Missing Ernie Harwell

June
8

Coming to you from the Ernie Harwell Media Center. One of the all time good guys is Ernie Harwell, the Hall of Fame announcer.

I remember the first time I met Harwell. It was in Cleveland a long time ago. I was covering the Indians and I went into the Tiger clubhouse to talk with Kirk Gibson. Anyway, Gibson blew me off, but immediately started talking to a TV guy.

Harwell didn’t know me, but saw what happened and came over and said not to worry about it and that there will always be guys who aren’t gracious. It was a nice bit of encouragement from one of the greats to a rookie reporter.

I’ll always remember him for that.
