ANALYSIS
If you’re going to go to the trouble of tying the game in the eighth inning on a three-run homer by David Wright, you might as well win. They didn’t. Joe Smith walked a hitter who scored the game-winner. Basically, this is how it has been all year. One high followed by a low.
NOTEBOOK
-After the game the Mets optioned infielder Dave Newhan to Triple-A New Orleans and purchased the contract of infielder Marlon Anderson, who will join the team today in LA and compete for the second base position with Jose Valentin and Ruben Gotay.
-Moises Alou will resume his rehab schedule today for St. Lucie.-John Maine has given up 13 homers in 19 starts. Last year he gave up 15 in 15 starts.
LOOKING AHEAD
Tom Glavine is seeking his 299th career victory tonight at Los Angeles. Glavine (8-6, 4.15 ERA in 20 starts this season) is 20-18 with a 3.69 ERA lifetime against the Dodgers.

“Compete for second base”?
There was a competition for second base… Gotay won and they still didn’t give him the prize.
Marlon’ll be a huge bench upgrade over Newhan, don’t get me wrong, he’s a nice piece for the team but… competing for second?
I mean, c’mon.
what the guy above me wrote.
keep up the good work John.
