In 1986, the Mets beat Cincinnati, 6-3, in 14 innings. Nondescript became noteworthy when Gary Carter played third base and Jesse Orosco and Roger McDowell played in right right field.
Do any of you remember that game?

John,
I do remember that game, whenever a left or righty came up, Davey would keep changing Roger and Jesse, it was fun watching them run in from the outfield everytime it happened. I don’t think this has happened since that game…..What a magical year that was…seems like yesterday….You just knew they were destined to win the Championship….I really don’t get that feeling from this years squad….(hope I am wrong).
Believe…...Billy
I was working a second job at a beach club that night. I remember the rally in the 9th to tie it after two outs and no one on. I would not say it was yesterday like Billy does but he is right..the Mets were destined to win. Didn’t think we would go 20 years with only one World Series loss since then, with that young talent the team had. I don’t feel it is destiny they will win this year but it could happen..see Minnesota in 1987 or St Louis in 2006. Get in the playoffs and get hot.
not often you see a relief pitcher bat in an extra inning game anymore, but both Orosco and McDowell batted in the same inning… twice!
I was 6 years old at the time, so I can’t say I remember. I do remember hearing about Davey’s trick that kept both Orosco and McDowell in the game, hadn’t heard that Carter played 3rd base though.
That was an unforgettable game. I believe that it was Knight who was thrown out for fighting which caused Carter to play 3rd. I also remember the “great” manager Pete Rose knew so little about rules that he wanted to protest the game when the Mets started returning pitchers to the mound.
Before closers threw one inning the game was much more interesting when good teams like the Mets had 2 closers and they would pitch long stretches knowing there was another closer for the next day. Not in this game but usually.
I also remember the announcers digging through the record books to see if either McDowell or Orosco could be given a win and a save and that found out not.
I remember the game. Watched it on WOR-9 which I had on my miami cable.
It was a great year and this was one of those unforgettable games.
Yes i remember it very well. I knew that rule existed because my dad had told me about it many years before the game.
I thought it was great!
And you forget one great thing about that year. Gary carter got his first stolen base because of a misread sign. the second baseman laughed and shook his hand. Gary got a standing ovation from just about everyone.
