Mets Chat Room

August
26

Welcome back to Mets Chat Room with a lot on the table tonight.

John Maine needs to turn it around for several reasons, the least of which is not knowing what to expect from Pedro Martinez when he comes back. … Anybody concerned with Billy Wagner?

With Philly and Atlanta this week they have a chance to put things away. And, of course, there’s always the game. Wondering the over/under on Joe Morgan rips will be.

Talk with you later.

Re: Wagner. No, I’m not concerned. If he was in pain and they couldn’t pinpoint why then I would be worried. He says it’s dead arm and he seems comfortable that it’s nothing serious to worry about and happens to him once a year.

SNY made another change in their anchor line-up. They have a new guy reading the sports for their 6pm show. They let go of another announcer (who’s name escapes me).

  2. Mike C.

If Wagner says he just needs a few nights off to deal with dead-arm, I’ll take it at face value.

Delgado and the back-end of the bullpen are still the big concerns right now, I reckon.

Well, that and how many time Morgan will get confused and think that Lastings is Strawberry.

  3. JohnM

Not really worried about Wagner, yet.

    Morgan over/under is 11.

  4. NCMets

I am not concerned. Wagner has probably gone through this many times before and bounced back accordingly. At least he and Willie bcan manage this correctly instead of being hard headed and ignoring it.

  5. LetsGoMetsGo

Joe Morgan is a true gentleman of the game. He may make mistakes but I think so does the rest of the world. Ralph Kiner led the world in mistakes and was and is still a fine person to listen too. Unlike a lot of network announcers Morgan announces with no bias to or against either team.

  6. Jeff

I’m not saying that because Joe Morgan makes mistakes that he’s not a nice person. But, if a network is using someone to provide analysis, that person needs to know what he is talking about. For example, in the Sunday night broadcast when the Mets played the Cubs, Morgan remarked after Castillo had trouble with a pop-up, that ‘that he’s not used to playing in Wrigley because he’s been away from the national league for a long time.
Fact: Castillo played for a season and a half with Minnesota before being traded to NY.
Fact: Castillo played TEN years for the Marlins who played many games in Chicago including the NLCS they won against the Cubs to put them in the WS against the Yankees.
He makes more and they’re too much to count. I just think he needs to prepare more.
Or maybe heed the quote, “A wise fool is a quiet fool.”
Yes, unlike FOX announcers and some other ESPN guys, he doesn’t root but he also doesn’t seem to KNOW what he is talking about.
But I do agree with you that he’s probably a nice guy—never met him, so I can’t be completely sure…LOL

  7. Franco

WHAT??!! Joe Morgan is one of the most biased guys out there… jsut ask Yankee fans, he hates them… he is absolutely terrible… and Ralph Kiney is 30 years older then him. he gets a pass

  8. LetsGoMetsGo

    Franco:
Did you here Kiner in 1962, 1972, 1982??? I doubt it, because he made more miatakes in 62then in 92 or 02. It was one of the things that made him a fan fave. He wasn’t into himself. And the fact that Yanee fans hate Morgan is proof of his lack of bias. They want everyone to be a Steinbrenner lackey like the NO crew is.

Wow, Jeff, Morgan screwed uo on Castillo. Man, I think the world is collapsing witn itself. Please heed the words you wrote!!

Is there anything you guys don’t have a problem with? Maybe JD can make a poll of that…...

  9. Jeff

LGMG…you’re testy tonight…Sunshine on my shoulders, makes me happy…etc…
    ROFL…..
And Morgan’s mistakes are many. I don’t keep track, there’s website for that….ROFL
Again, my opinion. You just CHILL out….ah. that’s nice now.

  10. Mike C.

The problem with Morgan is that he… has no idea what the hell he’s talking about, basically.

He comes off as though he does no research, does no preparation whatsoever and kind of just says whatever he decides it true at any given moment and…

Assumes that it’s correct, just because he was a really really good baseball player 500 years ago.

And, really, some of the smartest baseball minds of all time never played a professional game and some of the greatest baseball players of all time are completely clueless about analyzing the game from the outside looking in.

Morgan has no idea what he’s talking about the current players or the current game and coasts off the fact that some people think that since he was a great player he must know what he’s talking about.

    And he doesn’t at all.

  11. Jeff

Here, here, Mike C. I completely agree.

  12. Dan Gurney

I only worry about Wagner in October and I always have the mute button on for Morgan.

  13. LetsGoMetsGo

Hwy guys, you’re bitching @ an announcer and I’m testy?? Put on the FAN and listen to Howie… He’s a gentleman as well. Joe Morgan knows a poor fielding 2nd baseman Mike C, somethiong you cannot see.

  14. LetsGoMetsGo

Well guys, have fun, I’m gonna listen to the only fair minded team on network baseball coverage, open up a 9 and release Sloppy from his shackles if he comes over.

  15. Jeff

LGMG: Have you checked out Metsblog? The people who post are great about being nasty and rude to other bloggers. Just a thought.
FYI. Listening to the radio and watching a TV game is difficult as the pictures are faster than the words.

  16. Franco

well put Mike C… Morgan knows nothing about the players today. He does love reyes… and LGMG, you are right, i was not born back then.. I am only 29

  17. LetsGoMetsGo

Hi Jeff. I won’t see you on Metsblog. I just go there for info. You can fight there. I was just defending Morgan and you brought up the quote that I just returned your way.
And you do have my sympathies for the difficulty in listening and watching at the same time. Go soundless and announce yourself then you’ll be happy for sure. You’re welcome for the advice in advance.

  18. John Delcos

For those who asked, Ramon Castro is working out in PSL. He’s not playing in any games, yet.-JD

  19. BH

Sandy Alomar, Sr. strikes again. I really hope he retires after this year, he has been horrible all year.

  20. Mike

Milledge makes a horrible base running mistake. This guy is no 5-tool player at all. He is a 3 tool player and i’m not even sure of that. He can hit for average and has some power. He is an awful baserunner and probably won’t ever steal more than 10-15 a year. He is also an average outfielder. Now I see why people in the Mets Organization see Gomez with more upside than Milledge. Trade Milledge in the offseason to Oakland.

  21. BH

Mike that was 100% Sandy’s fault.

  22. Mike

Doesn’t matter, I still think he is out at 3rd if he tries to go back. He reminds me too much of Jay Payton or Rondell White two so called 5 tool players that were either injuried or never adjusted.

  23. JohnM

    Mike:
He was waved in and then held up, so he had to stop.

  24. BH

He was waving Lastings in and then stopped him way too late, the entire play was Sandy’s fault….but based on your comments you clearly have issues with him that blind you to the truth. Funny, I thought everyone like that was a Yankees fan.

  25. Spiderpig

Wellm, Morgan just called Marlon Anderson by the name of Marlon Byrd.

Jeff – Two things: if you can remember about the SNY switch, let us know, as I am interested. I just went back to college so won’t be able to watch SNY as regularly. Also, the words are faster than the pictures when listening to radio and watching TV, especially a national broadcast.

  26. Mike

Joe Morgan is not too bright, he must be thinking of Barry Bonds still since he likes to call people by the last name starting of B.

  27. Spiderpig

Claerly neither of the announcers know the story behind how Ricky became a “full-time” coach with the Mets, but I can’t really fault them for that; it was much more of a locally known thing.

  28. Mike C.

    It’s not that Morgan isn’t intelligent…

He seems to have above-average smarts for an aging jock… it seems that he just doesn’t CARE to learn or memorize the details.

  29. Spiderpig

I guess Willie saying that he move Beltran to 4th because he “wanted his speed 1-2-3” means he realized that Beltran tends to not put his speed to use by stealing bases very often.

  30. BH

Not his fault, but Jeff Conine doesn’t seem to have much range at first. Tough on Maine to have him and Gotay both on the same side of the infield at the same time.

  31. Spiderpig

I can’t believe the old man with the bunt single then winding up to score. Tough luck on the bloop. Does anyone not think that Wells will eventually hit someone in retaliation for Kent? He is probably afraid they will throw him out without a warning, especially if he hits a Met in the head by accident when aiming for the back or something.

  32. Spiderpig

DiFelice does it again! If Kemp stayed standing though, it would have hit him in the back.

  33. BH

John Maine rises to the challenge about as well as Bob Dole rises without his Viagra.

  34. JL

Might be a good idea to give some Maine some extra rest in september, they obviously can’t do it now with no days off for a while, but once Pedro is back and they have an off day it would be beneficial

  35. John Delcos

To BH: Assuming Pedro Martinez has no setbacks, I would have to say Maine is the one dropped from the playoff rotation as of now.-JD

  36. Justin

Yeh, Maine was overrated in last postseason anyways. he was going like 4.2 IP 2 ER

  37. Justin

Yeh, Maine was overrated in last postseason anyways. he was going like 4.2 IP 2 ER

  38. John Delcos

To JL: You make a good point. He hasn’t been worked like this before. Only twice has he worked more than 100 innings in a season, the last time 128 1/3 in 2005.-JD

  39. Justin

    I miss Luis Castillo..

Really you see the difference at 2B offensivley and much more importantly defensivley when he’s not playing.

  40. Spiderpig

    More miscues:

When Morgan was talking about how many teams there were in the wild card race, he mentioned how it might be hard to win that, so they would have an easier time chasing the Padres. I guess he meant Arizona, talking about the NL West.

Miller called the new stadium Citi Park.

I guess that was the issue with Mota – the short stride. Pedro knows what’s what. That’s the issue with ESPN: they make some really good insight by making the effort to get inside information, but they can’t keep their facts straight some times, and it’s not just these two. ESPN also has the tendency to not show replays when I really want them to.

  41. John Delcos

When I think about Maine tonight, does it really matter that three of the runs he gave up were unearned? No, because it was the same problem with him. He didn’t make the pitch when he needed, and that’s the difference between winning and losing.-JD

  42. ahunt10

anyone catch that morgan said we go delgado from texas

  43. John Delcos

Anybody keeping track of the mistakes?-JD

  44. Spiderpig

Morgan corrected himself on the Texas thing; that’s alright. But he made it seem like Delgado was a free agent when he came to the Mets, rather than a trade.

All the mistakes I’ve heard have been posted. :-P

  45. John Delcos

Tough pitch that got Wright. That might have been their best chance to get back into it.-JD

  46. JL

Could it be? Pedro watching on TV in florida was able to spot the flaw that is holding Mota back from being the guy with the 0.50 ERA last september? Rigggghhht.

  47. JL

Marlon Byrd…twice in one night….Morgan at his finest

  48. John In LA

The game turned when Wells struck out Alou on 3 pitches when he had to and then Maine came back and couldn’t get L Gonzales on the 3-2 pitch with 2 out. Maine needs to be able to do that if he wants to be a consistant Major League Pitcher.

  49. John Delcos

Nice job by Mota tonight. I don’t know if I buy the Pedro-TV story, but Mota is the positive tonight.-JD

  50. JL

John, Where did that story come from about Pedro finding a flaw with MOta, they said on TV tonight Pedro told Petersen this on Thursday, but I haven’t seen it in any of the papers, and I’ve been at shea the last few nights, so I don’t know if it was mentioned on SNY.

  51. John Delcos

I’m taking a couple of things out of tonight. The first is Mota’s strong two innings. Bullpen coach Guy Conti is close with Pedro Martinez (he taught him the change-up) and they talk all the time. Supposedly, Pedro told Conti about the stride.

The second thing about tonight is John Maine. Four of LA’s runs scored after two outs. OK, an inning was extended by an error, but winning pitchers finish off the inning and Maine couldn’t do it. That’s been a common thread when Maine doesn’t pitch well.-JD

  52. Mike C.

If Pedro can fix Mota’s delivery… MOTA’S DELIVERY… they should fly him up to touch Schoeneweis’s leg.

He’ll instantly heal the severed ligaments with his touch, if he can fix Mota’s delivery.

Hell, if he can fix Mota’s delivery, they don’t need to fly him up… dude’ll just walk on water the entire Atlantic Ocean back.

The good news is Wagner Sosa Heilman and Feliciano all got the night off. It’s a silver lining, anyway.

  53. Spiderpig

Did Miller just say the Mets had sold 6 million tickets for the season? I didn’t know Shea could hold that many people! The new stadium doesn’t look like it will be able to hold 4 million unfortunately.

Definitely looking like Maine is out of the postseason rotation; I don’t care if Perez’s stuff is good for the bullpen. Maybe Pedro actually did turn Mota’s season around. That would be wondaful.

  54. Spiderpig

Meant to post that earlier. By “just,” I mean during the ninth inning, I think.

  55. Tom from Vermont

John, call me crazy but John’s pitches looked better tonight. He should have made better pitches that cost him, but I was encouraged. I bet if you had video of this start and his last couple, there would be a noticable improvement.

Sometimes its not just results. I mean David wells got the win and limited the damage but did he look good? Not really.

  56. adl

Maine doesn’t seem to have the strength to push fatigue and get the job done. That’s not a big deal for a young pitcher in his first full season in MLB because it’s an issue with most of them. He needs someone “with standing” to give him the nugget of advice that he can use to get himself back where he belongs. Skipping a turn in the rotation might do him an awful lot of good, too.

  57. Jeff

JD: The Conti story with Pedro was regarding Sosa’s pitching not Mota. At least that’s what SNY’s Cohen said. I would believe Gary Cohen was accurate as compared to Miller and Morgan: Two lazy announcers.

LGMG: You’re quite the nasty person. Must be of the cantankerous aged ilk.

  58. Jeff

Milledge showed his youth and inexperience in last night’s game. He missed the cutoff man on the ball that he played (very well too) off the wall and that might have enabled the Mets to get the Dodger’s runner at home.
Second, have you folks noticed that he tends to take a jump/hop before he throws the ball back in? I think whoever coaches the outfielders should try to correct this before it ends up costing the Mets. That jump/hop makes him take longer to throw the ball.
I think Green should play at least 4 to 5 games a week. I am a little nervous with Milledge playing should be make the playoffs. Green’s experience does mean something come playoff time.

  59. steve

I was at last night’s game so I need to know…did ESPN show around 10 minutes before the game a montage about the Dodgers and the Mets? On the Diamond Vision scoreboard they showed a montage that ended with Beltran striking out in Game 7 last year! I couldn’t believe it.

  60. Mike C.

    Jeff… I gotta deeply disagree.

Green wasn’t gonna have gotten two hits, a walk and a stolen base in the two-hole and… Green wouldn’t have even been able TO get to the ball TO throw it to the cut-off man.

Tremendous skills tempered down by inexperience with Milledge? Sure.

But those skills are so great that they outweigh Green’s steady mediocrity across the board.

I’d be very happy if Green never plays in the Met outfield again, riding out the rest of the season as a back-up firstbaseman and a left-handed bat off the bench and then…

    Going somewhere else next year.

Dude can’t field at all, Milledge has amazing fielding skills that are merely occasionally betrayed by his youth.

  61. Jeff

It’s been reported the Joe Smith has tendinitis in his elbow and Burgos felt something wrong in his elbow and was removed from the game. Pelfrey has missed his start because of fatigue. Not a good sign for those of us who were hoping New Orleans would supply the big club with some pitching ‘relief.’

  62. steve

Jeff, if those guys were supposed to be the “relief” then I think the Mets would have been in trouble. I’d still like to see Collazo get a chance when the rosters expand and hopefully Humber can get rewarded for his 1 hitter.

  63. Jeff

Steve: I believe that Pelfrey would probably make a good middle innings reliever. I’m not convinced he’s starting material but would be more effective pitching to a few batters over one or two innings.
Humber is a good possibility to get some post September 1 action, especially if the Mets maintain and/or increase their lead against the NL East.

  64. steve

Jeff: What do you think about Collazo? I mean 1.15 WHIP, 2.60 ERA in a hitters league. I think that is pretty impressive. As far as Pelfrey goes, I guess he couldn’t do any worse than Aaron Sele but I don’t see him as having an impact. Also, i’m not sure how up you are on the minors, but do you know anything about Carlos Muniz in Bingo? 1.02 WHIP, .197 BAA. I believe he is their closer.

  65. Jeff

Steve: I don’t follow the minors except to look at NO and the stats of the team. What I read on some other blogs is the only information I get regarding our farm system.
As far as Collazo-never seen him pitch but couldn’t hurt to try him. Not sure if it’s him or another pitcher in AAA who previously tested positive for steroids.
I’m pretty consistent when it comes to cheaters—I don’t want them. Hence, why I think Mota is not a good fit for the Mets.

  66. LetsGoMetsGo

Hope you all enjoyed yourselves making fun of other people. Hopefully, this week, your bosses will publicize every error you make, in public. You are a disgrace to Mets nation. Hope to see you in Philly tonite. But if not, bitch about Wheeler, Sarge, or Kalas if you have MLB.TV or Extra Innings, or whomever it makes you happy to pick on….. but I know you all are all above being criticized… and have never broken a rule in any of your collective lives… Oh how I’m glad to be imperfect…..

  67. Steve C.

All i can complain about is the lame coverage by ESPN. they suck. I am so glad its only 1 game every so often and its mostly on SNY.
ESPN knows nothing about the game nor the players.
