In 1964, second baseman Ron Hunt became the first Met to start an All-Star Game. This one was at Shea Stadium and won by the National League on Johnny Callison’s homer.
It was the only time the All-Star Game was at Shea. Next year’s game will be at Yankee Stadium and 2009 will be in St. Louis. Commissioner Bud Selig has said he wants to return to rotation system. If that is true, the American League will host in 2010.
That leaves 2011 as the earliest the Mets could host. Since the game is now a reward to cities who built new stadiums, Arizona, Philadelphia and Washington could get the game before the Mets. Another consideration might be MLB’s reluctance to have the game in the same city so soon.
