At one time “Aaron Sele”:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5062 was a good major league pitcher. He showed enough during spring training to make the team, but I don’t think he’s being used properly. He was supposed to take over the long-man/spot starter role Darren Oliver had last year.
If not tonight, when else would they pitch him? He certainly couldn’t have done any worse than Jason Vargas. If not as a starter, then he should be in instead of Joe Smith. If they aren’t going to use him, why is he here?

John—-I was just coming on to your blog to ask the question, “Why is Sele on the team?” I think using Smith with the Mets trailing by 4 is a waste. Last year, Oliver would have been in the game. If Sele is not worth using, then, indeed, why is he on the team.
Which brings me to my next point: Is Randolph really doing right by this team?
Smith has thrown so many innings that if the Mets do luck it into the playoffs, what will he have left to contribute.
The Mets are in first place because they are a good team but not much better than that and they play in a weak division.
This year is really turning into a disappointing one because I think Randolph is making poor decisions….there’s no fight in these guys. It’s amazing how the chemistry changes when you let a guy like Cliff Floyd go.
Minaya has not been much better with the people he chose to let go and who he’s brought in.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mets go 0 for the road trip…Houston is playing tougher than early on.
I was thinking that a DP ball there leaves it at 6-3, a deficit that can be overcome in this ballpark. I defend Willie for using Smith at the game’s most critical moment; it’s just too bad he didn’t come through.
You are totally right Benny. It’s pretty obvious what happened there. Willie wanted Joe Smith for one guy, to get the double play, and then he’d pinch hit for him the next inning and Sele could come in with nobody on base.
But Joe Smith spit the bit and there we have it.
Are our chemistry problems do to Cliff? I know the guys liked him. But could it be that?
Oh and by the way he is playing and Alou ain’t.
