I don’t know if I am the only thinking along these lines, but I am a little concerned about John Maine. He hasn’t pitched well in the second half and has given up 12 runs in his last two starts.
Anybody else feel the same way?
3 shaky starts but within those starts he’s only had 2 bad innings. It’s not like the league figured him out. He’s elevating his pitches and walking guys.
It’s probably a loss of focus or fatigue rather than injury or the league adjusting. That’s to be expected from a guy pushing himself beyond anything he’s done before.
I think he’ll be ok if he can skip a start. Maybe that rest will be the single biggest contribution Pedro can make this year.
I am with BMC. I would be more concerned if he had nothing to start the game. Probably just a little worn out at this point.
A big advantage of a hot stretch now to pad the lead a little is being able to give guys like Maine and Perez a week off in September. maybe skipping a start to rest and work on basics with the Jacket will get them back on track.
Assuming they make the playoffs, these guys will have to pitch well for them to advance. But, the post season is a lot different than a game in August. Not as hot, more adrenelin, and hopefully extra rest (if you close out a series early).
I think it has to do with mental fatigue more than anything else. I have not seen a drop in velocity but he is just not hitting his spots and teams are making him pay.
I think with some extra days between starts would help but the question becomes who would be the spot starter.
He has had two bad starts but he hasn’t been bad the entire time. He was great in Chicago for the first two and then just blew up. If he struggles tonight, i will be worried but I expect him to return to his old self and provide a solid performance.
The reason I’m NOT concerned is because he’s been pretty dominant for the first few innings. For some reason its in the middle of the game where he just LOSES it!
He hasn’t struggled in the first innings so its not completely gone.
If I worried as much as you do, I’d have a stroke. More importantly did you get a Ralph Kiner coin last night?
Yes, I’ll be anxious to see how he’s doing as he gets into the middle innings tonight.
I am concerned both he and Ollie are having issues right now.
I heard somewhere this is the most he has pitched in the majors. So I guess he will have to learn to deal with a full season.
Perhaps a skipped start for both might help in some way.
As others have said, if there was a drop in velocity I would be concerned about dead-arm, etc.. but it seems like its just a mental bump. he gets down on himself so hard – you can see it on his face. He is not controlling his emotions in between pitches, he is not able to clear his head after a bad pitch or a missed call by the ump. You could totally see his frustration tonight during the Wilson AB where he fouled off a bunch and then got the walk… I think he just needs a breather. Let him go home for a week or two. get him out of the stadium.
