At one time the Mets were 16 games over .500. Now they are six over. A lot has happened this month for the Mets, most of it bad. What hasn’t happened, at least not yet, is they haven’t lost their lead to the Braves or Phillies.
Personally, I think this is a big part of the problem. The Mets keep losing and losing, but they still have their lead. They are the guy at the bar who keeps pounding them down but somehow manages to get home without wrapping their car around a phone pole.
Tom Glavine says they are “lucky,” to still have their lead considering how they are playing. When asked how they are playing, more than a few Mets pay lip service to the fact they still are in first place. Willie Randolph has said it a few times himself.
You don’t want to think the Mets have to hit rock bottom before they turn it around, but it seems that’s where they are headed.
