I heard a rumor that Omar is waiting until August to do deals for players. I have a feeling when Gomez gets off the DL, he is a goner.
Why would they trade Gomez while Green’s on the roster? With Green, a productive AB with runners on base is a K—and he’s gone in another 10-12 weeks. Nah, Gomez will be with the Mets for a good while longer.
Lets hope he hires a US citizen this time :-o
(yeah i went there big deal)
Green is a K? I didnt see that last night. I saw him on Base.
The iffy one is delgado with runners on base. he has only just started producing barely. meanwhile Green has been playing is butt off since coming off the DL. and i was his biggest critic. But he has shown time and again that HE is trying and playing. I watched delgado make that catch last night and smile. listen thats teh same catch he let go by a few nights agao. Luckily for him “Keith” wasnt the commentator when he did that…
The bigges note on that catch: Keith said very little about it. Why because that was a catch ALL 1st basemen should make. I am glad he caught it but if he hadnt with “Keith” in the booth ooh the tirade!
:-)
If anyone is impressed by Green then they must not be watching this year’s Green. No power, no range, no clutch hitting, 29 RBI from right field with only 2 weeks on DL sucks. There are more hits to right field that should be caught than hits in Green’s bat. Carlos may be having a bad year, and indeed is, but is still twice as productive, and powerful than Green. Notice who was dropped to 8th spot. Message there, next drop is the bench. And don’t say he was 8th because it was a lefty. Anderson was in the 6 hole.
PS: About trying. They are all trying.
I only know green as a MET i dont watch other teams.
and WILLIE or OMAR is in love with delgado. he should have been batting 8th for months. all those lost games were because he stranded runners. damn everyone is blind to delgado.
Delgado has acceptable power numbers 16hr about 50 r/rbi but a 250 avg. He is hitting about 330 this month.
Green is hitting 20 points higher but all the other numbers are inferior.
I agree that Green seems to show more effort this year than last. I would prefer his power numbers were up because otherwise the other Carlos is a better alternative at this point if he were here.
But we have no choice on either. We have no OF so are forced to play Green and for better or worse Carlos is our power guy.
Dave
Of course he’d be waiting until waivers to do deals…
Too many teams think they’re still in it right now. You won’t get any value for anything at this point unless you figure out a deal that genuinely helps both teams now or you’re dumping a trouble maker.
This said… God I hope they don’t do anything dump with Gomez.
With Beltran dinged up, I like the idea of a minor deal for an insurance fourth-outfielder type more but… that’s about it.
No big trades, get a sixth-seventh inning bullpen upgrade if it’s possible, get a fourth-outfielder or fifth-starter in a small deal if you can, get a backup firstbaseman if a nice small deal presents itself.
Green:
2 outs: .315 .376 .478 .854
2 out, RISP: .310 .444 .552 .996
Tie game: .362 .389 .507 .896
within 1 run: .323 .379 .511 .890
yeah, guess he’s just not clutch
Anyone else hoping for a rainout sometime in the next week and a half and a no decision (win of course!) next Tuesday against the Brewers so that Glavine can win #300 against Atlanta on Tues 8/7?
Now look at delgados numbers ..
It’s Mick’s birthday today. What say you, Delcos?
Why don’t you look at them Steve? I’ve noticed in all of your ranting about Delgado you have yet to provide any statistical backup for your arguments. Why don’t you show us how he’s hit in the last 30 games. Or how he’s lifted his batting average 40 points. Can you do that? Or are you just going to continue to mindlessly rant about his hispanic heritage and parrot what Keith Hernandez says in the booth about his fielding?
JR –
well I go by what I see. Averages are just that, numbers.
As for parroting Keith- he was THe best 1st baseman going. so I listen to what he has to say about how onw should play 1st.
Or do you deny Keith having the right to advise the proper playing of 1st.
As for the spanish thing-I call it the way i see it. Besides it isnt the spanish so much as the fact that whether they are citizens or not.
I have a big issue with corporations not hiring Americans.
I still think Omar needs to improve the pen somehow someway. The league might be on to Mighty Joe Smith and with the exception of Pedro F. and Wagner, the pen is still shaky. I was impressed with Heilman yesterday, so hopefully he has turned the page. Also i’d see what the Royals would need for Reggie Sanders.
We need a little more bullpen. Of course, I am beginning to wonder if Sosa is just a flash in the pan and what we’ve been saying lately from him is his true ability. He wouldn’t do us any good in the bullpen in that case.
Sosa’s still looking good in the first two or three innings, even when he’s struggling, suggesting he’d still be a good longman in the ‘pen.
Delgado, I still argue, is fighting some kind of arm hand or upper body injury and… has figured out how to partially adjust, finally, but isn’t gonna be “the real Delgado” without a whole lot of winter rest.
Playing injured doesnt help the team. If he is playing injured and he uses that as an excuse post season. I will be furious. everyone else that got injured took time off.
He’s probably worried they will find someone better. :-\
Heilman is fine. He was the same last year. This spring everyone was glowing about him. He gives up HR has the occassional melt down.
overall he is reliable, much better than most.
You probably won’t get a better short man without giving up the whole farm system.
But I agree it would be nice to get another bullpen guy. Some of the offseason moves have not worked out, but that is always the case with the pen. Overall the pen is fine. But as with everything you can always get better.
We have Heilman,Pedro,Wagner as our pen. Everyone else fills in.
Our starting pitching is fine. If our offense can get better than the first half crap we will be ok.
We get to beat up on our weak division foes. The hard part is over. Everything now is stearing toward October.
Dave
Well Steve C if citizenship is your problem then shut up about Omar, American citizen born in the USA….
You are a sad example of a Met fan. Bigots hellp ruin this country. Un;ess your heritage is either Eskimo or Native American I ask why you hate your ancestors who came to America and whatever company hired them.
Iz-
Try not to get worked up about Steve C. Based upon his comments this season I had thought he was just an ignorant fan (due to his lack of understanding/knowledge). Now I realize he has deeper issues, and you can’t argue with someone like that.
Did John oversleep today? No posts so far?
Thanks JR….
More and more, if there’s an issue to try and fix, it’s the back-end of the bullpen.
Even if it’s not a trade, even if it’s just eating Mota’s salary and calling up a Triple-A guy.
Milledge looks good in the outfield, Gotay and Easley put together fill a few holes on the team…
But Smith needs less responsibility for a while and one of the Schmotas gotta go somewhere else.
I was just coming on to post the same thing. This game illustrates that on a day when Wagner/Feliciano/Heilman do not pitch the bullpen can’t do it. They need another arm back there.
They also probably need to DL Smith to let him get himself together. He seems to have hit a wall and could use the rest.
Steve C Issues
Steve is a friend of mine and I can tell you he is not a racist. I won’t go into his friends and personal/family things. But he is not.
He does tend to say things that can be misinterpreted by others sometimes and that is the issue here.
I will leave it to him to explain himself.
But one of the issues that I am sure that is related is H1B visa issues and offshoring which has hit the USA workers over the past decade.
Almost all manufacturing jobs are being shipped to China. Many IT jobs ( computer/engineering ) go to 2nd/3rd world countries. At the same time corporate america lobbies congress to up the guest worker program for high and low scale labour because they cannot find American workers ( read they want to pay 10cents on the dollar ) for the jobs.
This of course creates uncertainty for those of us who may be affected by the above.
Thanks for listening.
Dave
I’m not going to debate those issues with you guys. This is a baseball blog and Steve has repeatedly posted criticisms of the team that have ranged from irrational to offensive. So he was called on it, plain and simple.
It’s nice of you to stick up for your buddy. And he may be a great guy. But in terms of his commentary on the NY Mets he has often missed the mark and offended the other readers.
Heard Jose Smith was just demoted to Triple-A.
Feel bad for the kid, but it’ll help him in the long run.
Does this mean some moves are coming to bolster our bullpen?
Oops!
Freudian slip.
Joe Smith, not Jose Smith.
Good, he needs to find the strikezone again….and not while pitching in important spots.
Gil,
Where did you see that? I looked and can’t find it. Smith gave up a run on one out.
I also see they played a day game and the Xman killed us.
Dave
They are reporting it on Metsblog.com
Demoting the rookie who’s struggling a little instead of tossing out one of the two veterans tossing ERAs sneaking up on six out there…
(sitcom catchphrase voice) “Thaaaaaaaaaat’s WILLIEBALL!”
Good gravy.
I don’t see how you can blame that on Willie. Those kind of roster moves are definitely Omar related. Even if Willie calls Omar and says “Schoenweis sucks get rid of him” Omar responds with “I can’t, I gave him 3 years. I’ll try to trade him but otherwise you’re stuck with him.”
Anyway Joe Smith needs some rest. Hopefully this will help him and we’ll see him in September, ready to go.
JR, I agree. I don’t know why some fans continue to get on Willie for what are essentially roster moves controlled by Omar. They did that with Franco, but since he’s gone it’s become clear that Willie wasn’t the biggest fan of Franco.
Willie didn’t sign either Mota or Schoeneweis and I hardly think he was even consulted before Omar gave those 2 contracts. It’s those damn contracts that are preventing Omar from jettisoning either of those flops right now. So blame it on the fella who handed those two the contracts.
As for Smith, hopefully he gets some much needed rest and comes back later in the year strong and ready to help the Mets win the division title. The move was a good one for now.
Dave – Thanx bud.
JR – I do not intend to offend. I watch almost all the ball games and watch how the players play. stats aside.
I base my opinions (MY opnions) on what I have seen. I compare to the 70’s and 80’s mets.Everyone has a favorite player, and everyone has a player they dont like. I have yet to get on Willie’s case or Omar’s case. They are doing their job. I was the first one applauding the trades made last year. We never had a good GM. Now we do. However, I have noticed a bit of unevenness in the league in going outside the US (Japan/Korea/DR etc etc)
What about our own Farm boys. They play well when given the chance. Yes Reyes was a god send. But so are LoDuca and Wright. Numbers are numbers. and lately baseball has added so many more avg stats it makes the head spin. So i go by the old tried and true stats , as well as what I see during the game.
Being a fan means that sometimes your like or dislike of a player is irrational. hence (FANatic).
But I dont live and breathe baseball. so no i am not up on all the stats or all the players on other teams. I only care how My Mets do and how the players are treated etc.
Because I dont like delgado, I am an idiot?
But everyone can chastise Green, whom if i might add, I was against and everyone said how great he was, then after the DL I saw a marked improvement and he won me over. Now everyone is against him. We are all different people and we see the players differently. I have never told someone their reasons were dumb, I only ever defended my own. The rest of you have always cast the first stone at me and called me an idiot for my beliefs. But hey I have a tough skin and if the bunch of you wanna be yankee fans thats fine. I am a Met Fan .
I have said my peace. Lets go about with what really counts.
Lets Go Mets Go.
To Benny (RE: Mick)
``It’s only Rock and Roll, but I like it.’‘
Life is just a cocktail party on the street…
What’s with Wright’s defense.
He is getting worse. I thinks omar’s better start looking for a 3rd baseman for 2008. Seattle’s Beltre will be a great choice.
Oh c’mon, CJ, don’t be a jerk just to be a jerk.
Wright is 24 for God’s sake, he still has years to become better as a defensive thirdbaseman.
I heard a “Professor Reyes” segment the other day on the game wherein Reyes attempts to ‘teach’ Spanish to various Mets and when they don’t repeat a particular phrase correctly, he jokingly berates them. It was pretty funny, but can you imagine the fallout if under the same circumstances they did a “Professor Wright” segment that attmepted to teach English to Hispanic Mets?
... oh, and put a fork in Delgado, he’s done, baby! If the Mets keep him, they’ll be watching the postseason from their living rooms instead of the dugout.
“If the Mets keep him”
Do you think there is an actual chance they won’t keep him? I mean seriously do you actually think that?
One can only hope.
Lets See Milledge has been doing great in center. Maybe if we take one of our second baseman and try that at first. A lil magic may happen.
Thats what managing is all about. Delgado needs a rest to keep playing him is ridiculous. he’s struggling either A because he is done or B. like some others have said he’s playing hurt.
Either way. we need to take a chance and test the waters before Post Season.
