Missed the press elevator tonight so I walked the ramps down. Got to hear Mets’ fans at their vocal best, “Yankees s—-, Yankees s—-.’’ What is that?
The Yankees didn’t even play tonight. If the teams were in the same division the Mets would be in front by 11 1/2 games. Barring a collapse, the Mets are going to the playoffs. Barring a miracle, the Yankees are going home in October.
Why can’t Mets fans just enjoy the ride without bringing the Yankees into it? It reminds me of when the Patriots won the Super Bowl and Boston fans were chanting about the Yankees.
When you’re chanting that, you’re admitting the Yankees are in your heads. Hey, enjoy the ride that the other guys aren’t going to be on anytime soon.

Most of the time when you hear that chant it’s because some idiot fan was at the game all decked out in Yankee stuff. That’s a little more classless I think, and obviously these are just begging for it. And it would be just as classless if a Met fan wore all orange and blue to a Yankee-Red Sox game…
As I was walking down the same crowded ramp, listening to the Yankees suck rant, I said to my friend, Mets fans obviously have huge inferiority complexes. It’s true, the Yankees suck, but the Mets are on top, so why do you care? It’s no different than the Devils fans screaming “Rangers suck” when they play other teams- why bother?
Please don’t lump true Mets fans in with a bunch of front-running yahoos. Any actual Met fan would never participate in that chant.
The only mis-conception that people have is that Yankee fans don’t do it and don’t chant “Mets suck” or “Boston sucks”, etc, at Yankee Stadium.
They DO chant and scream all that throughout the game. So lets not pretend like there is some form of inferiority complex going on.
With that said, Yankee failure makes me happy.
A Mets win with a Yankee loss is as good as it gets.
Hannah – why do Rangers fans still yell Potvin Sucks when he retired in 1988? Let’s be fair..there are idiots on every side.
Anyway, I have yet to go to a game a Shea this season where I didn’t see Yankees fans in full Yankees gear.
The reason is look at the paper. look at lohud. who’s on the cover? the first place mets. no its always the stankees.
even when they dont play they are in the paper over the Mets. I am a REAL Mets fan. I dont care about any other team or player but the mets. I dont watch the yankees to see them lose. i dont watch anything. unless they play the mets.
I wish no ill on any team. until they play my team.

John – this is one of my least favorite things about going to Mets games. In fact, sometimes you can even hear it on TV and it really annoys me.
1) Bren – that may provoke it at times, but after every win by the Mets, you hear people starting the Yankees suck chant on the way down…when there are no yankee fans in sight.
2) Benny- I went recently to a Yankee/Bosox game and there were tons of Bosox fans – the Yankees yelled Boston Sucks in response to the much louder “Lets go BoSox.” Meanwhile, I saw lots of Mets fans and there certainly werent any Mets Suck chants – I have never heard Yankee fans yell that outside of the subway series. It actually IS an inferiority thing, because some Mets “fans” enjoy a Yankees loss even MORE than a Mets win. Apparently, so does the media, so I guess that makes it worse.
3) Hannah – agree 100%. Its one thing to yell about the Red Sox if you are a Yankee fan and they are rivals and in direct competition (most years!) but to yell about a team that is not in your division (and wouldnt even nbe in your rear view mirror if it were) is just silly.
It’s just Bush-League. No matter the provocation it is silly and makes the Mets’ fans look small. There were no Yankees Suck chants in ‘69, ‘73, or ‘86. Why? Cause no one gave a darn about what the Bronx boys were doing. Not the team, not the fans, no one. We owned the town in those years.
If we truly want to own the town this year it should be the same. Also, one thing that has not helped is this silly interleage play. It was OK to start with but now is old and worthless.

I think it’s the legitimate reaction of Mets fans who are hit by a ceaseless barrage of Yankee coverage. Television and the newspapers give far more coverage to the Yankees despite the superiority of the Mets this year. The Daily News even ran a horrific article about how the city is in the dumps because the Yankees are so bad and it never mentioned the first place team in New York!
Brett – yes, thats true. But by yelling about the Yanks at Shea when they arent playing, Mets fans are also treating the Yanks like they are more important. If Mets fans care more about the Yankees sucking than the Mets winning, the media is totally justified in doing so as well.
Besides, do you think the Mets players enjoy hearing that every day? I would think they’d prefer the “Let’s go Mets” chants, but maybe that’s just me.
I agree that it’s totally bush-league and it makes us look small as fans. I won’t do it, unless the Yankees are, you know, at Shea playing us.
News coverage? Yeah, the Mets continually get the short end of the back pages but that’s no excuse. I think the joke after Clemens made his obnoxious mid-game announcement was that Ollie Perez could’ve thrown the no-hitter that day and it still would’ve been relegated to 2d class news. It is what it is, it certainly ain’t an excuse to chant meaningless chants about that other team during a game against the Giants or Pirates or whoever.

Your are wrong!!!! The night of the clincher in ‘86 when we ran onto the field at old Shea, you could here the Yankees Suck chant all the way to Da Bronx!!!!! Guess you were not there…..I do agree with you about interleague play, not only is it worthless and causes the unbalanced schedule, but it is the main reason why all Major League teams do not play on Memorial day and Labor Day…Pathetic…..

Its ridiculous and embarrassing.
The “Yankees Suck” chat makes me very, very angry (cue The Incredible Hulk theme) even when directed at the silly guy all decked out with his A-Rod jersey and Yankees cap. And this is coming from a life, long New Yorker and Mets fan who has been to 28 baseball stadiums but never Yankee Stadium – how’s that for dedication.
However, at Thursday’s game when some silly guys in head-to-toe Yankees paraphernalia started dancing when the Giant’s scored, he’s wasn’t greeted by the Chat in question, but rather a chorus of “LAST PLACE YANK-EES” (go ahead say it aloud to the familiar tune of “Let’s go Yankees), it just cracked me up and left me with a warm feeling all over.
I think this whole “Yankees suck” chant has to do with the state of how the Yankees and Mets are viewed in the city. No matter what, the Yankees are still the poster child of baseball in NYC. Since NYC is the largest market in the nation, when people around the country think of NY and baseball, they think of the boys from the Bronx. Mets fans just want to even it up or better yet, surpass the Yanks are the #1 team in the city. I personally hate the “Yankees suck” chant unless the Mets are playing the Yanks. I have a friend who I know and is a Yankees fan. This whole issue is only proves the point that the Mets care more about the Yankees than vice versa. As a Mets fan, I only watch the Mets. I could care less what the Yankees are up to. Even when they loose, I really couldn’t care less.
Mets fans who chant anything about the yankees are the same losers who like to trash talk to thier yankee friends. They are the losers who have been owned for years and now are looking for payback. When someone tries to talk to me about he yankees I simply say “Who” then I tell them in not intersted. if your bothering chanting about the yankees then you are not enjoying the great season that the 1 good team in NY is having. Lets go Mets!!!!
The Mets must be doing well if this is what people are getting all bent out of shape about. Anyway, another reason why this occurs is simply because a lot of Yankee fans are the worst winners on the planet. For instance, I was out at bars in ‘96, ‘98, and ‘99 when the Yankees won, and as soon as the last out was made a bunch of fans who knew I was a Met fan took the opportunity to remind me that they suck as soon as the last out was made, before they even celebrated a measly world championship. So please people, enough with the high horse on this. What goes around comes around, and bullies always cry when you stand up to them…

Its so nice to see the press blast Met fans every night this week. We are hypocrits, we are bush. Does it hurt anyone? No, So if some people get their kicks in a harmless way what the heck is the difference? I guess the press wants the team in chaos like the Yankess who we can’t make fun of according to the press, but since this team is not in constant turmoil the press has to blast te fans who are, heaven forbid, enjoying themselves! Man we are bad fans….. I’m going to confession. I didn’t boo Mota, and I enjoy the Yankees in the cellar. Shame Shame Shame/
At the rate things are going the Yankees will only be getting a pity suck from Mets fans in two years.

For starter, you must in your heart favor the Highlanders ( Stankees) since you covered them for 8 years. Tell your boss you want that beat, so you donot have hear Yankees Suck. Let me ask you are you originally from NY. New Yorkers are vocal and are competitive. The Yankees do suck now. But with this said its still Amazing they they still grab the headlines and every sport reporter or sportcaster must love them. The Mets are like Rodney Dangerfield, they get no respect. The have the right to chant what they want when they want. SO if I was there and being a Met fan for well over 35yrs I too would chant:

For your information, I do not live in Westchester and found out about his article on a blog. The Media has no respect for the Mets and their fans. I have been a Met fan since 1972. I probably have forgotten more about the Met organization then you will ever know. So what is the big deal that the Met fans chant Yankees Suck. They are telling the truth, but was it Ok for Yankee fans to make fun of the Mets during their bad years and when they beat us in 2000. Steve let me chant it for you again!!!!

I don’t understand why no one understands the art of chanting “Yankees Suck”. Red Sox fans just don’t like the Yankees. Period. Then you might ask, why not? I can come up with about 34987534985634985645244444 reasons right now. My personal favorite reason is the famous 2004 ALCS play when Alex Rodriguez tried to bitch slap the ball out of Bronson Arroyo’s glove. Wow A-Rod, talk about class! Did you really think you would get away with it, you worthless, purple-lipped bastard?(he seriously does have purple lips, if you haven’t noticed). Another favorite- Pedro Martinez getting blamed for “pushing” Don Zimmer to the ground? Are you kidding me? The guy was asking for it! I remember it like it was yesterday- 700 lb, 500 year old Don Zimmer charging at Pedro like some madman on a rampage, with his hands out, as if making a motion to make physical contact.
