We’ve already had some spirited conversation today, which is great. Debate is what makes following sports so fun. This is your forum for whatever is on your mind.
Questions, comments, high heat … this is the place. Take care and enjoy the game.
Nate McLouth: You can’t stop him. You can only hope to contain him.
John, with Maine due up first in the next inning, is anyone warming up in the Mets’ ‘pen?
I should add, the Pirates’ TV feed showed an empty Mets bullpen – just Guy Conti with a clipboard in his hand.
Hey Gil, Which other team broadcast crew do you think is the worst?
I can’t deal with the Marlins’ guys the most, and the Phils except for Kalas.
The answer is Orosco.
I don’t have a good feeling about this game…
Guillermo Mota will be the next pitcher.
Gil: There is now. Looks like Mota. Rough night for Maine. He leaves with the lead, but 117 pitches in five innings is way too many. He struck out eight and walked three, which ran up the count some, but mostly he was running deed counts all night. On the positive side, he didn’t give up six runs again. On the other hand, he could have if it weren’t the Pirates.-JD
It is Mota that’s coming in. This really would be a good time to send the kids to bed.-JD
I hope you don’t coach little League BH.
What would you do, put Sosa in to start the 5th?
LGMG: I COMLETELY agree with you about the Marlins announcers. I hate their homering. Same with the Nationals’ play-by-play man, Bob Carpenter.
The Bucs’ ones are bad for another reason – they’re about as animated as a pair of house plants. The Phils? Don’t have too many feelings about them, except, like you, I enjoy Harry Kalas’s voice.
Most times now, I watch Extra Innings on mute and have the Mets radio team on, on mlb.com.
I like the A’s TV team and the Dodgers TV team (hard to beat Vin Scully having a friendly, one-on-one conversation with you).
I used to love last year’s D-Backs’ team of Thom Brennaman and Mark Grace – and they even had Joe Garagiola doing color for some games.
The Cubs’ guys – Pat Hughes and Bob Brenly – are pretty good, while the Giants’ Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper are blatant Barry Bonds sycophants.
The Cardinals? I refuse to listen to one syllable, after last year.
The Astros’ Bill Brown has an annoying, over-enunciating, authoritative tone, like the D-Rays’ Dewayne Staats.
Chip Caray is a team brown-nosing Jim Carrey look alike who I’ll never listen to again.
I never hear the Padres announcers, though I’m in San Diego, because they don’t make their channel available here, on DirecTV, because it’s owned by a competitor, Cox Cable.
A feared hitter, that was Kata’s third RBI of the season. Then again, Alou didn’t play that well, either.-JD
LGMG…big difference between little kids having fun and grown men who are paid to play the game. I would have started with Sele since Sosa isn’t available and gone from there.
Alou giveth and Alou taketh away.
Pathetic play by Alou…don’t know what he was thinking.
It would be nice if the offsense woke up again.
Only two hits since the first inning ain’t gonna get it done.
I’ll be shocked if we win this game.
I forgot Carpenter. I can understand why there are no National fans. He is really horrible. The White Sox guys are outrageous too.
But you are right about Scully. For the rest of the world Scully announces solo and has more info about every player then any whole team if announcers has.
The Pirate announcers are bored mainly because they’ve had to announce the Pirates for a long time. They’ve been there since the Pirates were good so they have to be forgiven for sounding dead.
MLB doesn’t cover the Padres either. When the Mets were in SD I had the Mets crew the whole time.
The Yankee announcers suck also. They are the most boring guys in the world. Even Leiter, who has a good sense of humor has been trained to put us to sleep.
And Joe &^ck in StLouis, I can’t listen to him either.
Who said Sosa wasn’t available?
Maybe he’ll be the next Turk. what did he piitch in something like 12 straight games down the stretch?
I’m shocked Sosa is in there. I really hope Willie doesn’t turn into Joe Torre and burn Sosa out by Sept.
If you told me in spring training that Jorge Sosa would at one point be the team’s best starter and then at another point be the team’s best reliever I woulda laughed in your face. Probably the most unlikely scenario ever.
LGMG: Joe Buck is a punk.
How Fox allows him to cover Cardinals’ games without sensing any conflict of interest defies reason. He’s a second-generation Cardinals announcer, for goodness sake! (Though I loved listening to Jack Buck in the ‘90s on CBS’s national games…”I don’t believe…what I just saw!”)
I can’t stand the Yankees’ team.
(Though I have to admit, in my childhood, when not listening to the Mets, I loved hearing The Scooter.)
Is it possible that if Endy can return before 1 Sep that Omar would DFA Green? I can’t see them ridding Anderson or Easley. Gotay is the only sub at SS, Milledge is earning more time and we need 2 catchers?
Green will remain if only to face Smoltz lol
The Scooter was oure entertainment. Fox just sucks. Nothing else to say I disagree with you about Grace because one game in Arizona he was singing “Beat the Mets, Beat the Mets”, and it was too irritating, but he is usually funny and he knows a lot.
Jorge Sosa is the pitching staff MVP if not the team MVP
How long until the “DFA!” “DFA!” chants at Shea start, after Shawn Green keeps making outs?
What a total waste of an at-bat.
A one-pitch flail back to the mound.
You know Alou has almost caught Green in the RBI totals?
DiFelice also didn’t help, having a one-pitch at-bat, running Grabow’s total pitch count for the inning to a whopping five.
We all in agreement that if Green is still in there that ball goes to the wall and the game is tied? Good.
C’mon, Billy. Wait—c’mon guys, make Billy moot.
If Delgado is hurt do the Mets bring up that 4A first baseman Tracy or does Green play first?
I’d rather hear DFA chants than booing.
Very smart move, inserting Lasto in RF for speed and defense. But Green at first? Last time Willie did that, I almost rushed the field from my third base field box at Dodger Stadium after he dropped Billy wagner’s pickoff throw.
I hope the rumors of the Mets’ interest in Ronny Paulino isn’t true.
From his performance tonight, he couldn’t throw out the trash.
I don’t know what I enjoyed more there—the run scoring, or Keith’s various gutteral utterances during that sequence. JD, you’ll have to trust me on this one.
Hilarious replay on Bucs TV – the entire four rows behind the third-base dugout collectively threw their hands to their heads reacting to Shawn Chacon’s errant throw!
Chacon might wanna try and tilt the brim of his hat up so he can see where he’s throwing. Might help.
The Bucco boys said Delgado left because he got hurt on the foul ball he didn’t catch along the wall a few innings ago.
Pirate fans are well versed in throwing their hands to their heads in disgust. But they don’t boo. They just say “Thank God its Football season”.
Bay isn’t as good a fielder as I’d expect. Nice running by Wright, and nice to see some insurance.
OK all you fearful ones. They turned out the lights.
Wow, now I’m sorry I walked away from the TV when Mota stepped in.
Bay fields as bas as Alou and Green and he’s not old and worn out. He’s a natural born DH.
What a weird game for the offense, no? 5 run 1st, 5 run (so far) 9th, two hits in between?
Thanks Guys – while I was doing office work, you cheered the Mets to a nice lead!!
No way that pitch to Green was an accident.
Time for one of their guys to get drilled tomorrow night. Can’t let these guys push us around.
Not to mention the repeated plunking of Milledge a few weeks back.
Yup, that pitch had intent. The first thing I thought of was, ``why don’t they pick on somebody who has actually done something tonight?’’-JD
Milledge getting hit. He doesn’t seem to mind. Kind of like a young Frank Robinson attitude at the plate.
Yup. But it’s hard to retaliate with two soft-tossers like Sele now and B-Law tomorrow.
Enough scrwing around.
Get Sele out of there.
Nothing says revenge like a slow curve to the ankle. Aaron Sele = Shawn Estes.
IT’S NOT FUNNY ANYMORE.
Why can’t it just be a quick 1-2-3 and good night?
JD, for all of our sakes, I’m hoping you don’t have to do a last-minute re-write.
Always thinking of the team is Aaron Sele. First the retaliation pitch and then giving Billy another save opportunity. You can’t win without that kind of team thinking.-JD
I’m with Ben: have your lede and nut graf done, just get a ew quotes from the locker room and you’re good to go.
