Lastings Milledge scored from first on a two-out single to center in the fifth inning on a pure hustle play to account for the difference tonight. Orlando Hernandez was so-so and Jose Reyes and Ruben Gotay led off the game with homers. The Mets had runners on second and third with no outs in the eighth, but couldn’t score. Obviously, firing Rick Down wasn’t a cure-all.
-The back-to-back homers by Reyes and Gotay were the first ever by the Mets to start a game.
-Reyes’ homer was the first to lead off a game for the Mets this year, and the ninth time he’s done it in his career. The nine homers sets a club mark, breaking the old one he shared with Tommie Agee and Lenny Dykstra.
-Jose Valentin bruised the pinkie finger of his right hand when he slammed it in anger against a wall during an argument at his offices in Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
– Gotay has a seven-game hitting streak (10-for-21 for .476) in that span.
-Billy Wagner moved into sole possession of eighth place on the career save list with 342. Randy Myers is next with 347.
