The Mets keep saying they are an international franchise and they keep proving it, too. They broke ground today on a $7.5 million, baseball academy in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.
The complex will have three regulation-size playing fields, including one with the dimensions and wall height of Citi Field, the club’s new stadium set to open in 2009. The complex will include a half field (for infield drills); bunting field; four batting tunnels; five covered pitching mounds and weight and training rooms.
There will be housing accommodations for 60 players.
Said Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon: “This new training complex reinforces our commitment to further expanding our operations on an international level and fortifies our investment in developing the best baseball players in the majors.
