ANALYSIS
To be an ace, a pitcher has to stare down trouble with the game in the balance. With two on and no outs in the sixth, John Maine blew away the Astros’ power in Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee, and got Mark Loretta on a pop-up to end the inning.
NOTEBOOK
-The Mets are 20-9 in the first game of a series, which is the best record in the majors.
-I’ve said this before, but Carlos Delgado is looking better. Last night he went 4-for-4. On this trip he’s hitting .419 (13-for-31).
-Ramon Castro always seems to do well when he starts. Tonight he was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
-In his last eight games Carlos Beltan has five homers and eight RBI.

Good. Hopefully Delgado has finally broken out of the doldrums. We need him to be right.
The lineup desperately needs him since Alou can’t stay healthy
Carlos is definitely playing better. Unfortunately Valentin has replaced him with a totally dead bat. If he’s having problems with the brace he needs to sit and let Gotay show if he has a future. I’d also like to see Castro play more too. He does get big hits, a lot for as little as he plays.
