When I posted about the Yankees chant, I was asked if I thought there was balanced coverage between the two teams and my thoughts.
The coverage is not balanced. Never has been, and won’t ever be.
There’s no doubt newspapers in the area favor the Yankees, and it has been that way for years. It stems from readership polls showing more people favor the Yankees. In every two-team market, there’s always one over the other, and it is always the more established team favored: Yankees over Mets; Cubs over Sox; Dodgers over Angels; and Giants over A’s.
There has to be economic reasons (more advertisers favoring the Yankees over the Mets is what I can come up with). Fair? Probably not, but since when does fair ever enter into the equation?
As for me … I was born in New Rochelle, but grew up in Ohio. My favorite teams growing up were the Browns, Indians and Celtics (John Havlicek went to Ohio State).
The Yankees? Sorry. I started liking baseball at the end of Mickey Mantle’s career. I liked Mantle, but never cared for the Yankees. (Truth is, I liked the Red Sox more than the Yankees). So, comments I’m a closet Yankees fan are more laughable than anything.
