If you’re watching on TV and noticed the initials B.R. on Willie Randolph’s cap, they are for Bill Robinson. Robinson was a former teammate-turned-mentor of Randolph’s in Pittsburgh who died this week.
“He taught me how to play the game,’’ Randolph said.
MLB usually frowns on additions to the uniform, but Randolph said he doesn’t care.
“It’s OK,’’ Randolph said. “I’m not even thinking about it.’’
Robinson was also a Mets’ hitting coach. The Mets sent a contingent to the funeral today in New Jersey of Darryl Strawberry, Bud Harrelson and Randolph’s wife, Gretchen.
