Sandy Alomar’s stay with the Mets doesn’t figure to be long, but at least it won’t be as short as that of Jason Vargas. Alomar gives the Mets a right-handed bat off the bench, but he’s here to protect them when catcher Paul Lo Duca serves his suspension.
A team canÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t bring up a player for the minors to fill the void of a suspended player, but having Alomar on the 25-man roster two days before FridayÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s hearing gives them a back-up to Ramon Castro.
Don’t be surprised if Alomar is optioned out Sunday to make room for that day’s pitcher. Dave Williams and Phil Humber are among the possibilities.
