way.

  41. Chucky

Maine’s looking like his old self so far tonight. Hopefully, I’m not speaking too soon.

  42. Mel

To the guy who wanted to know about a Met rade:

How about an X-Met. Trax was traded to the Cubs today.

  43. Gil

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

  44. Jim A

Definitely something to be said for guys-that-own-other-guys. Go Delgado!

  45. Mel

Thank goodness! We got some positive feedback for poor Carlos!! He needs to go back to the 5 spot. He won’t get the chance to heat up with LoDuca behind him.

  46. John Delcos

To JK: The two innings is MLB experience.-JD

  47. BH

What is with this ump, that low sinker is a strike for Hudson but has been a ball every time for Maine. Does baseball have it’s own Donaghy?

  48. Mel

I’m watching on MLB and they had a great trivia question….
Who was the only player to hit HRs against 2 300 game winners in the same game.

(Both aparently had 300 already when he did it).

  49. Justin

great double play, in the Phillies series every little thing went the Phillies way, after that deflection and Delgado’s homerun only the 6th? Hudson has given up all year maybe the Mets will get that kind of luck in this series.. maybe Pedro brought another Midget

But seriously Pedro is huge for this club even if he isn’t vintage Pedro he can take every one’s mind off of things, and cheer them up. and he can also play pitching coach which is why Maine is prob throwing more sliders, and changeups tonight.

  50. frank

    this is the chatroom?

  51. Mel

Gil: I don’t know if the Brave fans are dumb, but they have a great environment in their park. I was there in 96 before the Olympics in their old place and it was a very friendly place. There was no cursing of visitor fans, the Brave chant was fun and made you feel like you were in a college football game.

  52. frank

this is a wierd chatroom lol

  53. John Delcos

Well, look who just woke up.-JD

  54. Gil

    Jo-SE, Jo-se-Jose,Jo-se, Jo-SE, Jo-SE!

  55. frank

i think i got banned from the metsblog chat cuz i said that the phillies wod probally win the division so im trying this one lol

  56. Mel

If it takes a Pedro to relax a team, go Pedro!!!!
If it takes a HR to get Reyes going, I’m all for it as well!!

If anyody cares the anwser is our very own Ricky Henderson off of Phil Niekro and Steve Carlton in a game in April 1987.

  57. Dan Gurney

Just when you think this team is going to collapse, they right the ship and start to play like they should. Maybe Mota will have a 1-2-3 inning.

  58. frank

nice we are looking good today we gotta at least win 2 out of 3

  59. BH

Well I’ll say this, the Gary Cohen jinx seems to work against Mets opponents as well as the Mets themselves. He opened the dialogue on Hudson by mentioning that he’d only given up 5 homers all year.

I still say we won’t throw a no-no with him calling the game!

  60. frank

Dan: Lets not get too crazy here lol

  61. Mel

hey frank, this place isn’t wierd, its just not as big and horrible as your old site.

  62. Justin

your going to feel extra tired when you haven’t had a big hit in a while, because your not running on adrenaline, but with that homerun from Reyes I expect the energizer bunny to come out as if he got 2 days off.

  63. Joan in Cheshire

JK – Hughes hasn’t been the same pitcher after he was hurt last Spring – he’s too cautious – anyway he is out of the game, replaced by Chris Britton and the Yankees are behind 5-1 in the 5th.

I see the Pedro karma has kicked in and Reyes has woken up.

  64. frank

nah i juss mean that its wierd having to refresh the chat nd stuff cuz im used to a different way

  65. frank

Maine is looking really good today nd this game is going FASTTT wow not even 1hr 30 min so far

  66. JK

JD: I know that’s major league experience. But that was in relief. Humber has never started a game for the Mets. So why the fear that he would only last a few innings? That doesn’t make sense given his most recent work in New Orleans. I thought that’s what you were saying was the concern of the Mets.

  67. Mel

Looks like the same horrible umps. Different names, same bad calls.

  68. Mel

JK, I know spring training is irrelevant but I remember Gary and company commenting about how lost and nervous he looked starting down there. If he was nervous when it didn’t count, I can understand the concern about him making his first start in Atlanta.

  69. Joan in Cheshire

BH – Get off Gary Cohen’s back, no Mets announcer has ever called a no-no in the history of the franchise.

  70. Gil

Dan: We haven’t righted the ship yet.
This game is far from over.

  71. JK

Joan: It’s like last year with Bannister. After he came back from rehab he wasn’t sharp at all. That might have factored into his getting traded, but it shouldn’t have.

I agree with you about the Pedro karma. It’s good to see him back.

  72. NYM

john maine just cant let it get away.

  73. NYM

based loaded 0 outs for chipper. here we go again

  74. John Delcos

NYM: No, but it sure looks as if he’s trying to.-JD

  75. JK

Mel: If I recall correctly, Humber was trying too hard in spring training to make the team. But Glavine took him aside and told him to relax, that he probably wouldn’t make it regardless right out of spring training, but had a good chance to be a September callup. At any rate, Humber has pitched in the college world series so I think he can handle pressure. Though I can see where Pelfrey having more ML experience might be a better choice for tomorrow since it will be a Fox telecast.

Damn, what’s with Maine and 5th – 6ht innings? He always seems to fall apart then.

  76. ed

THIS FEELS LIKE A SICK JOKE

  77. BH

Is this fatigue or mental b/c it’s happening way too often.

  78. BH

Despite being overworked I almost want to say that the Mets need to have someone up whenever Maine hits the 6th inning now.

  79. ed

    tHIS UMP IS GETTING TOUGH

  80. Gil

The 2-0 pitch to McCann looked like a strike to me.

  81. Gil

Johnny Maine just rose to the occasion.

  82. ed

wow …. coming of age type of inning

  83. John Delcos

Pretty impressive jam Maine worked his way out of. That’s something he hasn’t been able to do in a month.-JD

  84. Dan Gurney

    Gil,

You are right..never count your chickens before they hatch, especially with this bullpen. But Maine did well in that situation. Cautiously optimistic.

  85. frank

    BIGGG KKKK

  86. Joan in Cheshire

Well, that’s less damage than it could have been – I think Maine did just fine.

  87. BH

Wow, we finally got the call Hudson has been getting all night!

Good job by Maine. Finally fought back before disaster struck. Glad I didn’t post half the stuff spewing from my mouth about him 2 minutes ago lol.

  88. Jim A

Stats don’t lie. Maine’s numbers aren’t much worse than Hudson’s. Sure recent trends are worth looking at too, but this late in the season, you only have numbers like Maine’s if you know how to pitch. John is going to be fine, and is going to be a big part of the Mets staff for years to come.

  89. Mel

We hope its coming of age.

Joan, Met announcers called no-no’s. They just were by the bad guys. Remember that horrible Father’s Day in 64 when Bunning pithched the perfect one and Chris Short followed and almost pitched his own?

Hudson left with 67 pitches. He’s pitching on 3 days rest against the Phils Tuesday.

  90. Mel

The bats sure didn’t give Maine a chance to catch his breath.

  91. Gil

Have I mentioned one of my new students is a dead ringer for Johnny Maine?
He’s from Chicago and he’s a Cubs fan, though.

  92. Joan in Cheshire

    Mel

Sorry I wasn’t clear about the announcers – of course they called them, but never for the Mets.

Bunning made a nice career change – The Senate is a good post MLB job.

  93. John Delcos

Maine is getting a lot of pop-ups tonight. That one by Andruw Jones. The inning before he got Chipper and Teixeira. That means his fastball is moving. It’s not flattening out.-JD

  94. John Delcos

Mel is right about one thing. Another few runs wouldn’t hurt. Especially with the Mets’ pen.-JD

  95. Gil

JD’s right. We need a grand slam-proof lead by the top of the 9th to win this thing tonight.

  96. ed

    I’d love few insurance runs

  97. frank

Great pen time in bottom of inning….. we need at least a couple of runs in my opinion

  98. ed

this guy was awful light him up

  99. John Delcos

Maine is done for the night. Great job. You can close your eyes for the next two innings if you’d like to avoid seeing the bullpen. I’ll tell you what happens.-JD

  100. frank

JD thats a great idea…. if the pen manages to lose this game i will be really upset to say the leastt….

  101. NYM

id go heilman 8th sosa for the close (shutters)

  102. Gil

Wonder if Jose’s finally out of his funk now…back-to-back ropes.

  103. Joan in Cheshire

Gil – Is your student a 6’4” right handed pitcher as well?

  104. Gil

Not quite 6’4, but fairly close. His facial features are like Johnny’s – same eyes and same facial expressions.

  105. Joan in Cheshire

John – Wasn’t Sosa up before? If it’s the other four letter pitcher, I don’t want to know.

  106. John Delcos

Billy Wagner threw 45 pitches yesterday. I spoke with him before the game and he said he could go tonight. Aaron Heilman in for the eighth-JD

  107. Gil

I’m definitely not feelin’ stranding Reyes on third with one out against the Braves’ weak link in their ‘pen.

  108. Mel

I was just teasing you Joan in Cheshire!!

That was a bad top of the 8th.

Can’t anyone have a low pitch count?

  109. ed

i thought reyes should have risked it on the check swing bunt even before the bobble, rather have him called out instead of stranded

  110. Gil

Crucial not to allow any runs in this inning – if we get them 1-2-3, it’d be Chipper, Teixeria and McCann in the bottom of the ninth.

  111. Gil

    Oops. Teixeira, not Teixeria.

  112. Joan in Cheshire

    John –

I have never believed in Billy Wagner – to me he is the reincarnation of Mitch ‘Wild Thing’ Williams.

  113. frank

do u think that billy will pitch the 9th?>?

  114. Joan in Cheshire

It’s all but over at the Stadium, bottom of the 8th, Yankees 1, Tampa Bay 8 with no sign of the rally squirrel as yet.

  115. Gil

Frank: You’re assuming – though I can’t blame you – we won’t score any runs in the 9th.

  116. frank

well lets say we dont score ne runs shod we put wags in?

  117. JessatDonovan's

    Hi boys and Joan;

Well they got me. It was a surprise. My BF Donovan’s back. I’m showing him this blog site. He wants me to stick with it so he can have some peace when he watches “our boys”.

Don’t worry about Sarah JD. She just dumped her last BF, so she’s kinda down now if you know what I mean, but she’s cute and smart so she’ll have no problems when she’s ready for another.

I see the boys are doing good now so I better go so I don’t jinx them like yesterday. See you all soon.

  118. Mike C.

Back from my long-ass Los Angeles commute…

The other half of my point is that Endy was never exactly gonna set the world on fire from the dish… and Green’s days of being an effective hitter in anything other than fits and spurts are long behind him.

The point that you don’t train guys in a pennant run doesn’t hold any water when the young guy is playing as-well-or-better than the “proven veterans” that you’re holding him back with.

Willie’s constructing the line-up as though age and experience magically translate to performance, despite all rational evidence pointing to the notion that…

Y’know. Only performance translates to performance.

Put the best guy on the field, not the guy who was best five years ago.

  119. Gil

Uh, Frank, you been drinkin’ there, pal? No punctuation, some misspelled words…

  120. Mel

Brave announcers saying Hamels reinjured himself in bullpen session and has been scratched from Sunday’s game and won’t attempt to throw for at least 6 days.

  121. JK

I don’t think Milledge is playing as well or better than the proven veterans right now. And games are too crucial now to give him all the time in the world to work out of his funk.

They just showed Wagner warming up. I think it’s a bad idea to use him for the 9th.

  122. Mel

Mike C You really need to start watching with eyes wide open. No hit; no field; no play. Sounds like Willie got it right…..

  123. Jim A

How clutch is Marlon Anderson?! Inexplicable.

  124. ed

Somebody said it the other day, some guys just belong in a certain uni

  125. Gil

    Marlon Anderson RULES!
Why did Omar EVER let him go in favor of Julio Franco after ‘05?

  126. John Delcos

Maybe it might be a good idea to give Marlon Anderson three or four at-bats in a game from time to time?-JD

  127. JK

Marlon Anderson is special. Omar should give him a 2-year extension right after this game!

  128. Matt

marlon anderson is the best pinch hitter alive, my goodness haha.

  129. Mel

Ah, now we can have anyone relieve, maybe…..

Omar please don’t let Marlon leave again.

  130. ed

I want credit I said it and I’ll say it again Delgado will have a huge sept. if Im wrong ill eat crow but if Im right there are alot more nay sayers that will be

  131. Jeff H.

The Mets tried to resign Marlon to a one-year deal but the Nationals gave him two and he grabbed it.

  132. John Delcos

It’s 7-1. Maybe it’s safe enough to put Mota in the game. Nah, guess not. It’s Schoeneweis.-JD

  133. Chucky

Yeah…....so Omar signed Julio Franco to two years instead. Not one of Omar’s finest moments.

  134. John Delcos

For those interested in stats, Anderson has seven hits in his last 10 pinch-hit appearances with 11 RBI.-JD

  135. Mel

Remember who carried the Dodgers to the post-season last September. MARLON ANDERSON, not any of the well publicized kiddy corp. I agree with JD. He needs ABs, but its nice having a threat off the bench.

  136. NYM

gotta buy me a marlon anderson jersey

  137. Mel

    ed;

I hope you’re right about Delgado, because if your not, I think we are done.

    A happy recap. Finally !!!!

  138. Gil

Jeff H.: Precisely why the Mets should’ve bettered the Nats offer after the ‘05 season.

  139. Joan in Cheshire

    John –

It is never safe enough for Mota. I think Scott will be fine.

Yes, he will – put it in the books!!

Wanna discuss the Switch?? – JC

  140. ed

Nice everything went right all the bounces

  141. John Delcos

In honor of Jess, time for me to go downstairs and talk to ``the boys.’’-JD

  142. Gil

    L’chaim, Scott Schoeneweis! L’chaim!

  143. Mel

Carlos Delgado = Biggest hit of the year for the Mets.

Pedro returns = Team plays like a bunch of winners

  144. Jeff

Great game all the way around. Maine had a nice start, Delgado blasted one, Reyes got a couple of hits and the bullpen held.

    Coolness!

  145. Mel

SCOTT BAKER perfect thru 8 for the Twinkies!

  146. ed

“A defining moment” – Ron Darling

6th inning bases loaded, no outs, heart of the order up, one run allowed on a wild pitch, two pop-ups and a strike out

  147. Mike C.

Nah, I like Anderson juuuuust fine off the bench.

Dude is just too good in that role.

    And… a pretty crappy fielder.

Chavez and Castillo a combined 0-7. Just sayin’.

Man, though, I’ll tells ya. A win is a good feeling.

Almost forgot what it felt like.

  148. Mel

    Lead off walk,,,

  149. JR

Nice crisp game for the Mets. The Braves announcers called it “a very big loss for the Braves”, most of whom looked pretty dejected in the dugout.

  150. Mel

Poor Scott Baker; no no-no tonight.

  151. Jeff

And of course….Marlin Anderson’s pinch hit bases clearing double. Late inning add on runs…..Good sign..Now let’s get them tomorrow.

  152. Jeff

    Marlon….

  153. Gil

Wouldn’t it be something if tonight started a month-long hot streak for Delgado?

  154. Mel

Thank you Mike C for your continued negativity on a nite when the team had to win and did.

We didn’t replace Anderson with Franco. We actually replaced Anderson with Valentin who was supposed to become the lefty PH. If Anderson stays, he would have had the shot at the 2B job that Valentin got when Kaz and A-Hern failed.

  155. Jeff

JK: I agree completely. You don’t let a rookie work out the kinks in the midst of a pennant race. I hope Randolph understands this….

  156. ed

Pelfrey- Humber will be a one two punch tom. i’d be surprised if tom. willie had a long hook

  157. Jeff

Gil: Ironically Schoeneweis is not Jewish. His father is but he wasn’t raised as such.

  158. Mel

Jeff: Willie gets it?? Of course, why has Milledge’s time decreased for a while. He hasn’t figured it out and its too late to play now. I expect he’ll still get some starts to keep him alert, but next year’s his time if he’s still with us. If Omar gets a bat for the OF, I would think Gomez beats out Milledge. He has more upside, more speed, better D, better arm, at least as much power, and he seemed to make adjustments, something Milledge hasn’t shown us yet.

  159. John Delcos

    From a happy clubhouse:

MAINE: ``The biggest difference is tonight I made a pitch when I needed to.’’ Maine said he threw fastballs up to get Chipper and Teixeira.

WRIGHT: ``Even though we didn’t play as well as we are capable of against Philadelphia, we came out here expecting to win.’’

DELGADO: (On what he told Maine when he came to the mound in the sixth): ``I told him to just take it easy, that he’s been in control the whole game.’’

Delgado also hit the 427th homer of his career to move into sole possession of 38th place, four behind Cal Ripken.

A last thought: No, it wouldn’t have been the end of the world had the Mets lost, but with Pelfrey going tomorrow the Mets needed to change their karma.-JD

  160. John Delcos

Oh, I almost forgot this gem from Marlon Anderson: ``Pinch-hitting is like my World Series every night. It keeps me excited and it keeps me in the game.’’-JD

  161. Mel

Looks like Gomez has some spunk. From tonite’s St Lucie box….Gomez was hit by pitch in 6th and…

Ejections St. Lucie Mets Carlos Gomez ejected by HP umpire Kellen Levy. (6th); Daytona Cubs pitcher Brad Clipp ejected by HP umpire Kellen Levy. (6th).

  162. Gil

Jeff: Wow. I thought Schoeneweis was Jewish. I’d read about him, Shawn Green and David Newhan making a point of visiting the Holocaust Museum – which I still need to see – in DC on a road trip. Newhan identifies himself as a “Messianic Jew,” but I thought Schoeneweis is part of the faith.
No matter what his faith or culture, though, I have to admit he’s pitching a lot better in the second half.

  163. LoveEmHateEm

Schoeneweis is a “Road Machine” as his road numbers are oppo-zoppo from his Shea record.

  164. Dan Gurney

Would we have beaten the Cardinals last year if they had resigned Marlon Anderson? I didn’t give his leaving at the time much thought but perhaps I should have. Minaya too.

  165. Jeff

Gil: From Inside Pitch, July 2007, as quoted from the Canadian Jewish News, “My mom’s Jewish. I’m not. My birth certificate says I’m Jewish, but I don’t practice and my kids won’t be raised that way.”

    Newhan….lol for MANY reasons!

  166. Jeff

Gil: My favorite Footy team: Brisbane Lions! They lost to Geelong on Saturday. They’re not doing so well this year…in 10th place after 22 weeks. They’ve lost three out of their last four matches with the one they didn’t lost being a draw.
Wow, how the mighty have fallen.

  167. dave

    That was a great game.

Someone in the booth said Marlon is the best pinch hitter in the game.

Maine – for those who say it is a growing up moment I disagree. He did that last year in the post season. This however is a pivotal game for him as he seems to have gotten out of that funk of his.

Sho – Wow. Out new closer. LOL

Jess re Gints – 500 team at best no RB no D.

Milledge – As many have said here. He can’t hit the changeup right now. His D sucks. Regardless of who is nominally better at the plate Endy blows everyone out the door with his D. No one on this team can touch him in the OF. Part of what made us good last year was stellar D. Endy was a major part of that throughout the season and in the post season. Oh yeah. Milledge also has a few things to learn about running the bases. Don’t get me wrong I hope he does well, but Endy is preferable to him for now.

Pedro – Is it really this easy to get a win? Just have Pedro back?

  168. dave

    Oh yeah.

Delgado was clutch. Gave a nice little talk to Maine as he did last year.

  169. Mel

Pelfrey, Humber officially recalled… Mulvey to New Orleans, Collazo added to 40 man roster… Pedro, Duaner, Gomez and Padilla on 60 man DL. I guess they’ll move Valentin or Easley to 60 Day DL on Monday to make room for Pedro. Each 60 day guy gives Omar post season roster flexibility….
