They are still in first place. There is still a lot of season left. They still have the best team in the NL. All true.
However, things aren’t perfect in Camelot. Endy Chavez is down. Who knows when Moises Alou will be ready? Carlos Delgado still hasn’t busted loose. They’ve been winning on solid starting pitching, and that has to continue because they aren’t hitting. An 0-for-8 last night with runners in scoring position to encore going 3-for-13 the night before.
June always figured to be the Mets key month. Just look at the schedule. They have lost four of their first five in the month. They’ve got the Tigers, Dodgers and Yankees coming up on the road. Then Minnesota, Oakland and St. Louis, with five more against the Phillies at the end of the month.
This is their most important stretch of the season. They’d better start hitting, because that pitching can’t last forever. Can it?
