A sharp single to right by Carlos Delgado in the seventh. The smart ass in me suggests they stop the game and give him the ball.
Coming into the game
Delgado had a .288 obp and a .396 slg. He also had the 2nd most ABs on the team, behind only Reyes. When does the guy get rested or platooned? Shawn Green has a .358 obp and a .465 slg–shouldn´t he be higher in the lineup?
Andy Tracy, the 33yo first baseman at NO, has a .292 avg and a .535 slg. He bats lefty. He has 10 2b and 15 HRs. Chip Ambres, the 27yo righty OFer, has 16 2bs and 12 HRs. I realize it´s AAA, not the bigs. I know they´re not on the 40 man, but why not? Aren´t they at least as suitable as reserves as Ledee and Newhan? Would we really lose Newhan if he had to go thru waivers? Would we care? Do we need another IF/OF supersub(newhan) when we have easley and valentin who can do that too? Can we afford to use up a roster spot on Franco, who´s a great guy, but can´t hit anymore?
If I were GM I would release/demote Ledee, bring up Ambres and play him. I´d also DL Franco (find an excuse–arthritis maybe?? osteoporosis??) and bring up Tracy. I´d sit Delgado more, and when he plays I´d bat him 6th or 7th until he proved that his swing was back. First would be a mix of Delgado, Green, and Tracy.
Right now our offense sucks so badly that we can´t afford to give Delgado the ABs that he´s taking up, and we need more offense from the OF. We also can´t afford to waste roster spots on unproductive players. This problem isn´t going away soon, with Endy out at least a month probably more, Milledge probably 3 weeks away from contributing here, and no timetable for Alou.
I have had enough with Delgado and Beltran. In my opinion we should try and trade delgado (if anyone will take him) and then go after Texiera. Beltran will eventually improve, so we should keep him, but he should sit on the bench for a while. We should give the younger, generation a chance. They seem to have more fire, heart and talent in them. I think everyone can agree Reyes is our MVP, he causes rallies to start only to get them killed by Delgado and Beltran. Despite a slow start Wright has been great lately. Another extremely underrated young player is gotay, he can get it done with the bat and glove. Gomez seems to have figured out the pitchers better and there is always his bunts to use as a weapon. I think Delgado and Beltran should sit. We should let Gotay play second and move Valentin over to first, put Gomez in center, where he has proven himself, then bring up miledge to play left, leaving Green in right. When alou comes back he can take miledges spot. Then, if they continue to stuggle, you can bring back delgado and beltran who hopefully can get their act together and start off with a clean slate.
You guys are not being realistic with some of these ideas. Beltran is our star, our core guy. He’s not going to sit more than a day unless he is hurt. It’s just not going to happen.
Delgado was brought here to be the cleanup guy. With is salary he’s not going to sit in favor of bench guys and minor leaguers. I do agree he should be dropped in the batting order until he gets his act together though.
The Mets, although they have sucked mightily over the last few weeks, are still in first place in the NL East. This is not a rebuilding project, it is a team with championship aspirations. This is not the same team of a few years back with experiments at first base. And the Mets are not going to get Texiera. They might look for a bat for the outfield if Alou isn’t going to join us again, and I’m sure they want a reliever.
Lets be a little realistic here.
The smart ass in me suggests they stop the game and give him the ball.
Hahaha, funny all the Met fans in the stadium said the SAME exact thing. We said they should give him that ball the same way they give rookies thier first major league hit or homerun…
