Unfortunately, Williams is doing his best Jason Vargas impression.
He’s not going to blow any smoke but he is going to blow the game.

Please ask Omar if it’s possible for him to call up somebody that doesn’t stink. Vargas, Pelfrey, Williams—all have been awful. A good team has pitchers at the ready in AAA to fill in. The Mets clearly do not.
Not that this has to do with Williams’s poor outing, but is it just me, or does the home plate ump seem to have a strike zone the size of the Grand Canyon for Oswalt?
It’s not as if a pitcher that good needs any extra help.

I disagree with you. Pelfrey doesn’t stink. Truthfully, he’s improved each time he’s gone out to pitch. I really think he’s another example of how all major league teams tend to bring up their pitchers when they still need more development. It’s tough to have to learn how to be a better pitcher against other major leaguers…that being said, Pelfrey shows that he does have the potential and if they don’t trade him, will be another young pitcher the Mets can depend on in the not-to-distant future.
You want to know why Minaya calls up guys who stink? Well why does he sign someone like Franco to a two year deal and in the second year of that deal, Franco is doing almost nothing to earn is spot—why not drop him?
Newhan? STINKS
Alomar Jr? Another OLD MAN past his prime.
Valentin? OLD and though he had a good year last year—-that was last year.
Yes, Pelfrey has potential, but especially after watching today’s game, is there any remaining doubt as to whether – if we’re lucky enough to have the opportunity – to trade him and Lastings Milledge or another prospect for Roy Oswalt?
Looks like Sele won’t be losing his long-relief role just yet. He pitched pretty well last night, and Williams isnt showing he deserves to take over that role. But i guess you never know. Oh and David Newhan just did his best Bobby Abreu around a wall impression.
Oh – and Jeff, you’re wrong about Newhan.

Gotta think Milledge will be back come thursday right? I know they’re saying he needs at-bats and all that, but now that Ledee is gone, and gomez is hurt you really can’t keep putting guys like Newhan and Easley in the OF can you?

I’m only watching the rest of this debacle to fantasize about the Mets trading for Oswalt…and to keep on keeping score, as I always do…have a great few days away baseball and chat with ya in the second half!
I turned it off too. I got sick of listening to the mind numbingly boring Astros feed on Extra Innings. Those guys are up there with the worst across the country. I’m back to the computer to listen to the WFAN broadcast on MLB.com.
At least I can stop kicking myself over the first inning. Dave Williams clearly was not ready, and scoring 2 runs in the first would not have been enough for him.
The break couldn’t come soon enough. I think I need a few days off from the frustration. I guess I will try to take some solace that they will start the second half of the season in first place, that they have much room for improvement if some of the guys return to form,Pedro is on his way back and that there is still time for Omar to work some magic.

You’re right—overall, Pelfrey doesn’t stink but he does at this point in time. He, as you said, has been rushed. Perhaps he will be good next year but he shouldn’t be starting anymore this season for a team that aspires to play in the post-season.
