Alou has a great bat can't play D and is injury prone.

Depending on what is out there I wouldn't mind him coming back, but his role needs to change. His bat in the lineup is huge, but Carlos developed this year and Endy will be back so we should have 5 good OF , 2 of them young. If they all don't go down like last year we should be ok.

Obviously we need to upgrade starting pitching and the pen.

No. Don't push your luck with an aging expensive injury prone player.

No way. If the Mets bring him back I guarantee it will be a big mistake. I'd rather see them start Gomez in LF and Milledge in RF and sign a good veteran outfielder to maybe split time with them. By veteran I mean someone who has a few years under his belt but is not over 34-35.

I hope he takes the decision out of their hands and simply retires. I think he may just do that.

Astoria Mets Fan...if I was spending the money, I would want Johan Santana...I believe he won't be interested in returning to the Twins next season, based on his comments after Castillo was traded to us. I am not so cool with Zambrano...he seems like a bit of a nutcase.

No way. We saw Gomez developing by the day and now Milledge developing in front of us. Alou causes chaos because you can't depend on him to play. When does he get hurt, how long do you want a parade of left fielders again? He's hot now but when he cools he's a double play maker like Green and LoDuca, next year he's even slower...
At least with the kids they save a run a game with their speed. Use the money to buy a couple set up men. There are always some on the market.

I'd pick up his option as well. Stick Alou in left, L-Millz in right, Chavey on the bench and you could have Fernando Martinez in AAA as back-up in case of injury. I'd also bring back Marlon Anderson. Then, I would at the least entertain the idea of trading Gomez in a package for an 8th inning set-up guy like a Brad Lidge or Scot Sheilds type of pitcher. Oh...and have a dumptruck full of cash ready to pull up to Carlos Zambrano's door and bring him to NYC.

Ironically I was thinking the same thing yesterday during the game. I think I would take the chance and bring him back next year. I liked Gomez but I still think he's not quite ready for the Big Show. Milledge in right, Alou in left and Beltran in center.
With Chavez on the bench--not bad.

Keith talked about this during the broadcast yesterday and said that he would bring him back and pick up his option year. He likes Alou's clubhouse presence and his production and I tend to agree, even with the likelihood that he would inevitably spend time on the DL.

I guess it also depends on how management feels about Gomez and Milledge. I'm going to assume that one of them (hopefully Milledge) will take the RF spot and depending on management's confiedence on the other player, perhaps give him LF. Going by how the Mets seem to love the veteran player, I think its more likely that an established player gets the other OF spot. Now, i don't know who is available as a free agent but I dont see how the Mets could sign another player like Alou for the same amount of money and more importantly years (one). He'll be 42-ish(?) so that's a risk, obviously, but I would like to see him back next year.
