COMMENTS: Anderson is playing, but in left. He’s batting second. I wonder who will hit there next.

Marlon Anderson is the thirteenth Met to bat #2 this year. I really don’t know why he is on the roster. Does he deserve to be here more than say, Chip Ambres? As soon as the Mets signed him we were told that he would be playing for the Mets soon. He had a dozen bad AAA at-bats, and here he is batting second. Did I miss something? What gives?
Not bad. Anderson played fairly well in his short stint with LA, and Lastings hasn’t been hitting much anyway, so why not give him a shot. Delgado’s slump has really screwed up the order – Castro is hitting 6th only because Willie doesn’t want two lefties together in the order, and a Delgado-Wright-Green-Castro batting order would make much more sense if only Carlos were stroking the ball like his old self. Sigh.
Hey John, what number will Marlon wear?
Let’s Go Mets,
I just got this from http://www.mbtn.net (Mets By The Numbers—a great site) Hope it helps:
”...It will be interesting to see which number Anderson turns up in: Though he appears to favor No. 8, he wore 18 in his first time around Flushing, seeing as hois first choice at the time was quietly put aside for Gary Carter, awaiting a call from Cooperstown and managing in the Mets’ minor-league system. Now that Carter’s out and 18 is unavailable (at least theoretically, for Moises Alou) Anderson could show up wearing No. 8.
And should that happen, we’re eagerly looking forward to the straight-flush infield: 3B Wright 5, 2B Gotay 6, SS Reyes 7, 1B Anderson 8…”
Part 2:
”...It’s not clear what number Anderson will appear in tonight. Despite the ruminations above, one commenter thinks 23 is likely because 8 is still in mothballs, and it may very well be. Anderson wore 21 with the Dodgers earlier this year (not available here). Twenty-three happens to be available due to the relase of Julio Franco. Yesterday, he since signed with the Braves where he’s doubt planning some revengve.
Does Willie just… pick names out of a hat?
Marlon Anderson is a fine bench upgrade but… holding down Milledge with MARLON ANDERSON? And batting him SECOND no less?
There’s just no logic in the house.
Bring in someone with some rudimentary sense of strategy and make Willie the Co-Manager-In-Charge-Of-Team-Chemistry.
Jeez.
San Diego totally destroyed Milledge so having someone else play left today is ok, but what has Marlon Anderson done to deserve the promotion. He barely played for LA, and one can say its because there was no room for him, but they sure found room for him last year with the same basic unit, and he stunk this week in New Orleans. I guess guys don’t have to deserve promotions anymore.
Just like Franco starting for the Braves today. A bigger joke than Marlon starting.
PS: Marlon racked PCL pitching at .212 rate. Meanwhile Anderson Hernandez has raised his average to .275. When is his one day call up?
OTOTOMOU
San Diego’s pitching makes a lot of veteran stars look lost out there, I’m not gonna hold that against Lastings.
My point is… even if you really believe Milledge needs a day off and you wanna get Anderson in there… I even kinda get that.
But batting him second, I… I can’t wrap my head around where a rational human being could even seriously consider it.
Sticking him in there and batting him eighth?
Okay. I don’t like sitting Milledge at all but I get it.
But second?
It’s just so… it’s just WEIRD.
It’s so completely illogical that I have no idea how you’d even come up with it as a JOKE.
Better strap a jet-pack on Carlos Beltran’s back so he can cover even more ground – he’s flanked by two lousy defenders.
Love Em Hate Em, you’re after my own heart regarding numbers. I, too, wonder what number Marlon will wear. My bet is on No. 28.
Last Met to wear 8 was the immortal Desi Relaford.
Marlon will be wearing #23 tonight.
There is an article on Marlon on mets.com. It kinda explains all the above including batting 2. It seems our manager likes the player and how he plays and approaches the game.
As for Milledge. I would think he plays almost every day, but he did not have a good week and maybe they want to give him a break to correct himself.
And I see Gotay had a good day also.
