I asked for you to consider this blog as a Mets chat room and the last two nights went really well. A lot of good comments and conversation.
Keep it up. Questions, comments and complaints are all welcome.
If you just want to vent, that’s fine, too. Looking forward to talking with you throughout the day.

Mike F…it’s just you. Keith doesn’t root!
John,
I thought Willie valued defense, a lot.
If this is so why does he field a very weak defensive OF? Lastings should be playing every day. If he wants Marlon in there from time to time he can choose one of the corners.
I just don’t get this.
As for the Mets and Braves. Just bad luck that last fly ball didn’t quite make it out of the yard.
Dave
If you say you’re playing Castillo for defense and then you start Anderson in centrefield over Milledge… you’re either lying or you’re crazy.
On the one hand, I suppose it means that Willie doesn’t have something against Lastings specifically and that’s good.
On the other hand, it means that his managerial style is so disturbingly backward that he’ll play veterans over rookies even when the rookies are playing so much better that playing them would generate probably an extra win a week.
Steve C. You just don’t see the picture except as you pre-conceive it. Castillo is a great # 2 batter and a great 2nd baseman. Gotay is not an everyday player, and may never be. Castillo hasn’t satisfued you despite hitting around .500 with the Mets then thank goodness your not a Met scout.
Milledge has been sat against certain kind of righties, who Willie and the staff feel he’s not ready for. Its up to Willie and the staff to grow him as well as try to win. I knew Lastings wouldn’t start today because of the kind of crap that Hudson kind throw and how he can exploit the outside which Lastings has had his biggest problem with.
You know its kind of sad reading your stuff. Willie says he’s always proud of his team. Fans like you, are always pissed about your team, at your team etc.
I’m proud of the team I root for, I just think they’re often profoundly mishandled.
How do you know Gotay will never be a starter? He never got a fair shake with the Royals, hasn’t gotten a fair shake with the Mets yet and he’s younger than David Wright, if I remember correctly.
Castillo is a fine player, I’m not saying that he isn’t an above-average infielder and a serviceable bunter and dinks-and-dunks singles hitter.
If the Mets hadn’t already had a better option at second, starting Gotay most of the time and occasionally hitting Easley against the tougher lefties… I’d be all for the Castillo deal.
But Gotay was a 24 year old, hitting .350 with extrabase power and he got benched for a .290 singles only hitter whose defense is already deteriorating in his early thirties from knee problems…
I think you may be, in fact, the one missing the big picture:
You can’t KNOW if Gotay won’t be a starter if you don’t TRY him there and give him an honest shot at it.
Castillo isn’t the future of this team, he’s creaking almost as loudly as Valentin was two months ago.
The Mets had a chance to develop Gotay as the starter for the next ten years and they put it on hold for a guy who the Twins dumped because his legs are going and his Gold Glove went with them.
He would be a great two-month bandaid if the Mets didn’t already have better options at second.
But instead they put a bandaid over one of the healthier parts of their body, functionally suffocating the team.
Even in the pennant hunt, you can’t only play for “now”. Castillo is no long term answer and it’s time to develop your long term answers in the crucible of August and September baseball.
That goes double for Milledge and the husk of what used to be Shawn Green.
ahem. Hey Letsgometsgo Iam not the Steve that posted after me.
I am Steve C. friend to dave. and long time blogger here. the other Steve is yet another Steve.
John-
yeah they arent playing like a first place team , I will give you that. The drive and the spirit from last year seems to have dissipated. I think it has to do with a lot of the consistency of the players. Delgado is getting better but still inconsistent. Everyone is hammering Green but he’s doing far better than Delgado. Anderson, didnt play any better than milledge. Milledge has grown and is growing. I listeend to Keith and Ron on that one. Milledge has won me over. castillo has the bat but the fielding is no better than Gotay/Easley. Alou is waking up but he’s still injured.
So because of health and maybe low morale from all the injuries the team is suffering. Last year we had all these deals that bumped us up with all these talented players. and this year they have all been injured. or producing just a tad less. its a dripping faucet syndrome. the drip in of itself isnt bad. its the duration thats adding up.
Sorry Steve C, but the other C whatever knew it was aimed at him in response So to Mike C,
1. Why do you think Gotay didn’t get a fair shake in KC. He did he stunk and they gave up on him. Simple as that.
2. Gotay didn’t hit 300 for the Tides last year and not for NO this year. His range is bad, he can’t go back on a pop up. He’s a back up guy who gace us a wonderful run until we got a real 2nd basemen. Don’t beleive it. you prejudged the Castillo trade and now have toned down a bit because he showed you what a number 2 hitter is suppoesed to be. We had a great # 2 batter in 1986 named Wally Backman. He was identical to Castillo.
3. You make a big deal every game Milledge sits. He sits less than half. You don’t understand the art of development. So be it. You also blind tyourself to the fact that he is a mediocre fielder. He misjudges almmost every fly ball. He has a lot to learn and in August I love the ways he is being used. Development and winning efforts by the manager. This ain’t a computer game bro….
4. You don’t want Green to play? Who would yoy play??? Let’s see
Beltran HURT
Gomez HURT
Johnson HURT
FMart HURT
Newhan YOU HATE HIM
Easley not an everyday player anymore
AMBRES another KC reject… You seem to have an affinity for guys who can’t make it with the worst franchise in the AL.
Castro ??????
Leddee Naw even you wouldn’t go there, would you??
Maine He’s in a pitchng slump, and hit a HR lets do it
5. You just hate Willie for whatever reason. It wouldn’t matter what he did, you be critical. Did you like Bobby V? The man had a different line up every freakin night, and double switched every inning so that everyone played every day. You want Newhan in the game every day? Yet Bobby V won witr a team like this. Not that great.
