Mets in the Morning
-
- August
- 28
No news is good news on Pedro Martinez. He threw 88 pitches last night, which is a sign he’s getting stronger. He’s around 90 on the radar.
Bullpen coach Guy Conti says Martinez’s change-up is better than the pitcher thinks it is. “Pedro is being Pedro,” he said.
He’ll throw a bullpen Thursday, after which the Mets will decide the next step.
NOTEBOOK
-Endy Chavez will be activated today. He will spot all three outfield positions.
-Willie Randolph said Brian Lawrence is still on for Saturday. I’d rather see Phil Humber because I know what Lawrence looks like.

I bet Endy starts tonight in RF. ;-)
It seems like they’re scared to bring up Humber.
He’s obviously a better pitcher than the 84 MPH Lawrence, but I feel they don’t want to bring him up too early.
It might be nice to test Humber. He will have to face the majors soon enuf and it would be good to let them show him what he needs to fix.
It’s also tough to throw Humber into the fire. I would still do it though. He can’t be any worse than Lawrence.
Steve: I have little faith in Randolph’s decision making and would be shocked to find Chavez in RF tonight. Randolph is as stubborn as he is short-sighted. He said that he wants to use Chavez off the bench and not as a regular starter in RF. Right now you have Green who hasn’t been hitting CONSISTENTLY well since he came back from the DL and Milledge who is inconsistent at the plate and in the field.
Wow….Randolph is still considering using Lawrence against the Braves.
I know this shouldn’t surprise me. Randolph sees things that no one else sees.
Did you folks notice that Randolph didn’t have Jacket call the bullpen to have some one warming up until Lawrence was in big trouble in the fifth.
Willie is just not the right guy to manage in the big leagues. He’s a much better coach.
I would disagree, Jeff. Willie said as of now Lawrence is his Saturday starter because Omar has not made any roster moves yet. When he does then Willie will talk about it. But he’s not going to announce it before it happens. And if it doesn’t happen? Then maybe you should question Omar. After all, he can make roster moves at any time but Willie can’t. I’m sure Willie would love to have the power to call up and DFA or option players at will. But he doesn’t. He’s not the GM.
I don’t have a problem with Willie not having someone warming up at the start of the 5th because his pen is overworked. Maybe it’s more important to see if he can get 1 more inning out of Lawrence than risk someone else coming down with a “dead” arm.
JK, Good solid points….. plus the Phillies had the return of their leader adrenalin flowing, the same as the Mets will have the day Pedro shows up.
To complain abaout a manager not having his pen up at the atart of the 5th is an unfair complaint. Managers don’t ever have someone warming up to start the 5th.
To complain when he who is penciled in to start Saturday is unfair as you well demonstrate.
And the one thing Willie isn’t its short sighted. That’s why he has, from the first game, tried to stretch his starters as much as possible. That’s why every bench player loves hm for making them feel part of the team, etc etc etc…
To complain about Endy not starting is unfair 6 hours before game time, and if he doesn’t, what is there to complain about. Endy showed he isn’t an everyday player when Alou went down.
