Yes, Vedder did the seventh inning stretch.
John I’m getting sick and tired of Willie’s managing technique. I don’t care about his gut as its been getting bigger and bigger as the year goes on. The Man has no comon sense and has to stay true to his bench players so much that he is willing to give a game away to keep his bench players happy.
Don’t give me that BS that the mets are in first place with a good manager this team would be 10 games up.. another example 2nd and 3rd 2 outs Newhan up instead of pinch hitting Alou he keeps in the AAA Newhan and there goes any chance of scoring because Newhan can’t hit for anything.
I really wish Omar didn’t give Willie that extension because he doesn’t deserve it anyone from the school of joe toree shouldn’t even get a chance to manage, and for some reason i think willie being a minority has something to do why hes managing right now.
Oh yes, Omar risked his future to hire a minority with no talent. If that’s the case why didn’t he hire an Hispanic? Half the fans think he only looks for Hispanic players. Why any differnt ideas about the manager?
I really want white Jeff Torborg back so we can have a cellar dwellar again. Or maybe Art Howe, the jerk that insisted Reyes play with a stress facture. Or Dallas Green the great manager who blew out the arms of Izzy, Wilson and the Pulse. You guys don’t have a clue what bad managing is.
One thing about your blog John that occasionally upsets me is your constand questioning. I understand a lot of it infact, I really do, and there’s always a time to question. However, you’re making assumptions based on your knowledge of the game and somehow equating that to a superior knowledge than Willie or anyone else on the Mets staff. In truth, Willie managing a 1st place team and has for 2 straight years now. Say what you will, but that’s not just a fluke. Sure, we call him out when his moves don’t work, but sometimes his moves do work, and those are the ones we usually never talk about. Either way, the guy has been around baseblal his entire life and has been around winning baseball his entire life. His players like him and he seems to really know how to keep every single guy on the bench involved to a piont where, if they’re needed, they can contribute. The guy knows baseball, it may not be by the book every time or it may be totally by the book, but he has hunches, and they do work. No hunch or move can work every time, because why? Players fail, its a game of failure. Its just your constant questioning of him and you saying how you feel this way, you think this, you think that, what do you know? really? Try objectivity a little more, just some advice.
Mel I really agree with you, and liked the way you said it. On a lot of the blogs I read it seems like Willie is constantly picked on, especially when the team loses. More often than not the complainer has no good example of what the problem is.
It is not Willie’s fault that this team hasn’t hit consistently. That has been the real problem with the team this year. Coming out of spring training it was assumed that the Mets would have a monster offense, which hasn’t materialized.
But besides all that today was a big win! Good job team.
Metsfan, my only issue with this blog is that John isn’t questioning enough.
This team is successful DESPITE Willie’s strategy, not because of it.
Their young core of players is just that good and if the older peripheral players are healthy, alls the better.
We’re talking about a guy who blew a playoff series by listening to his “gut” that Floyd could still play and a dude who thinks that David Newhan is a starting outfielder against right-handed pitchers.
We’re talking about a guy benching Gotay and Milledge when all they’re giving him is multi-hit games sprinkled with doubles and dingers.
I don’t care how much experience you have or how much you’re paid or where you work… you make choices like that, you need to be questioned and thoroughly.
I judge by results, that is where we differ
If you bought a lottery ticket and won a hundred dollars, would you then spend your whole life’s savings on them, assuming you would multiply your savings by one hundred? That’s looking at results too.
Willie’s schizoid irrational line-up creation and in-game moves have hurt this team all of the time he’s been the manager… it’s just that we’ve had teams so good that they’ve overcome most of those bad choices.
Bad managing hurts more than good managing helps… at the end of the day, of course, it’s the players playing the game… but bad managing takes away chances and good managing gets you more good chances.
Would you rather have Ruben Gotay or Luis Castillo at the plate in a situation where you need more than a single?
Would you really rather bat Shawn Green or David Newhan over Lastings Milledge?
“Results” are a slippery slope in this game of ball.
You can mess up a lot and still win. You can do everything but one thing right and still lose.
But to say that the Mets are a winning team and therefore Willie knows what he’s talking about?
Pfft. I don’t buy it.
wow, Mike I hope you didn’t slit your wrists with the win today. But Mike C, all good managers make moves that nobody but managers understand. All the managers that took the Mets to the pennant went against the book whenever they felt like it. Hodges, with platooning and sometimes not platooning based on his gut, Davey Johnson throwing an outfielder like Kevin Mitchell at shortstop of all places when El Sid pitched because he said there wouldn’t be many ground balls, Valentine’s endless line up changes and tinkering with the bull pen. Willie is following their leads and he’s getting more out of everybody. It was easy last year when the big boys all were big boys and the rest of the division sucked but this year is different and it takes keeping everyone on their toes to win.
You say Lastings and Gotay are hot so they should play every day. I say they are hot because the manager knows when to play them and when not to. You say Gotay is more important because he can hit a double, I say Castillo is more important because he can turn the DP and cover more ground. You probably wanted Alou pinch hitting in the 7th for Newhan. I saw Newhan make a catch in the 8th that Alou couldn’t make that probably saved a big inning with the big Cubbies coming up. And on and on…..
You ain’t the gospel and neither am I. But the man has to live or die with these kind of decisions and to make the accusations you do is just unfair.
You keep your go by the book guys like Art Howe was and I’ll take the winning team where everyone knows he has to stay alert because he will be called upon.
I thought today was a great game and a great win and you are bitching away about Willie like we lost…...
Willie has put out some strange lineups lately but I think he is a good manager. As others have stated he seems to have this team behind him which at times is more important than some tactical decisions.
However todays OF was particularly weak. If you want to test Newhan in the OF fine. Just don’t do it in this way. Willie values D and this OF is a sorry collection of misfits in that department. At least if Lastings is roaming CF he has a chance to help the corners.
That said I am glad they won and it all worked out in the end.
But I guess the quote by John a few days ago has been answered as far as Anderson playing CF.
curious about the mota over heilman choice. it worked out, which is good but i would like to know what factors influenced willie’s decision.
