Championship caliber teams go for the throat, and we saw some of that today. Jorge Sosa let the Phillies back in the game thanks to a couple of walks in the second, but the Mets came back. They might have lost the pitching edge tomorrow with Oliver Perez getting scratched, but they are riding the hot hand.
The Mets can push the Phillies seven back with a win tomorrow, and considering their now surfacing pitching questions, every little bit helps.
The killer instinct is something I want to see from this team.

While on the topic of poor umpiring, did anyone see the two calls made in the 8th inning of the marlins/braves game? Blown call at 3rd and a real iffy interference call at 2nd. And as much as I love seeing Blown-itez (as in Blown(save)-itez) get beat up as much as the next met fan, I’m not too happy about the umps helping the braves seal this game.
One thing I didn’t understand, from today’s game: With two out and a runner at third and the Mets up, 3-1, why did Sosa even bother pitching to Carlos Ruiz and instead go after J.A. Happ, who’d never had a Major League at-bat?
Ruiz singled to make it 3-2 and Happ looked…well, hapless, as he struck out. Pitching to Ruiz didn’t end up mattering, but it could have.
Agreed about pitching to Ruiz. Sure, you’d like the pitcher leading off the next inning, but with a runner on third, you’ve got to play to get out of that inning with no further damage. You either have to intentionally walk Ruiz, or, better, pitch around him in no uncertain terms.
The injury to Sosa is a very bad development. Pelfrey hasn’t done anything in AAA to show he’s ready. If Sosa’s going to miss time beyond the All-Star break, we’re going to be depending on some combo of Pelfrey, Dave Williams, or Brian Lawrence every 5th day for awhile.
Also, the fact that Perez is being scratched with a back issue is worrisome. I know that they’re saying it’s just to give him an extra day, but…
HOMERS: WHERE THE HEART IS
Whaddaya kiddin me? If that’s the Mets poundin’ at the front door, tell ‘em I’m sorry for not recognizing them, but if they want to come in and stay a while, tell ‘em they’re welcome to stay ‘till after the World Series if they like. The New New York Mets have greeted the Phillies with a vengeance and have taken the first 3 games of this 4-game set by cranking out some sustained offense heretofore not seen in quite some time. They’re on the ropes-=-take them Phils down NOW! Here’s to hopin’ that Pelf kills today for the sweep…and a couple of more Beltran dings wouldn’t hoit either. :)
Albert,
I agrere with umps calls being sucky not just with the Mets games but I’ve seen more bad calls elsewhere this year (MLB.TV) than I thought ever existed. Hey Commish…open your eyes, pal. it just might be high time for an ‘Instant Replay’ rule to be established. Frig all that Ruthian tradition, get with it and make games more fair. For example, the latest was that call at 2b where Reyes was safe stealing by a country mile but the 2B umpire called him out due to his obvious solidarity with the HP ump (who Reyes had displayed pleasure vis a vis the strike zone earlier in the game). At that point, Reyes at 2B could have been a critical potential run for the Mets but as it turned out they didn’t need it. (But what if they DID need it?) Are you gonna sit there and tell me that some of them umps ain’t in cahoots with one another??? If so, I gotta fly that BS flag real high on ya. maybe some of them umps can get together with the writers who insist on demeaning Lo Duca and have a clean circle jerk with one another as they are clearly the leading contenders of Baseball’s 2007 Hand-Jobs of the Year Award.
Here is a link for MLB considering the ‘Instant Replay’:

Please no replay. I don’t want 5 hour games. Maybe on the home run calls due to the stupid design of these new parks but nothing more.
No.
That Umpire was on Phillies payroll and had a huge bet on Phillies on the top of that. That’s what it was.
Like you said that call on Reyes was a momemtum changer.
Call FBI and CIA. I want him locked up and eat dog poo rest of his life.
