The call at the end of the game stands out. As well it should, because with so many bad calls during the series they got this one right.
But, that’s not why they lost. They lost because:
-”Oliver Perez”:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6945 gave up a homer to Pat Burrell on a 0-and-2 pitch. Perez also walked pitcher Jamie Moyer, who scored what proved to be the winning run. Forget the 10 strikeouts. What does it matter when you do that?
-The offense continued to fizzle. As David Wright said the night before: “Two runs isn’t going to cut it.’’
-Jose Reyes was picked off twice.
When you play like that, you put yourself in position to lose the game with what happened in the ninth.
If you have any leftover frustration, vent it here. I’ll be back later with the line-ups.

I agree 100%—anyone who focuses all their frustration with the last play (all, not some… some is definitely warranted) is short-sighted. Two runs isn’t going to cut it indeed. That’s where the blame lays for the last two games.
Disappointing series for the Mets, obviously. We win today though, we still are up 4 on the Phils, and 5.5 on the Braves, with a 2nd chance to put away an NL East team in the Braves.
JD-is Pedro staying up with the Mets in Atlanta the whole series?
The other question that I have which was eloquently expressed by Matt Cerrone on his blog is, “where is Ruben Gotay, who is faster and a better hitter at this point…there’s no lock that gotay gets a hit, but he’s far more capable of beating out a double play, which is the major concern in that spot…to me,”
I agree and for me it comes back to another poor decision by Randolph. His theme seems to be MY VETERANS vs. THE BABYS OR YOUNGER GUYS/ROOKIES.
“Green most likely would have been safe,”
I know Keith and Gary may have said this
but there’s no way Green would have been safe.
What the 2nd base angle on the replay…Green is nowhere in site and Iguchi was in perfect position to turn 2. The hardest out to make in that slow roller is the out at second.
Wait, so Oliver Perez (6 IP, 3 ER, 10 K in a hitter’s haven of a ballpark) is a reason the Mets lost? Sorry, not seeing it.
It was a slowly hit ball and Rollins had to reach twice to pull it out of his glove. I can understand the desire to use Gotay more but the fading Green did do his job. Anderson first was the hero and the goat. Reyes got picked off twice!!! The offense got 2 runs off 45 year old fading Jamie Moyer who got the leadoff walk from Oliver Perez and scored the winning run.
Burrell is also tied for the lead with homeruns against the Mets with 39 with a lot less at bats than Barry Bonds and Chipper Jones. How many of these have come on an 0-2 count?
I agree about the interference call. However, Joe West was quoted as saying that Anderson “could not and did not touch 2nd base”, which is not true. Anderson did touch 2nd base. Look at the replay. Why hasn’t anyone said anything about this?
Howard: I believe if you go back and re-read what JD posted you’ll see a list of things that hurt the Mets, Oliver’s home run to Burrell on an two strike count, walking Moyer, The Mets offense not doing the job, Reyes being picked off TWICE etc…it was a litany of reasons…I don’t think JD was blaming it all on Perez.
As I said in my notebook from last night, Reyes is stealing too much.
Teams know he’s going to go eventually, and continue to throw over, and eventually pick him off. He needs to hit the bench for a day or two, and refocus himself to hitting and getting on base.
The blame these past two games rest solely on the lack of offense. I don’t see how anything else is to blame. Two runs off of Jamie Moyer is riddiculous. As far as Green goes, I agree with him PH in that situation. He gives you a better chance of a flyball, and a better chance IMO of hitting Myers nasty breaking stuff than Gotay does. And I do think the double clutch by Rollins would have made Green safe at 1b.
Again it was the offense. Ollie gave up 3 runs and yes he had his issues esp early but he got the job done. If Marlon didn’t reach out and interfere it would be a tie ball game.
Having Oliver as your number 1 reason the Mets showsyour pre disposition against him. Bottom line is he pitched good enough to win. 3 runs against the Phils in the band box, regardless of how they came about is fine. Scoring 6 runs in 3 games there sucks…
