The boys are 3-12 in June. They have lost five straight series. The best thing they have going for them right now is Atlanta is also playing like hell. Like most of you, I picked the Mets to get into the playoffs, and that’s not a stance I’m backing off of. How can I pull off a first place team in June?
Why? I still think they are a good team, certainly as good as anybody in the NL East. I believe they’ll get out of this eventually, and I think it will start with this homestand.
But, what’s your confidence level in the Mets? Do you think they’ll pull out of this tailspin or do you see a total freefall?

I have full complete confidence in the Mets turning it around and doing good. And its not being an optimistic, happy-go-lucky, feel good fan.
I just believe the Mets have the best team in the NL East. The Braves or the Phillies aren’t good enough to take over and win it all in the longrun.
The Phillies are also lacking down on the farm to improve thier team by the trading deadline. The Braves and the Mets do. So although I’m not scared of the braves they’re the ones to keep a close eye on.
Anyway, the moral of the story is the Mets cang get out of the tailspin even as soon as the series against the Twins.
This is the typical Dog Days of Summer kind of slump, even though it is only June. I am very confident as well that this is just a little blip on the season’s radar and there’s enough talent to turn things around. They’ll still win the division by 5+ games.
Typical dog days, my ass! A tailspin? Please.
Enough with the Pollyanna-esque outlook.
Get real.
This time next week, we’ll be out of first place – which, by the way, we haven’t been playing like we deserve to be in. The Twins and A’s are damn good teams.
We have voids in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the lineup; can’t find consistency in the No. 2 hole; a horse ointment-using 40-year-old left-fielder who’s nagging quad has him MIA, a combustible middle relief corps led by a lefty who’s foolishly “manning up” by playing hurt; a disgraced performance enhancing cheat (our record is now 0-8 in games in which he has appeared); an aging, soft-tossing “ace” who’d doing a great Mickey Lolich circa 1976 impression; a 49-year-old lead pinch-hitter who really should be a coach; our Gold Glove centerfielder is playing on one leg and really should be on the DL; a rightfielder with limited range whose bat has turned to ice; and a manager entranced beneath the lenses of his rose-colored glasses.
I want so badly to be proven wrong, but deep in my heart, I’m realizing that this team wasn’t nearly as good as it played and not nearly as good as we all thought they’d be. This is shaping up a lot like 2002 – The Worst Team Money Could Buy II. Only this time, Carlos Delgado is Jeromy Burnitz, Carlos Beltran is Roberto Alomar, Aaron Heilman is Jeff D’Amico, Tom Glavine is Shawn Estes.
Still, I’ll watch every night…and be reaching for the Pepto Bismol by the second inning, as I was last night.
Hey we are Mets fans! Yankee fans give up on their team when they are losing (last month). We don’t! We have stuck with them for years. I know the Mets have the bats and arms to get back on course and win the division err series. Last I checked we ARE still in FIRST place. Tonight we play the Twins and get it going again.
PS: This morning I heard a rumor on a National Sports Show from one of their big writers that there are trade rumors involving the Mets getting Mark Buehrle from the Chisox. I didn’t hear the whole conversation, but I did hear Milledge’s name mentioned. Have you heard any of this.
Never say die. if you give up your faith in the mets you are no fan. I turned the game off yesterday after losing 5 and 0 not because i was disaapointed with the mets. But ESPN sux. jesus those guys were damned boring and ESPN are Yankee lovers. the firs 2 innings .. they favored the Yankees in their commentary. ooh look how good the yank handled that oooh look how the met did poorly. pulease…
I do have to say .. Gotay may hit well from time to time.. but Easley is a far better shortstop.. and having valentin as DH was a mistake. we needed his glove at short.. :-\
The worst of met teams have pulled off wildcard, so why should this team be any different? except for the fact they will make playoffs without needing wildcard status. :-)
John , dont let your years of Yankee coverage jade you on how to cover the Mets. We are used to tailspins.. dont push the red button… ;-]
Our faith runs deeper than any other fan… so basically just keep the questions on how we think certain players need a wake up call or need to slow down .. or need to think before they swing.. etc etc etc..
We are Not bandwagoners..
Lets Go mets Go…ya gotta believe in the miracle…
;-]
oh i cant let this go now..
ESPN talked about the rampage of wins the yankes have and ooh they were 14 out now they are in the running..
um they are 9 games out. ok maybe 8 now.. but how is that better than 14?
and they talked about the mets on this terrible losing streak and in dire straits… yet we are still in first…
Both facts were neglected to be mentioned verbally.. The spin on ESPN was attrocious and this iswhy i dont like Interleague. because it was the yankees… met fans without ESPN would not have been able to watch it.. as it was it was hard to watch.. god i hope they are never on ESPN again…
:-(
The only thing I know for certain is that next year, Deldgado is in his “walk” year, which means in 2008 he will be an absolute monster offensively. This will also then help Beltran, Wright and the rest of the offense.
I have Faith.
I also have a little Fear, heck, it’s part of being a Mets fan.
But the Faith overwhelms the fear. They will turn it around.
I just hope it is tonight.
Does Mark Buehrle bat third or fourth in the batting order? Can he drive in runners in scoring position?
Can he pitch effectively in middle relief besides start? Better yet, is he a Cylon?
That way, a copy of himself could take Glavine’s rotation spot.
Somehow, I don’t see Buehrle – who, by the way is a dominating 4-3 this year – as the answer to our problems.
There’s something in the water.. i think it was the haircuts..
and i cannot believe there was no retaliation for hitting loduca. he threw at his back. that was done on purpose cause he’s been hot.
How deep is your faith? Delcos, you’re not going Bee Gees us on, are you?
Gil you make no sense..
Mark Burhle would change the attitude of the team.. your aqcuiring an ACE to solidify the rotation.. then players start to think of Pedro’s return and a rotation that nobody knows will shape out 6 pitchers 5 spots..
Burhle
Pedro
Glavine
Maine
Perez
El Duque
Burhle can give 7 innings consistantly giving the bullpen a break.. we dont need a 3-4-5 hitter we don’t need middle relief it’s called a slump.. The yankees went through it in the beginning of the season and look how there playing now.. with delgado playing the abreu role that is he done? its a matter of time until everything clicks and the mets go on a role…
the 1 thing i dont like is Willie Randolph never liked him as a manager he manages “safe” doesn’t do anything to get the team motivated.. nothing.. not a hit and run not a squeeze bunt nothing.. the guy is like a vegtable who spits out random orders for the lineup.
GIL
WOW 4-3 do you know why? You really look at a pitchers record??? are you really that dumb? comon the guy has a 3.45 ERA he has a no hitter under his belt this year and his last 2 starts have been like 7 innings 1 run.. or was it 8 innings?
seriously if your looking at a guys record when he’s playing on a team 10 games under you are really dumb…
please i hope your not a met fan because you are an idiot
Lil john,
uh that was way too harsh. gil had an opinion. regardless why he had it. it doesnt make him an idiot.
right now the team is limping along and willie has to find where the real thorn is in the law and remove it so the team can be cohesive again.
law/paw. sigh
I have full confidence that they will turn it around. I expect them to take 2 of 3 from Minnesota and Delgado had a few hits in the alst two games and he was staying back on the ball, not letting go with 1 hand, good signs.
...’cause we’re living in a world of fools…breaking us down…
Buehrle is not the answer. The guy has a ton of innings on his arm.
The bats need to wake up. Beltran and Delgado.
And I agree, someone should have been plucked to retaliate for PLD. I disagree that he has been hot (he hasn’t really), but he got hit, a Yankee should have been as well.
Then again, El Duque can barely break a pane of glass with his fastball.
plunked, not plucked. But I think you all got the idea.
if keith hernandez was commentating; you bet he would have had harsh words for el duque not stickig up for his catcher.
besides he didnt have to hurt the yankee just send a signal. you hit one of mine i hit one of yours. end it, now.
by hot i meant hotter than delgado and the suffering outfield. ;-]
as it is he had to leave the game.
If Beltran and Delgado play like superstars the Mets will be ok. If they don’t they will struggle. Glavine is still decent. He’s not horrible. He’s not an ace. He’s been leaving pitches right out over the middle of the plate and up. His control needs to be near perfect and often it is.
Regarding Buehrle, W-L record is a very bad way to judge a pitcher. WHIP, K-rate, HR-rate, BB-rate and GB/FB ratio are light years better. W-L is the team. Remember Trachsel last year? We all know he did not pitch well. Steve C, why do you see pro-Yankee bias in ESPN’s coverage? I just see that Joe Morgan is an idiot and the Yankees are red-hot right now and the Mets are ice-cold right now and they reported that. It was part of the context of the game. Also Gotay and Valentin play second base not shortstop. Shortstop is not a generic term for a middle infielder. It refers to the infielder who plays directly to the left-field side of second base. That is Jose Reyes. John said in the post that he thinks the Mets are a good team and will begin to play well again soon.
Gil I think you’re being a bit too pessimistic. I agree with you that Mets fans in general were probably overrating the team but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t still a good team. The Cards won the WS last year and they were a thoroughly ordinary team. You just have to get in and the Mets are definitely a play-off contender. I even think they will win the division with 90 or 91 wins.
Didn’t El Duque throw one right under someone’s chin last night? A lefty batter on the Yankees. I don’t remember who it was.
To Benny (RE: Bee Gees)
Nope … if I were to pick a theme song for the Mets right now it would have to be the Stones … (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
Taylor – u r right 2nd base. sorry my brain frioze on me. i was agravated about ESPN idiots. Thanx for realigning the brain cells. I have no clue what my fingers were typing when i said short stop. maybe because i never liked Gotay, i tried. Easley won me over betweeen the 2, while valentin was DL-ed.
It was very uneven , the coverage was very biased..to me. and i wasnt even looking for a bias until it so blatantly presented itself. How can the yanks be vying for anything 9 games out? and the other teams are barely 3 games behjnd them.. it was such spin. and then making the mets look worse than they are. yeah they are suckin so are the other teams. the mets are still ahead by approx. 2-5 games..
as for undersomeone’s chin. the rule is a hit for a hit.
ask Keith he’ll tell ya.. ;-]
John,
wrong one. Jethro Tull’s -> Nothing is easy…
;-]
Buerhle is overrated and I don’t see who he would knock out of the rotation. Glavine could pitch like crap the rest of the year, but he’s not going anywhere, probably ditto for el duque, not that I expect that to happen. As for the team, while I don’t blame Rick Down for their recent offensive struggles, why not fire him. It seems like the group could use a shake-up. It worked in 2000.
we dont need Steve Phillips house cleaning rules again thank you very much.
we suffered through that era enough thanks. we finally have a real GM and this is your Answer?
sigh
I think the Mets will be fine – with such a diverse team, there are players here – and managers, coaches, GM,etc., who have been through every kind of ‘slump’at one time or another. Because this team also has a history of working together, things will begin to jell again.
If not, bring back the hair clippers.
In the words of the Tugger – You’ve Gotta Believe
You guys still think David Wright is better than Arod ?
