CF Carlos Beltran
3B David Wright
1B Carlos Delgado
RF Shawn Green
2B Damion Easley
LF Carlos Gomez

All looks good except 1st Base.
Man, I was hoping to see Gotay in the lineup tonight. Easley is a good ballplayer, but he can also play OF and mashes lefties. Gotay seems to always have good ABs and he can run and play the hell out of second base.
I am not sold on Gotay.
Ok Steve, I want to hear a little more. We already know you can’t stand Green and Delgado, and you are not sold on Gotay. Who do you suggest plays first base? And before you answer that, here’s a hint: try to come up with an option who is actually a first baseman! You know, someone who has actual experience there.
Let’s see what we’ve got (thank you baseball-reference.com)
Player Games played at 1st.
Delgado 1520
Franco 498
Green 126
Easley 21
Valentin 1
Gotay 0
I mean do we really want to be experimenting at first base? This isn’t the Art Howe years with Jason Phillips or Eric Valent or anyone breathing playing over there. Unfortunately Delgado is what we’ve got. Now if you are saying you think they should trade for a 1b and then bench/trade Delgado, well that is another thing. I don’t think they could get Teixera, but I understand why you would want him.
Let’s just be a little realistic here. I think the first thing to do is to drop Delgado down further in the lineup. Let him get himself together batting 7th and and then we can go from there.
JR,
You gotta point about the 1B thing. I know a certain announcer who talks every once in a while about how easy it is to play there a caveman can do it.
I saw flip Green and Carlos in the lineup. They are both lefties and Green is turning into Mr. Clutch. I know I would rather pitch to D Rite than Greenie right now.
Dave
I think that certain 1b says it’s easy so everyone will say to him “but Keith, you just made it look easy because you’re so great”.
We all know how easy it was when we saw them stick Piazza out there, right?
I am sick and tired of being a team with a bunch of bench players at every position. And that’s what you’d get if, like some people have called for, had Gotay at 1b, Chavez (assuming healthy) everyday in the outfield, etc.
Haven’t we moved past that?
I say move Green to the 5th spot and Delgado down to 7th. If Alou ever shows up again and Delgado still isn’t hitting even with the added protection in the lineup you can spot Green in more at 1b with Alou/Beltran/Gomez in the outfield.
I think most people can stand @ 1st and catch the ball.
that is what they expect. However positioning yourself situationally or having a positive effect on the flow of the game are two different things.
I have only seen two Mets who are good there. Keith and Olerud.
