Mets Chat Room

Welcome back to Mets Chat Room. Greetings from Pittsburgh. A beautiful night. The Roberto Clemente Bridge spans the Allegheny River connecting downtown and the stadium complexes. Two hours before gametime they close it off to vehicles and make it a pedestrian walkway. Real nice view to see the people streaming across.
I’ve posted another poll: Would you do the Nady-Perez deal over again? Tell us your thoughts and then vote.
The floor is now yours on anything you’d like to talk about, including comments about the game. Talk with you throughout the night.

Might be time to take a certain poll selection off the board. Just a thought…
To Mike: Just did that. Revisting the Nady-Perez deal.-JD
SNY had a nice establishing shot of the bridge; it looks really nice. What happened to calling this “Infield Chatter”? That had a nice, unique ring to it, instead of the generic “Mets Chat Room.”
This 1st inning is doing nothing to make me forget the horrible trips here in 2005 (Looper!) and last year (though I was thrilled that it meant the opportunity to attend the clincher at Shea).
What was wrong with the other poll?
Ben: I wanted to make this a chat room and felt calling it such would open it up a bit and encourage people to chat among themselves.-JD
In the last 20 minutes I’ve seen a key difference between the Mets and Bucs. The Pirates’ 3rd base coach held runners three different times when they probably could’ve scored; in the end they got two runs instead of three. Now Milledge takes the extra base at second, and the inning’s potential goes way up. Say what you want about Willie, but his culture of aggressive running has been one of the keys to the Mets’ success the last 3 years.
Or out-of-field chatter. :)
What were the results of the other poll? Last I remember, it was Mota, Schoeneweis, Bell/Ring, Bannister, I think.
Spiderpig: Mota was first and Schoeneweis second. I was surprised how many thought of Bell/Ring.-JD
Bases loaded, one out and no runs scored. Bookmark that inning.-JD
John,
Earlier tonight I heard on WFAN that Pedro would probably pitch next monday, which would be five days rest again. You think they’ll go to a six-man rotation. Not only does it benefit Pedro but probably everyone in the rotation especially Maine and Perez who look like thay could use some extra rest down the stretch.
To JL: I can’t see them going to a six-man rotation, at least not permanently. If I remember correctly, they went to a six-man rotation for a cycle or two last year, but didn’t stick with it. Willie likes to squeeze in an extra day now and then for Glavine and Duque, but I can’t see them doing it for the entire month of September.-JD
It might be a more viable option this year, however, with so many needing the rest, unless they want to just take Maine or Perez out of the rotation for some time.
Jose Reyes seems a little off at the plate tonight.-JD
Jeez, if only Clemente wore #20!
(For people not watching SNY, Gary explained that the wall is 21 feet high as a tribute to Clemente. Ironic that it was Delgado who hit it to the 21st foot)
Good job Ben.-JD
Ben – I said the exact same thing! LOL
Second and third, one out, and nobody scores. We’ve seen this before.-JD
Jose Reyes should donate his salary to charity tonight, because he hasn’t earned a penny of it.
JD,
Can you please tell us why the Mets haven’t hit a sac fly since the late 1970s?
I disagree with Gary that the Mets “ran themselves” out of the inning. Di Felice would have been dead to rights at the plate, even if he caught Alomar’s signal right away. The only way he – maybe – could’ve scored was if he never slowed down, which wouldn’t have made sense because Bay bobbled it late. As for Castillo, obviously it’s inexcusable not to run that out, but you have to believe he would’ve been out (again, not an excuse). So they didn’t not score because of running, but because they’re clutch-hitting like it’s June.
Forget the Reyes-hating tonight; everyone can have a bad game. I’m more concerned with his general lack of coming through in the clutch—I think last Wednesday’s game was a perfect example. Bottom 7, Mets down 2, bases loaded, 1 out. Reyes, who is capable of doing damage so many different ways, pops up. No runs score. Thankfully for him Castillo came through, otherwise I think he would’ve taken a hit in the press and from the fans.
Again is it that hard to hit a sac fly? I am really down on Reyes…he hasn’t been clutch since April…Ramirez and Rollins are clearly better this year. As a Met fan, I only hope this is a fluke season for Reyes as far as RISP hitting b/c this year he hasn’t come through!
Hi John =
Glad that Willie tried this lineup – maybe he really does listen to us.
To GTC: Has it been that long?-JD
Nice – I walk in here and Moises puts the team ahead by two.
seems like it JD…..seems like it.
should have had a sac fly in the 7th and the 8th making it 7-3.
Food for thought; should Willie have benched Castillo for not running to first on that ball in the dirt?
I was thinking just before DiFelice hit into the DP that they probably could use another run.-JD
Did I miss something? Is Feliciano hurt?
Some of the new baseball fans might be surprised at all the tributes to Phil Rizzuto today, but in fact The Scooter was part of NY baseball from the 1940s until he retired in 1996. He was an active player until the mid ‘50s after having taken time out to serve in the US Navy during WWII. The rest of his career was in broadcasting.
Brian Williams posted this in his blog this afternoon:
“I’m sad about Phil Rizzuto. If you grew up in this area, you remember hearing “I’m Phil Rizzuto for the Money Store…” to say nothing of his storied career with the Yanks. He was a nice man, a class act and a helluva ballplayer whose stats don’t begin to tell the story.”
And then devoted a couple of minutes on NBC Nightly News to Rizzutos career.
I find it refreshing that the Rizzuto tributes to come from baseball fans of all persuasions, not just the Yankees. That’s a real honor for a great baseball guy.
It’s OK. You can open your eyes now. Schoeneweis got out of the inning and Milledge didn’t hurt himself on that fly ball.-JD
John does Willie want the Mets to lose?
Heilman ready but instead he pitches Sosa for 2 innings again.. it’s only a matter of time before Sosa’s arm gets tired he’s not used to pitching every day or 2 innings every other day..
Seriously sometimes I think he wants the Mets to lose..
Amen.
Just came up from the clubhouse. Pedro Feliciano was available. Willie went with Scott Schoeneweis because, ``I felt he could get the guy out.’’
-Milledge said he broke back too fast. ``I didn’t have to dive for it if I took the correct route,’’ he said.
-Moises Alou said he was looking fastball from Shawn Chacon.
-Orlando Hernandez threw 130 pitches. But The Jacket said he’s still on for Sunday.
Willie was all of about 5 feet from being very very very wrong about Schoenweis. He does not get credit for that call despite the result.
Willie says Feliciano is available, but I don’t think I have even seen him even warming up in the last four games. Something’s gotta be up, whether he is tired or hurt or Willie just wants to give him time off. Maybe he is pitching Sosa to see what he has, knowing that Heilman and Feliciano will be more important in September and October.
To BH: There’s no doubt Milledge saved Willie there. I thought it was interesting to see how Milledge answered questions about the ball Phelps hit. He just flat out said he misjudged the ball. I’m heading back to the hotel.
I’ll be anxious to see what you guys post overnight.-JD
...and holy cow! Three late-inning come-from-behind wins in one night!—The Mets, Phils and Braves all came from behind to win their respective games on Tuesday nite! That’s two too many.
The Braves were in the sixth, so not too late. The Red Sox were really late though, not that it matters to us. The Cubs got close, too.
Good to see Alou silencing the haters, along with Willie playing Milledge in right; somehow I don’t think he will be there tomorrow.
OH yeah, what about that “transfer” call by Fairchild? I guess there’s a reason he is a vacation fill-in ump. That ball was never in Wilson’s glove, nor was Wilson at second base when the ball came to him. Wright was safe all the way. Luckil, Mets won or that would be a much bigger story.
I shoulda specified: Three late-inning come-from-behind wins in one night…IN THE NL EAST.
Yeah, what a tool! I remember early in the season when the umps were making bad calls on the Mets almost nitely.
It seems like the lack of quality catching in the minors is a universal thing. No offense to DiFelice or Alomar, but you’d have to assume there would have to be better options out there in such a situation…
JD:Maybe Willie gives you these “gut feel” lines because there’s no way to repond to them If Feliciano is hurting only a bad manager would make it public. I know you all don’t like him but he isn’t stupid.
Alomar did a lousy job coaching at third. He gave DeFelice the stop sign so early that there was no way for him to score when he changed to a go sign. I was sitting right there and it was so obvious.
El Duque was horrible all night. Thankfully he picked the Pirates to stink against.
How is the view from the roof JD?? Did you get a Ralph Kiner coin? It was Kiner “Pirate Hall of Fame” tribute night for those in NYC.
I still think we need a 1st baseman. still batting 5th and 9 out of 10 its an out.
Former Met goes nuts, gets arrested:

Offerman was at New Orleans most of the year. I guess they let him go. Glad they did. They should stop filling AAA with so many washed up veterans like him. Move the kids up.
That’s what Gary was saying on the broadcast last night, that Norfolk wasn’t keen to remain affiliated with the Mets because they brought in old players that didn’t excite the fans and bring in a consistent crowd.
I missed Cohen’s comment. But I made a post about this the other day. I read an article from the Baltimore Sun quoting the Norfolk owners and they were not happy that so many washed up veterans had appeared at Norfolk the last few years. I know I wouldn’t want to pay good money to watch players like Offerman, Ledee, Gerald Williams, Lima, and DiFelice. A few of these players are OK but not when there are so many of them on the roster.
On your Perez-Nady question, you weren’t specific enough. My answer is “No way” if I’m the Pirates and “Hell Yes” if I’m the Mets.
So, from whose perspective are you asking the question?
the mets.
who cares about the pirates?
