This is how it has been all year. Take a step forward, take another back. Who really was surprised by last night? I thought John Maine would bounce back, but I’m not shocked because this has been the pattern.
Are you frustrated with this or have you accepted that this is the way it is going to be?

I am SO pissed right now!!!
Why the $#@% wasn’t Pedro Feliciano brought in to face Geoff Blum??!!
What the *&&$ is Willie randolph thinking about? Maybe it’s his brain that needs a splint, not the arm!
Joe Smith is out there, clearly struggling to find the *&@#$@ plate and he has a left-handed hitter up with a man in scoring position with two outs. Peterson goes out to the mound and takes a long time and I’m thinking he and Willie will do the intelligent thing and bring in Pedro.
But no.
Everyone in the &^%$*& ballpark knows if the Padres go ahead at that moment, Trevor Hoffman is coming in.
So, after a spirited comeback, when D-Wright gets his most clutch hit of the season, to tie a game that if we win could be a possible watershed turning point in the season, a non-move helps us to defeat.
And it’s so *&^%$% predictable…Trevor comes in and the Mets roll over, 1-2-3.
At least if Pedro is in and gives up the hit, we lose with our best pitcher in that situation.
And I’ll scream it again from the mountain top:
We sorely miss Duaner Sanchez!
I agree completely with what Gil said in his post. Smith was clearly in trouble in that spot. He should have been removed. I don’t understand it.
My question is how much more of Shawn Green are we going to have to see? A lot of people have been complaining about a lot of different guys: Valentine, Lo Duca, Beltran. But, to me, the weakest link on this team has to be the guy who’s starting in RF day in and day out. Isn’t there anybody better who we could put out there? I know Moises may very well be back soon, but what are the chances that he’s playing LF next season? Not very likely, I’d say. At the same time a starting OF of Milledge-Beltran-Gomez is also unlikely given Milledge and Gomez’ lack of experience. I think we have to deal for another corner outfielder.
A year ago this is a game the Mets win in extra innings. Losing a series to a team with Mike Cameron hitting third??? Bad job out of Randolph in the 8th. Luckily the Braves and Phillies have more holes than we do.
Maddux, the Padres, the Phils and Braves must be thanking Delgado and Green. First inning carelessness by these two desireless players cost Maine and the Mets 2 runs. Altho Maine gave up a pair of solo shots later in the game, those two first inning runs courtesy of the Delgado-Green Duo were the game enders. And Smith may have given up the go-ahead run in the 8th, but the real turning point was again that first inning. Here’s the story: Delgado reached to his left for a ground ball like he was tied to a tree and not to be outdone, Green dove for a very reachable ball like a 90 year old man settles into a hot tub. These plays put the Mets and Maine in a 2-0 hole.
Delgado just doesn’t seem to care at times—especially when it counts. And Green has two speeds out in LF, ‘slow’ and ‘stop’. Willie should bench these guys as fast as he benched Reyes the other day. Or else this cancer will grow. Most of this team and their manager seems bent on being satisfied with a mediocre season. And that’s a damn shame for those few Mets who play real hard ALL THE TIME. Willie: It’s simple…you tell them to play 100% or they sit. Willie, start managing!
The wake-up call will only come if they fall out of first place. As long as the Braves are willing to be swept at home by the hapless Reds, the Mets can continue to sleepwalk through the season.
Listen. The hitting was a big part of the problem. But the biggest issues were the bad fielding that effed up Maine early on. If it wasnt for delgado and Green flubbing the 2 plays. the score would have only been 2 to 4. mets win. Maine was robbed and those 2 owe him a steak and much alcohol!
Very frustrating game to watch. I even saw the home run in my minds eye. so when he actually hit it i wasnt phased, happy as hell but not phased. Then to watch it all just peter out. sigh
I could hear Keith now complaining about fundis and balls that should be made. and the one that got by delgado was definitely one. and Green didnt get a good jump on the one. shades of first half.
Its quite possible that they lost so many linchpins that the team feels ragtag now.
:-(
The good news is that @ the end of the year both starting corner OF can be gone. We can use the combined 18mil to get a real OF or rent a decent one for a year or two while the sprouts grow.
Dave: How about Eric Byrnes in RF next year?
Plays with reckless abandon, can hit, run and will likely be a free agent after this year.
We actually almost had him two years ago even-up for Mike Cameron.
Just looked him up. He’s ok. If he can play D fine.
The good thing about this team is we have a strong team so free agents should want to come here.
The bad thing, this is NY. Free agents may not want to come here.
Just read on another site that Byrnes wants a 5-year deal in the neighborhood of $45 mil and the D-Backs are balking. As you noted, Dave, with both Green and Alou off the books next year, seems like we could meet his price.
Not only would Byrnesy remind us all of Lenny D running the bases and playing the outfield, but he’s got the charisma and personality to make it here. He even said last year, when Shea fans rode him for complaining about an ump’s call, he loved it. He said he loves coming to NY to play. He’d be hugely popular with our fans.
I sometimes think that Delgado only cares about getting his paycheck and not worrying about producing or playing hard. If he can’t bend to get a hard hit ground ball, he should be on the bench. If he WON’T, he should be on another team.
I also saw that Smith was struggling and this is Randolph’s fault for overusing him in the beginning third of the season.
No one can tell me differently: Randolph’s poor decision making or no decision making is hurting this ball club.
I see Milledge being gone at the deadline for relief help and possibly a bat since Alou is coming back. Milledge isn’t helping himself to stay up with the team. Sure he’s a hit a few balls hard but he can’t hit a breaking ball to save himself and his D in the outfield isn’t a whole heck of a lot better than Green’s. I see the outfield if you can get Byrnes of Byrnes-Beltran-Gomez. Keep Byrnes for 3 years or so until you see if F-Mart can play.
Since they got rid of David “The human infield out” Newhan, and p/u Marlon to add to the crowded 2B pos, they shoulda instead called up Mike Carp to partner up with Carlos DelButterfingers. What’s the worst that could happen?
– Carp could come alive like a mofo and be a key spark. – Delgado could get motivated and play first base like he’s supposed to. – Other teammates will react thinking that they might be “next to share their positionâ€? and start pulling their weight in a f**king hurry. – All of the above.
I don’t see a downside to such a move. Carp seems like a mature enough kid that if he does get rocked and his stay is only a couple of weeks, he will shake it off and be back. But it would sure send a message to those who don’t go it 100%–it would show that this organization will go to any lengths to get as many players with heart and balls on their field. Omar, Willie are ya listening? Is anybody home?
For those of you who missed Mike Carp in spring training, he was a firecracker and was always “in there” making stuff happen. What a ballsy player.
Spring training is way different than middle of July big league ball. Delgado is not our problem lately. He has been hitting over the past month. We knew his defense was suspect when we got him. Still, 4 runs should not be too much for this team to overcome. Getting Alou back should help quite a bit. Right now we are stuck with Green because there is no alternative. That will change when Alou returns. This team needs another arm in the bullpen badly. Someone along the lines of a Brad Lidge or Chad Cordero.
