Carlos Gomez is a perfect fit for this park, which is 420 to center and has spacious power alleys. He’s already tracked down two fly balls that would have dropped for extra bases against most any other team.
And, with all the room out there, if he develops a consistent line drive stroke he’d easily hit 20-plus triples a year.

He just goofed and completely missed the ball allowing Ordonez to go to second…
hopefully Sosa will get out of the inning unscathed…
but those other 2 plays….were amazing!
To Andrew V. (RE: Gomez)
It looked like he tried to do too much and tried to scoop and make a throw in the same motion. Gomez’s speed gave the Mets their third run.
The Detroit TV announcers were just oohing and aahing over Gomez in the field. What they didn’t get, however, was his tag-up from third: Like Leyland, they were positive that Gomez had left early. When watching the replay, which showed that Gomez had not left early, they just seemed stunned. My guess is they had no idea how fast he is.
which is odd Benny, because I can recall a few spring training games where Maybin was compared to Gomez as they were both playing… hmm.
Given all the issues the Mets have had the last few days this seemed to trivial to mention last night, but I couldnt figure out why Ledee was in spacious LF while Gomez was playing the more normal RF. LF in Comerica is like LF at Yankee Stadium, you need two CF’s out there. Seems like it worked out well though, for Friday anyway.
