The thing to keep in mind about Glavine is that he’s pitched well enough to win three of his last four starts. Sunday’s was the only stinker in the bunch.

This is a veteran team, and they’re not going to panic. Seen from another angle, it could come across as being a little blase about the losing, but I don’t get the sense that these guys don’t care, just that they’re confident that the cream will rise, as it were.

Carlos y Carlos definitely need to pick it up offensively, and while Glavine may have been squeezed a bit in Detroit, he’s been tiptoeing through minefields for over a month, and has been easily the weak link in the rotation other than Pelfrey’s stint. I know the guy’s closing in on 300, but based on how everyone’s pitching, if/when the postseason comes around, and assuming Pedro’s back, two starters are going to the Pen. This will definitely solidify the pen, but would you rather see Glavine get playoff starts than either El Duque or Sosa at this point?

Not so. I think Damion Easley has played well off the bench. Endy was also contributing before he got hurt. And, as much as Franco has taken some heat, he’s been directly resonsible for the Mets winning at least three games. That’s one a month. Nothing wrong with that. And, as far as picking up when guys went down, what about Jorge Sosa?

I’m not sure how Marty would draw that conclusion. I’m in there every day and they seem serious enough to me. The way I took Glavine’s comments was that he might be concerned that they could turn it on any time they want. I don’t look at that as not being serious about winning.

The team has been horrid with runners in scoring position since March. The biggest difference however from last year is the bench. Last year 3 subs stepped up big when guys went down, Valentin and Chavez and Heilmann in the pen. This year nobody has stepped up so far.

exactly. the strike zones were ridiculous these last 2 series. any smaller and it would be the ize of a toilet bowl.

So the team has hit a bit of adversity. Let us see what they are made of. It is June and we are in first. If you are gonna be good you need a wall to climb and prove who you are.

Is this that time or is it just a bad week?

Oh. and get off the Tom Glavine thing. He has been a finese pitcher for close to 300 wins. If the umps squeeze him he doesn’t have a 95mph heater to go back to.

Listen we were due to for this. It wouldnt be the Met’s if they didnt self destruct once or twice. They should use this as a wake up call.
My issue is , when they were winning no one barely acknowledged. But today. what do we hear? Mets Mauled by Tigers. Funny, how bout when we were mauling the other teams? oh yeah it was more important that the stankees were having issues….
Gomez finally got his homerun he was swinging for since the first day. Why Willie and the rest didnt ease him down from the ledge is beyond me. Now that he got it, we may start to see that wild swing of his again.
At least David Wright is getting steadier. All in due time…

The team just needs to start to pick it up a pace… ;-]

John,

Reading Marty Noble’s game story today, he seems to imply this team isn’t serious about winning – mentioning Glavine being “unsure” if his teammates were concerned with the recent freefall, and “peering” into the shower when he heard echoes of laughter.

Noble seems to be trying to paint a picture without saying anything explicitly… what’s your opinion? (I understand if this is something that would be inappropriate to answer).

It’s all about the Carloses, who are a black hole in the middle of the lineup… if Beltran and Delgado continue to fail to produce as they should, the Mets will continue their freefall. Simple as that.

I’m not panicking either, but another series loss or two on this road trip and I might dread heading back to Shea for the rest of the month where we only play .500 ball… If things continue like this we could be looking up at both the Braves and Phils before June is over… time to wake up, and batting with RISP has got to improve or we won’t get past the NLDS this year.
