Mets Chat: The “What Me Worry?” edition

June
21

At one time the Mets were 16 games over .500. Now they are six over. A lot has happened this month for the Mets, most of it bad. What hasn’t happened, at least not yet, is they haven’t lost their lead to the Braves or Phillies.

Personally, I think this is a big part of the problem. The Mets keep losing and losing, but they still have their lead. They are the guy at the bar who keeps pounding them down but somehow manages to get home without wrapping their car around a phone pole.

Tom Glavine says they are “lucky,’’ to still have their lead considering how they are playing. When asked how they are playing, more than a few Mets pay lip service to the fact they still are in first place. Willie Randolph has said it a few times himself.

You don’t want to think the Mets have to hit rock bottom before they turn it around, but it seems that’s where they are headed.

We won’t be in first place much longer – the series in Philly is coming soon.

Do you think they are complacent because they are in 1st? I dont…I think they know they are lucky to be in first, but that certainly doesnt seem to be enough for them. They look so frustrated out there and I sense that behind closed doors they are not taking the losses in stride. I agree that this team will not be in 1st much longer but I dont think that it is a bad thing that they are still in 1st right now. I just dont see them thinking they will run away with the division right now (maybe a few weeks ago, but they certainly don’t look like a playoff team to me).

    To SNK (RE: Complacency)

I get the feeling from them that they believe they can turn it on anytime they want.

That’s really interesting John, do you think this stems from having so many veterans on the team? As in, when you have so many players who have been through just about every kind of struggle, they know that there will be good stretches and bad stretches so they just let the season run its course? Contrast would be the Marlins with their rookies and how they always fight when they were losing because they know no other way.

You raise a good point about the veterans. But, when you look at it, Tom Glavine is really the only one with extensive playoff experience. I think the wake-up call will be if they fall out of first place. -JD

The Mets may try to project an air of confidence but a simple look at the way they are playing puts the lie to that BS. Think about it. What are signs of confidence? Not being afraid to get behind in the count (pitcher or batter). Throwing breaking balls behind in the count. Taking pitches waiting for one you like. The team is doing none of this. This insistence on the ‘everything is ok’ attitude is in direct conflict with everything we see on the field. The team is playing with no confidence at all. No confidence in themselves or each other. So they should just admit that they have lost some of their confidence and they need to get it back. This whole positve thinking thing is a gigantic load of hogwash.

I think that’s supposed to be ‘heir of confidence’.
