Go for the throat

Nothing gets clinched this week, but for all practical purposes the Mets can put away both the Phillies and Braves.
Championship teams put away their opponents, they do not let them hang around.
The Mets have a good lead in the NL East, but not so good they can’t be caught.

JD, the Mets have flaws. But the team is not getting caught. The Braves and the Phillies just don’t have the talent to make up these kinds of defecits. All the Mets need to do is split and try to take two of three from the Braves. As long as the Mets don’t get swept by the Phills, it’s over.
JD: I’d have to agree with Steve. I would like to see the Mets get two of three from the Braves and do no worse than a split with Philadelphia.
The schedule and the lead favors the Mets—they have their destiny in their own hands.
Tonight’s game is the one game I’m nervous about being that we’re throwing B. Lawrence in a park that’s just a bit bigger than Williamsport. LOL
Steve and Jeff: I don’t think they’ll get caught, but that they could. The Phillies swept the Mets at Shea, suppose they do it again. If so, you don’t think the division is then up for grabs?-JD
“All” they have to do is take 2 of 3 from Atlanta, in Atlanta? Sure, piece of cake. The Mets are 4-8 against Atlanta this year! If they can take two of three in Atlanta, it would be a major, major accomplishment.
I agree with Delcos. The Mets need to put their division rivals away this week. Anything less than 5-2 for the week will be a bad result. They’re going in with a 6-game lead over Philly, they need to go out with 8 or 9.
Rattle: I never said ‘ALL’ and I don’t think it’s a piece of cake. Just what I would like to see them do.
JD: Well I do agree that anything is possible and their lead, though a nice margin, is erasable should the Mets completely fall apart. I hope and believe that a complete meltdown is not in the cards.
One thing is for sure: the upcoming trip to Phil and Atl is the Mets chance to send that proverbial message. We’ll see what they’re really made of, no?
first things first:
JD the term is : Go for the Jugular. ;-p
secondly: The mets just need to play smarter. The talent is there , the desire is there… they just need to shake the cobwebs out of their heads realize they are in first but need to keep playing has if they NEED to make it to first.
Thats my 3 cents..
Lets go mets go..
JD: I had posted that “As long as the Mets don’t get swept by the Phills, it’s over.” I really don’t see it happening. Not to mention, the Mets are 9 and 5 at Citizen’s Bank over the past two years.
To Jeff: Agreed. We learn about the boys this week.-JD
I don’t know that we’ll learn anything if they go 3-4 this week. If the Mets play .500 the rest of the way—with a schedule filled with second-division teams—then the Phils and Braves will have to play .667 ball to catch them, a real impossibility considering that the two teams have games against each other and aren’t all that good to begin with.
This week is far more important for the Phils and Braves than it is for the Mets. Yet, both teams already seem to be at a disadvantage from the match-ups: They will be hoping to unseat the Mets with the likes of JD Durbin, Kyle Lohse, Lance Cormier and Buddy Carlyle.
As much as I’d like to see the Mets challenged, I don’t see it coming from Buddy Carlyle, Lance Cormier and Jo-Jo Reyes.
I’m sometimes critical of Minaya… but I must say, at this trade deadline, he really made the right move by not making any major moves.
We could make a list of terrible players that they didn’t trade for and many fans and press wanted them to trade for and… man, is it a cavalcade of suck.
Even the guys who were good before blew up since!
Jermaine Dye…
Sammy Sosa…
Adam Dunn…
Chad Cordero…
Jose Contreras…
Eric Gagne…
Octavio Dotel…
Nearly the entire roster of the Houston Astros…
Crap, crap, crap aaaaand crap.
Sometimes the best move is no big move. The Angels know it and it seems that the Mets are starting to know it too.
JD: is Chavez going to play tonight? is he off the DL? I havent checked the box scores or anything my weekends are busy with NY ren faire and when I get home I just want to shower eat and sleep. Plus I had a meeting with a client today and now I am tired again ;-p
Thanx
Mike C.? why is sammy sosa the corked batter on the list? why would we want him ?
Also:
As long as the Mets don’t implode in the next seven games, they’re in good shape.
If they rip out six wins, they basically lock up the division… if they drop five or six, everyone’s back in the hunt…
But as long as they can win more than they lose, I think they’re solid.
Four wins would come out to taking three from Philly and dropping two to the Braves, which is probably how it’ll sift out.
JD is right. Time to put the hammer down.
splits.. two of three.. bada beep, bada boop, bada bee… nonsense.
one at a time and it starts tonight by backing up lawrence who will certainly get lit up. offense and bullpen must pick up lawrence.
This sums it up:

Hi John –
What I saw last night scares me. Mets were missing all the ‘little’ things – were they that much afraid of David Wells? We’ve all seen him for years, but last night was the first time I saw him run out a bunt. I guess ‘training’ on the golf course and surfing with your kids prepares you for the ‘bigs’.
John Maine looked exhausted and confused at times – does he need to skip a turn?
Meanwhile on the ‘hottie’ tour, Lorena Ochoa won her 3rd straight tournament, and, at Saratoga Streetsmart won the Travers with his Louisiana jockey chirping to him all the way down the stretch. Bill Parcells has a home in Saratoga and looked very happy at the results of the ‘Summer Derby’.
After seeing an ESPN baseball game for the first time in months (usually blacked out here) I wonder how anyone can watch them or listen to them – noise and graphics do not a baseball game make. I finally muted the TV and went with Tom and Howie.
John – two questions – as we turn toward the end of the season, what needs to be addressed by the whole team? And, what is the real story with Pedro?
Will Pedro Martinez pitch in Binghamton following his next start?
Lotsa people wanted Sammy and to demote Lastings for him.
I have no damned idea why either but I heard a lot of Mets fans begging for that idiotic move.
Steve, most reports have said Chavez is coming up tomorrow, in place of Brian Lawrence who’ll be released following tonight’s game… leaving one of the 40-Man Call-Ups to cover the last start between here and (hopefully) Pedro.
It’s the logical way to handle the roster logjam, really.
well if last year is any indication. I think willie and Omar know exactly how to juggle the roster. it was such a big difference from the years under steve phillips. I mean to actually have players come out of the ether and not pay an arm leg head and a good player .. it was refreshing and oh yeah. I come to expect it every time now ;-]
Postseason roster:
P- El Duque, Glavine, Martinez, Perez, Maine, Sosa, Shoenweis, Sosa, Feliciano, Heilman, Wagner
C- LoDuca, Castro
IF- Delgado, Castillo, Reyes, Wright, Gotay
OF- Alou, Beltran, Milledge, Green
Bench- Anderson, Conine, Chavez
I think that would be the playoff roster if it started today. Not too shabby. Is there anyone else missing? I know the Met decisions would come if Easley or Gomez can make it back.
OOPS…I added Sosa twice. That leaves one pitcher spot to choose between Sele/Lawrence/Waiver wire p/u.
I’ll just use an example, from say, LAST YEAR, when the two championship teams ended up SUCKING at the end of the year. The Tigers lost the division to the Twins, went to the World Series anyway. The Cards backed their way in with a horrible record, almost losing the division, and WON THE WORLD SERIES. All this, “championship teams” do this is crap. It’s complete and utter crap. There is no definition of what a championship team does because every year its different, and thats what is great about baseball.
Steve C,
Funny link.
Mike C,
Who wanted to get Slamming Sammy and Demote Lastings?
I had proposed Sammy at one point when we had 1 legit OF. Lastings had done well since coming up. I never heard people slamming him for being at one time the only potent bat in the lineup.
