Maine needs to step up

We’ve been here before with the Mets. They are on the verge of something good, but can they finish it off?
John Maine will provide the answer as the Mets try to sweep LA.
What I wrote the other day about Oliver Perez applies today for Maine. He’s pitching nothing like he did in April, so this is an important start for him.
It is, because there is no guarantee what they will get from Pedro Martinez. Every body is excited about Martinez’s return, but nobody knows what they’ll get.

Mets are playing good, whether or not they sweep this series is irrelevant and means nothing of their demeanor as a team or their killer instinct. 2 of 3 is always the goal, you never set your goal at a sweep, so this is already, “something good” as you stated. Maine does need to pitch better then he has, and I’m sure he will, he showed signs of it, he just seemed to be going through a rough patch during the dog days. This whole team is rounding into form and hopefully they can take some pressure off of Maine tonight and he can just go out there and concentrate on making each pitch, one pitch at a time.
Maine always seems to do his best when focused by pressure.
If he can realize that the Mets really need to make a statement with these next eight games, he should step up just as you say.
If not, he’ll probably throw three strong innings and then give up three solo homers in the fourth.
Mike C: Do you really think any pitcher or player, not just Maine might not realize the team is in an important stretch. Please give them credit for some brain power.
Metsfan that is an excellent summary of what’s been going on.
JD: You seemed critical of the Mets for not having someone up in the 7th. I think it was the correct move. El Duque wasn’t getting touched, the pen needs as much rest as possible, and without Wags being available, El Duque needed to stretch and he did. If he would have gotten Gonzalez, I think he would have started the 8th.
