Saturday’s starter

Naturally, the first question to Willie Randolph was about Saturday’s starter:
1) He said Mike Pelfrey and Phil Humber are options from the minor leagues. Pelfrey is pitching tonight, but GM Omar Minaya said he’ll be kept to a pitch count of around 40 to keep him in the mix. Dave Williams and Jason Vargas aren’t being considered.
2) Randolph said it would not be Pedro Martinez.
3) Randolph also said Jorge Sosa will stay in the bullpen.

comon just pitch humber, we’ve all seen what Pelfrey can do and right now in his development it isn’t much…
Humber has been on fire lately, and pelfrey is dealing with fatigue.
I vote for Humber too….Pelfrey would be a good one or two inning bullpen guy.
No argument from here.-JD
The possibility of Humber making his major league debut as a starter against the Braves on a FOX national telecast is exciting. I’m all for it. Please, Omar. Just do it!
Humber and Pelfrey are definitely the only two options Saturday, yeah.
Pedro isn’t ready… I don’t wanna see Vargas or Williams start again this year though maybe I’d give Williams some mop-up relief in September… and Sosa is worth more in the pen, the pen as it is right now.
The elegant solution would be to call them both up, start Humber and have Pelfrey ready to come in as long-relief if Humber implodes.
Sorta like one of those spring-training split-start deals.
To Mike C.: I asked Omar about splitting the day and he didn’t rule it out. He didn’t exactly jump at it, either.-JD
Why not Aaron Sele?
Could he be any worse than Pelfrey, Williams, Vargas, Humber or Bozo the Clown?
I am for either of those two guys starting. I know Pelfrey hasn’t done well this year, but I really liked what I saw from him his last couple of starts. I like him more as a power pitcher than a finesse pitcher thats for sure. Regardless, no way better to officially become a Met, than to beat the Braves!
WOW….Burgos is (as we speak)currently under the knife for Tommy John surgery. This from Kevin B. at SNY on the Mets’ pregame show.
He’s done for another whole year too…wouldn’t you think? It does take a long time to recuperate from TJ surgery.
